The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

SDG&E has activated Public Safety Power Shutoffs affecting about 7k customers.  About half of them are in Valley Center, Pauma Valley, Rincon and Warner Springs.  Most of the rest are in Julian, Alpine and Campo.  Tens of thousands of other have been warned of impending PSPS outages including all of Pala anytime now through Friday.  https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

Southern California Edison currently has 107 outages with almost 70k affected customers.  There are active shutoffs in the DeLuz and La Cresta areas.  Parts of Menifee bordered roughly by Briggs Road, Scott Road, Domenigoni Parkway and Diamond Valley Lake are also off.  Parts of southern Temecula and areas east of the city are being warned of potential shutoffs. https://www.sce.com/outage-center/check-outage-status

San Diego and Riverside County have been spared any serious fires so far.  But LA County has three major fires burning totaling more than 23k acres.  Two people are dead and more than a thousand homes destroyed.  13k more are threatened. The most devastating are the Palisades and Eaton Fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena/Sierra Madre.  30k people are under mandatory evacuation orders.  Well over 10k more are under warnings.  Bulldozers had to be brought in to clear cars locked and abandoned by evacuees on Palisades Drive to make way for fire equipment.  Other smaller fires have started from blowing embers including one in Brentwood just before noon.  Part of the reason there’s been so much damage is that it’s been too windy for firefighting aircraft to fly.  https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents

There was a 3 ½ acre fire near Wynola Road in Julian around noon yesterday.  No structures were threatened and it was knocked down in about an hour.  Investigators say it was started by a spark from a mower.  Fire were also quickly put out west of I-15 and south of Miramar Road and along northbound I-15 near Adams Avenue in Kensington yesterday afternoon.  Each burned less than an acre. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/fire-crews-quickly-contain-small-brush-fires-in-kensington-miramar

22-year old Micah Chazz Harris of Temecula was charged yesterday for the murder of Aaron Bowers early Saturday at a home on Josheroo Court.  He’s the one who called authorities to report the shooting.  Harris is being held in French Valley jail pending $1m bail. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-suspect-answer-felony-charges-josheroo-court-shooting

A reminder that tomorrow is a Presidentially declared National Day of Mourning as we take time to honor President Jimmy Carter.  The Post Office, US Federal Courts and the stock market will be closed. There will be no mail delivery.  Though all federal employees will have the day off, because it is not a national holiday, banks are not required to close.   UPS and FedEx are expected to be doing business as usual.  US flags will continue to be flown at half mast for 30 days following President Carter’s death at the age of 100 on December 29.

Warnings currently in effect from the National Weather Service include a High Wind Warning through this evening and a Red Flag Warning for heightened fire danger through tomorrow evening.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mark Zuckerberg’s bombshell announcement that Meta will do away with fact-checking partnerships, calling them “too politically biased” is getting heated response from those fact-checkers including companies like Lead Stories and Check Your Fact.  They object to Zuckerberg’s assertion that their work was biased.  They’re saying that even if the system which downranked posts deemed false or missing context was flawed, it at least had professional input.  Lead Stories’ CEO said that, “Without fact checking on Meta, disinfo spreaders will be partying like it’s 2016.”  Meta’s new Community Notes system, modeled on X’s program, relies on unpaid users with differing viewpoints to agree on corrective notes for misleading content, regardless of the facts. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/08/media/fact-checkers-meta-zuckerberg-facebook-bias/index.html

President-elect Donald Trump said in a media conference yesterday that he will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “the Gulf of America”.  Since you never know how serious Trump is when he says something, we’ll have to see how this one pans out.   But watch out, New Mexico.  He also wants to buy Greenland and didn’t rule out using military force in Panama.  https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trump-promises-to-rename-gulf-of-mexico-in-bonkers-rant/

The former head of failed movie-ticket subscription service, MoviePass has pleaded guilty to security fraud and conspiracy charges.  Theodore Farnsworth now faces up to 25 years in prison.   MoviePass offered customers a $9.95 per month subscription that allowed them to see unlimited movies in theaters.  Farnsworth and former MoviePass CEO J. Mitchell Lowe are accused of knowing their business model was unsustainable, but used the pitch to inflate the company’s stock price.  Lowe pleaded guilty in September and will be sentenced in March.  He faces a maximum of five years in prison. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/08/business/moviepass-former-ceo-guilty-theodore-farnsworth/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

41% of employers expect to downsize their workforce by 2030 as a result of artificial intelligence, according to a World Economic Forum survey.  77% said they plan to reskill and upskill current workers over the next five years to better work with AI.  Unlike previous jobs reports, this one did not say that most sectors are expecting “a net positive” for jobs numbers.  Postal service clerks, executive secretaries and payroll clerks are among jobs employers expect to experience the sharpest declines.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/08/business/ai-job-losses-by-2030-intl/index.html
