A chain reaction incident involving up to four vehicles ended with one down an embankment along northbound I-15 near El Norte Parkway last evening. It began around 7:45p with a black BMW reported driving recklessly at high speeds. First responders found a black Nissan Versa on the right shoulder. A gray Honda Civic ended up in the center divider further up the freeway. And a Chevy Camaro went off the freeway, coming to rest near the off ramp. One person requested medical assistance. The details of the crash and the BMW’s involvement are still under investigation. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/01/08/news/multi-vehicle-collision-sends-car-down-embankment-on-i-15-in-escondido/80906.html

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up on all three major US indexes. The Dow gained almost a half percent. The S&P 500 rose two thirds of a percent. And the Nasdaq was up 8 tenths. Gold was up more than $41 on the Comex, trading at $4,501.90 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained another $1.53, trading at $59.30 a barrel.
President Trump summoned major oil players including Chevron and Exxon to the White House today, claiming Big Oil will invest $100b in Venezuela. Big Oil so far, isn’t convinced it’s worth it. Oil executives say there’s a lot of money to be made. But first there needs to be rule of law in Venezuela. The country’s energy infrastructure has seen rampant theft, and the country has a history of hostage-taking. The oil companies are going to want assurances from the White House. https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/09/business/oil-executives-trump-meeting-venezuela
Hiring slowed more than expected in December, capping off a year that saw the weakest job growth in decades. The US economy added an estimated 50k jobs last month, down from an already downwardly adjusted 56k in November, according to Labor Department statistics released today. But unemployment still ticked down a tenth from November’s revised 4.5%. The total gain of 584k jobs last year was the weakest non-recession year since 2003. Bright spots in today’s report included stronger-than-expected wage gains. At 3.8%, that’s a modest gain over inflation for the year. Tariffs and the uncertainty with which they were announced were one of three factors that chilled hiring last year. AI and the need to scale back some industries that over-hired during the pandemic were the others. https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/09/economy/us-jobs-report-final-december 2025
The Commerce Department reported yesterday that six months into President Trump’s tariffs, the US trade deficit has fallen to its lowest level since mid-2009, right after the great recession. While tariffs were expected to contribute to inflation, that hasn’t really happened, and they didn’t spark the trade war many economists predicted, mainly because the President backed off on many of his most severe tariff threats. According to a separate Bureau of Labor Statistics report, third quarter productivity was up almost 5%. That pushed down unit labor costs almost 2%, indicating that the labor market is not putting upward pressure on inflation. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/08/trade-deficit-in-october-hits-smallest-since-2009-after-trumps-tariff-moves.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
New this weekend at the movies, two new wide releases – the thriller sequel “Greenland 2: Migration” and “Primate” a horror tale set on a tropical vacation. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/january/2026?view=list
2025 was a bad year for theater stocks with the exception of IMAX. AMC, Cinemark and Marcus Theaters all cratered. But IMAX shares gained more than 44% last year, with its theaters generating record-setting annual revenue. Overall movie-going is still 25% below the record set in 2018, before the pandemic. The lesson here is that moviegoers will leave their couches for a premium large format experience unlike anything they can get at home. Such seats are also more profitable for theater owners. The average movie ticket price in 2025 was $13.29. The premium large format average ticket price was $17.65. PLF screens will become increasingly important to the industry as Hollywood shifts to more big-budget blockbuster productions, sending medium and low budget films straight to streaming. Major releases expected to boost IMAX further this year include Disney’s “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu”, Universal’s “The Odyssey”, Netflix’s “Narnia”, and Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Three”. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/09/imax-theater-stocks-2025.html
