LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Between 50 and 60 people gathered in the rain on Sunday at the Oceanside Civic Center to protest the Trump administration’s military operation in Venezuela the previous day. Organizers included the Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside, Indivisible 49, and People for Peace & Justice. Because much of the international community views captured Venezuelan leader, Nicolas Maduro as a dictator, many expatriate Venezuelans are celebrating the U.S. military invasion. Others believe the decision was motivated to gain access to the country’s oil reserves and sets a dangerous exploitation precedent. In his first court appearance in New York yesterday Maduro pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges. Since Saturday, President Trump has again expressed interest in taking over resource-rich Greenland, threatened Columbia with military action, and made veiled threats against Mexico if it doesn’t address drug trafficking. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4427144788663-north-county-residents-rally-over-u-s-operation-in-venezuela
The parents of a man who died while in custody at Vista jail have filed a wrongful death suit against the county for not providing adequate medication and psychiatric care for 43-year old Corey Michael Dean, who was known to have mental health issues. https://www.newsbreak.com/newsradio-600-kogo-562159/4426247906126-parents-of-man-who-died-in-vista-jail-file-lawsuit
The Escondido Public Library’s temporary move into North County Mall while its main digs are being remodeled has been an unexpected boon. Though foot traffic is about what it was at the downtown stand-alone location, library card registrations are up almost 20% – about an extra 100 per month. The city’s 45-year old facility on S. Kalmia closed last spring and is expected to reopen this summer with repaired roofing and windows as well as new public spaces, including a food vending area, study pods and collaboration areas, reflective of the current trend for libraries to serve more of a community space function and not just be a book repository. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/01/04/escondido-library-thriving-at-temporary-mall-site-during-construction/
New laws that went into effect January 1 in California probably won’t change your life too much. They’re mostly adjustments to existing laws and mandates to state agencies to follow up on certain things. One requires more insurers to cover in-vitro fertilization. Another one requires more California State Universities to offer automatic admission to graduating high school seniors who meet their requirements. Some address regulating artificial intelligence. And tortillas sold in California now must contain folic acid to help prevent birth defects, which show up at a higher rate for Latina mothers. Research shows that folic acid can reduce birth defects by up to 70%. About half as many Latina women report taking folic acid the moth before they became pregnant as did white women. Some large manufacturers have been adding folic acid to their products for years. Mission Foods began fortifying its masa products in 2016. https://calmatters.org/health/2025/12/tortilla-law-folic-acid-california/
There is one new law that will affect just about everyone. Plastic bags are no longer allowed at grocery checkout counters statewide. They began disappearing several months ago. The new rule requires retailers to instead offer paper bags for a fee or encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags. It’s an environmental move. The legislation’s author whose district includes much of coastal North County says hundreds of billions of plastic bags are used and discarded worldwide each year. Many end up along roads, in the oceans and on beaches where they remain for generations. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4425525445160-shoppers-adjust-as-california-plastic-bag-ban-goes-into-effect

Warriors coach Steve Kerr was ejected from last night’s game for arguing a pair of foul calls that likely would have made the difference in Golden State’s 103-102 loss to the Clippers. Officiating chief Brian Forte later admitted the second one was a blown call. Golden State’s Steph Curry fouled out for the first time in four years. Clippers rookie Kobe Sanders had a career-high 20 points with seven defensive rebounds. And no, he’s not named after Kobe Bryant. His parents named him after their favorite getaway spot, the Kobe Japanese Steakhouse in Palm Springs. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6944559/2026/01/06/steve-kerr-ejected-warriors-clippers-game-arguing-officials/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up again today. The Dow gained 9 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up a little less than a half percent. Comex gold shot up another $50.50 to $4,502 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gave up yesterday’s gain, falling 69 cents to $57.65 a barrel.
Leaders of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the private agency founded in 1967 that oversaw federal funding for PBS and NPR as well as hundred of public television and radio stations across the country, voted yesterday to dissolve the organization. CPB president and CEO, Patricia Harrison said the move was preferable to operating as an empty shell without funding and “vulnerable to additional attacks.” CPB has been winding down since Congress acted last summer to take back federal funds allocated to public broadcasting. Republicans have long accused public broadcasting – especially its news coverage of having a liberal bias. It wasn’t until the second Trump administration and a GOP-controlled Congress that the criticism turned into action. Full disclosure: Rez Radio has never received direct federal funding from CPB, but it does carry some programming from sources that have now been cut off from CPB-administered funding. https://apnews.com/article/public-broadcasting-pbs-npr-b68f441c227ec7e076c038821b4a5931
Improving sales numbers reported yesterday by GM were followed by equally good news today from Ford. Its U.S. vehicle sales increased by 6% last year – its biggest annual sales gain since 2019. That makes it the third-largest U.S. vehicle manufacturer behind Toyota and domestic sales leader General Motors. Sales of the popular F-150 pickup gained 8.3% for the year, despite being off by 5.2% in the fourth quarter. All-electric Ford sales were off by 14.1% including a 52% plunge in Q4, during which time Ford pulled the plug on the all-electric F-150 Lightning. Hybrid sales took up some of the slack. They were up 22%. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/06/ford-f-2025-annual-sales.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Cases of the flu are spiking across the nation as children head back to school. According to a nationwide survey taken last month, only just over half have and one in three parents don’t plan to get their child a flu shot this winter. 41% admit to sending them to school or daycare with known symptoms of cold or flu. The main reasons given were: symptoms seemed mild, and no available childcare. 37% of parents say they only keep kids home if they have a fever. Almost one third aren’t confident which preventative care visits their child needs each year. One in ten say their child has missed all preventive care in the last three years. Survey results are from Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. https://www.luriechildrens.org/en/blog/preventative-care-statistics/
Christmas is almost a distant memory for many of us with trees either already recycled or at the curb for pickup this week. But more than a third of all Christmas tree fires happen in January. For that reason, the National Fire Protection Association is strongly recommending removing Christmas trees as soon as possible. Fresh trees dry out over time, making them more flammable the longer they remain on display in the home. A dried-out Christmas tree will burn much more quickly than a well-watered one. There aren’t very many structural home fires that begin with Christmas trees. But it is a notable fire problem, considering the short time they’re in use. Over the past four years, there have been seven civilian deaths and 13 severe injuries nationwide due to Christmas tree fires which caused $15m in direct property damage. www.NFPA.org
