LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

SDG&E has sent notification that Public Safety Power Shutoffs are possible for Pala and surrounding areas any time after 4p today through this Friday at 4p.  Click this link for updates and further information about PSPS.  Many Riverside County residents served by Southern California Edison including areas south and east of Temecula have received the same notification.  Here’s Edison’s PSPS page link

The winds caused the cancellation of planned visit by President Biden to commemorate the creation of Chuckwalla National Monument near Thermal in eastern Riverside County.  The monument is the fifth-largest in the continental US.  The event is being rescheduled for next week.  About half of California’s lands are federally owned and managed.  Those that are recognized National Monuments are protected from development.  President Biden has created six new monuments and expanded four others during his presidency – more than any other US President in a single term, aside from Jimmy Carter.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/07/president-joe-biden-to-create-national-monument-in-riverside-county/

The Pechanga and Agua Caliente tribes have joined with five other gaming tribes in a lawsuit against about 80 California cardrooms over a new law that took effect January 1.  At the center of it is SB 549, originally sponsored by the Viejas tribe, which gives all tribes in the state a three-month window to sue for the exclusive rights to table games given to them by California voters years ago.  Being sovereign governments, before SB 549, tribes had no legal standing to sue anyone infringing on that right.  The outcome of today’s lawsuit could have a major impact on some cities.  Nearly two thirds of the city budget for Hawaiian Gardens and about half for the City of Commerce come from local cardrooms.  Both cities are in southern Los Angeles County.  The Lake Elsinore Casino, in operation for about 60 years employs over 260 people and contributes $7m a year to that city’s budget. https://patch.com/california/temecula/pechanga-joins-tribal-lawsuit-against-california-cardrooms

There’ll be a major freeway ramp closure beginning this weekend in Temecula as the northbound I-15 French Valley Parkway project continues on the Temecula-Murrieta border.  This Sunday, the northbound on ramp from Winchester Road will be closed until Friday, February 14.  Crews will be finishing work on retaining walls and the widening of the ramp’s bridge over Santa Gertudis Creek.  Once that’s done, the loop ramp from eastbound Winchester to the northbound 15 will close for one month, reopening March 14.  Motorists are advised to avoid Winchester Road at the 15 for the next two months in favor of Rancho California or Murrieta Hot Springs Roads.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/07/15-freeway-ramp-closures-in-temecula-start-this-weekend/

The winds have begun.  We’re already seeing gusts over 20 miles an hour in Pala.  It’s likely to get worse tonight.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 4 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was off by 1.1%.  And the Nasdaq dropped 1.9%.  Comex gold gained $15.70 an ounce to $2,663.10.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 86 cents to $74.42 a barrel.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said today that it will end its fact-checking program for social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Threads, and adopt a community-driven system similar to that on X.   Fact-checking was introduced in 2016 in order to get control over misinformation.  It was alleged at the time that Facebook heavily spread false claims about the 2016 presidential election.  Meta will continue to moderate content regarding drugs, terrorism, child exploitation, frauds and scams, according to a Meta officer.  Its Community Notes program will be rolled out over the next two months and be fine-tuned through this year.  No longer will content be demoted after being fact-checked by users and found wanting.  Instead there will be a less-obtrusive label pointing readers to additional information.  Today’s announcement came one day after former UFC executive Dana White was tagged to join Meta’s board of directors.  Meta and other major tech companies have been trying to repair relations with the incoming Trump administration.  Meta had banned Trump from Facebook following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/meta-facebook-instagram-fact-checking-mark-zuckerberg/

The Washington Post has laid off about 100 staff members, mostly in its business division.  That’s about 4% of its staff.  A spokesperson said the cuts did not affect the newsroof.  The newspaper company has been in financial straits since owner Jeff Bezos blocked an endorsement of Kamala Harris in last November’s election.  Several star journalists quit in protest and several top candidates pulled their names from consideration for the Post’s executive editor job. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/07/media/washington-post-layoffs/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

It is now Girl Scout cookie season.  Two flavors are being retired this year – “S’Mores” and “Toast-Yay!”.  Two years ago, the cancellation of “Raspberry Rally” caused a frenzy on eBay with boxes of that cookie flavor going for up to $30 each.  The regular price of a box of Girl Scout cookies is going up a dollar this year to $7.  They were $6 the last two years and had been $5 from 2015 through 2022.  Cookie sales booths will begin to appear this week offering the popular Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs and others.  Cookies will also be available at the GSUSA website February 21 through April.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/07/food/discontinued-girl-scout-cookies/index.html

Yet another story of how self-driving vehicles still aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.  An LA tech entrepreneur recently posted video of the Waymo taxi he’d taken to Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix in which the car drove in circles in a parking lot for five minutes – a total of eight laps.  He didn’t have to rat out his driverless vehicle to Waymo.  They can be heard contacting him in the video saying the car “might be experiencing some routing issue.”  You think?  First, the rep told their passenger they couldn’t control the car and need him to use the app to resolve the issue.  Then the rep said they were trying to pull the vehicle over, at which point two screens in the car said it was “temporarily pausing” the ride and “finding a spot” to pull over.  There have been reports of robotaxies driving into poles, getting confused by puddles of water, and braking due to nearby birds.  Waymo, the driverless car division of Google parent company Alphabet has had multiple recalls and been part of a federal investigation over erratic driving behavior.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/07/business/waymo-circles-delay/index.html

Peter Yarrow, of the folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary has died at the age of 86.  He co-wrote the group’s most enduring song, “Puff, the Magic Dragon”.  Along with Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, the group had six Top 10 singles, two #1 albums and won five Grammys.  Yarrow had been battling bladder cancer for the past four years. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/07/peter-yarrow-of-folk-music-trio-peter-paul-and-mary-dies-at-86/
