President Biden today announced a permanent ban on offshore oil and gas drilling on both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico. The ban prevents oil companies from leasing 625m acres of coastal waters for new wells. The action invokes the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act which does not allow presidents explicit authority to undo the action and put those areas back into play. It would take an act of Congress to do that. Nevertheless, President-elect Trump said he would try to undo today’s ban. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/06/business/biden-offshore-drilling-ban-trump/index.html
