LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A natural gas leak forced evacuations in Temecula near Pala Community Park yesterday afternoon just after 1:30p. It happened in the 31100 block of Strawberry Tree Lane adjacent to Temecula Creek. The leak was caused by construction workers hitting the gas main. An apartment complex to which the line was connected was evacuated. No word on how many people were temporarily displaced. There were no injuries. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-gas-leak-leads-apartment-building-evacuations
The Vista Planning Commission has approved a new plan for a five-story, 141-unit apartment project along South Santa Fe Avenue after the developer decided not to go ahead with a 96-unit plan approved by the city two years ago. Caserra Apartments will be built by Ambient Communities at the former Monte Vista Plaza site at 1070 South Santa Fe. A two-story commercial building there had been demolished last year. The new project will have a higher ratio of lower-income units with 11 for very low-income and 11 for moderate-income tenants. State density bonus law allowed the project to be about 50% bigger than allowed by zoning alone. https://thecoastnews.com/vista-planners-ok-141-apartments-on-santa-fe-after-smaller-plan-scrapped/

The event is coordinated by San Diego County fire chiefs in partnership with the Barona Fire Department and the Barona Band of Mission Indians. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/hundreds-firefighters-participate-training-exercise-ahead-fire-season-san-diego

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed solid gains. The Dow was up 1 1/3%. The S&P 500 rose 6 tenths of a percent. And the Nasdaq was up a third. Gold gained back some of this week’s losses, up $70.10 to $4,631.90 an ounce on the Comex. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures backed off of yesterday spike by $2.86, trading at $104.02 a barrel.
The Federal Reserve left interest rates alone yesterday in spite of increasing inflation while signaling it could still cut rates in the coming months. And Fed chairman Jerome Powell says he’ll take the unusual step of staying on the board as a governor once his term as chairman ends in just over two weeks to defend against the “unprecedented” legal attacks by the Trump administration over the independence of the nation’s central bank. President Trump’s choice to replace Powell, Kevin Warsh is still in the approval process, which is proceeding along party lines so far. Both are advocating for rate cuts in spite of inflation. If confirmed, Warsh will take the place of Stephen Miran, a previous Trump appointee. Miran was the only board member advocating for an immediate rate cut this month. With Powell staying on for up to another year and a half, there would be less change on the board and less chance of the President affecting the board’s independence. https://apnews.com/article/powell-warsh-trump-federal-reserve-inflation-4e09e4cdb25856635c94abe0021fc1d3
Inflation numbers jumped in March as gas prices soared. The Commerce Department today released figures showing inflation up 0.7% from February to March, the biggest increase in almost three years. Compared with one year ago, prices rose 3 ½%. Core inflation without the volatile food and energy components was 3.2%. It had been 3% in February. The Federal Reserve’s target for inflation is 2%. Today’s report also shows American income including wages, business income and government benefits increased 0.6% last month. That’s less than inflation for the second straight month. Consumer spending was up 0.9% in March, mainly due to higher prices. https://apnews.com/article/consumer-prices-gas-inflation-5c2037950e57d8e5d402a40b8fc41384
President Trump will sign an executive order today helping workers who don’t currently have them find retirement plans. It would help up to 50m American workers find privately managed retirement plans before next year’s so-called Saver’s Match, created by the Biden administration in 2022 and going into effect in January. Under that plan, federal government will match up to $1k in retirement contributions by workers who make less than $35k a year, and lesser matches for those earning up to $46k. It applies to contributions to 401(k) plans, IRAs and Roth IRAs. https://apnews.com/article/retirement-plan-matching-contribution-401k-trump-employers-e46469b15f1cb4af025bddb2e0363734
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
The saying, “rising water floats all boats” was never truer than in the world of professional sports ownership. The soaring value of major sports franchises, like the expected sale of the Padres for nearly $4b is pushing individual investors towards lesser sports, causing those team valuations to rise dramatically. Last week, a new National Women’s Soccer League expansion franchise in Columbus, Ohio went for $205m. That’s $40m more than billionaire Arthur Blank paid for the league’s Atlanta franchise six months ago … which itself was $55m more than $110m paid for the Denver team in January of 2025. Wealthy investors have always gravitated to the trophy asset of professional sport ownership. But their deep pockets do have a bottom. The introduction of private equity investment in the NFL two years ago has ramped up the competition for limited number of assets in all major sports, pricing them out of reach of even most billionaires. In the NFL, the introduction of private equity investment has caused the average team valuation to rise from $1b in 2010 to $7.65b today. The average NBA team is now worth $5.52b. Fifteen years ago, it was just $369m. Investors priced out of the big leagues are seeking the affordability and greater liquidity of women’s leagues and lesser sports like lacrosse, cricket and even pickleball, giving them greater legitimacy as a business venture. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/30/pricey-nfl-nba-ownership-stakes-investors-leagues-valuations.html
