LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

San Diego Gas & Electric has once again put Pala and most of inland San Diego County on notice for possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs through tomorrow with the next Santa Ana wind event expected to peak today and tonight.  Southern California Edison has done the same for much of Southwest Riverside County.  The areas affected are mostly the same as last week.  Some areas could have winds up to 90 miles an hour.

SDG&E did shut off power yesterday to about 900 East County customers in the mountain communities from Julian to Campo, including the Campo and La Posta reservations.  Those shutdowns were mainly prompted by a small brush fire yesterday in Ramona that briefly threatened a home.  That fire was quickly put down. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/14/sdge-shuts-off-power-to-nearly-900-customers-as-santa-ana-winds-pick-up/

Among new, smaller fires yesterday was one in the Santa Ana River basin near Jurupa Valley.  It burned about an acre, threatening homes for time before its progress was stopped.  Portions of the Bradford Street neighborhood were put on an evacuation warning. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/13/crews-attack-brush-fire-in-the-santa-ana-river-bottom-in-jurupa-valley/

The largest of the devastating LA fires – the Palisades and Eaton fires are being held in check as firefighters prepare for another bout of Santa Ana winds predicted for later today and tonight.

The Pechanga tribe is donating a half million dollars to fire relief.  According to a media release, “Pechanga will join with the Los Angeles Rams Foundation to contribute a total of $250,000 to three organizations working around the clock to help Los Angeles through this devastating time: American Red Cross Los Angeles Region, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Foundation, and the World Central Kitchen. Pechanga will donate an additional $250,000 to the American Red Cross.” https://patch.com/california/temecula/pechanga-tribe-pledges-500k-la-fire-victims-through-local-charity

Amid concerns all over Southern California about wildfire safety, the Riverside County Planning Department held a director’s hearing for the rezoning request from applicant Beresford Properties, LLC, yesterday to develop a portion of the hills west of Temecula.  The request is to change the zoning of 29 De Luz parcels from rural mountainous to commercial retail and “estate density residential” which would be a minimum lot size of two acres. The targeted area includes the Walker Basin surrounding the Cross Creek Golf Club on Glen Meadows Road. The area is north of Sandia Creek Drive, east of Carancho Road, south of Tenaja and Clinton Keith Roads, and west of Temecula. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/400-rural-acres-above-temecula-murrieta-eyed-development

Pala is under a wind advisory and Red Flag Warning from the National Weather Service through tomorrow evening.  Nights will get down near freezing later this week and there’s a small chance of some light rain this weekend.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NFL – Last night at Glendale, Arizona, the Rams routed the Vikings 27-9 to win the final NFC Wild Card game.  Minnesota’s Sam Darnold passed for 36 more yards than Mike Stafford, but only connected for one touchdown and threw one interception.  The Vikings had two total turnovers and four more total first downs.  Stafford had two TDs and no interceptions.  The game had to be relocated away from SoFi Stadium due to the LA fires. This weekend’s divisional games begin with Houston at Kansas City and Washington at Detroit on Saturday.

It’s unlikely that Mike McCarthy will return as head coach of the Cowboys next season.  His contract expired Wednesday, and in spite of an exclusive negotiating window that expires today, a source told ESPN there have been no negotiations.  Word is, Deon Sanders is a possible replacement candidate. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43398409/source-mike-mccarthy-not-expected-return-cowboys-coach

In college football – Next Monday’s College Football Championship game will be Ohio State at Notre Dame.  It’ll be the first CFP championship game in which neither team ranked higher than #7. https://www.espn.com/college-football/schedule/_/week/999/year/2024/seasontype/3

In the NBA – The Clippers beat the visiting Heat last night 109-98.  The Lakers lost to the visiting Spurs 126-102.  Jalen Green had the high score in the league yesterday with 42 points as Houston topped Memphis 120-118.  Other winners were Minnesota, Detroit and Toronto over Golden State.

In college hoops – Following former #1 Tennessee’s spectacular first loss of the season, the next four teams all moved up one place and Florida moved up three to #5 as Tennessee now becomes the #6 ranked team.  Marquette debuts on the list at #7. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings

In the NHL – Edmonton shut out the Kings 1-0.  Philly topped Florida 4-3.  And Calgary beat the Blackhawks in Chicago 5-2.

In Major League Baseball – Star Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki plans to sign with either the Los Angeles DodgersSan Diego Padres or Toronto Blue Jays at some point over the next week or so according to ESPN.  The New York YankeesNew York MetsChicago CubsSan Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers were told they are out of the running, leaving the two favorites from the beginning — Los Angeles and San Diego — along with a surprise entrant in Toronto.  23-year-old Sasaki, whose 100-mph-plus fastball and devastating split-fingered fastball made him among the best pitchers in Japan, was posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines in December, opening a 45-day window for him to sign. Because Sasaki is under 25, he must sign as an international amateur.  The new international signing period opens Wednesday, though Sasaki is not expected to sign until near the end of the posting window, January 23. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43401000/yankees-rangers-added-clubs-sasaki-join

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is this Saturday at Henderson.

Everything fades with age.  But some of the medals presented to athletes at last summer’s Paris Olympics are already losing their shine.  The French mint told The Associated Press today that it is replacing a number of medals from the 2024 Paris Games and Paralympics after athletes complained that they have already deteriorated — with some posting pictures on social media.  The Monnaie de Paris declined to say how many medals have been returned, but French website La Lettre put the number at over 100. Contacted by the AP, the French Olympic committee and the IOC also would not reveal figures.  In total, the French mint produced 5,084 medals for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. https://apnews.com/article/paris-olympics-damaged-medals-eff39f926cd8499d9dfa444d4feb9e53

Nearly seven years ago, Starbucks began allowing non-paying guests to come in, use the restroom, log into its internet wifi or just be there to meet someone or sit for while.  Yesterday, the chain closed that open-door policy.  New signs will begin going up at Starbucks locations in the U.S. outlining this new code of conduct, including the requirement that you buy something to use the facilities.  It also bans discrimination or harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling.  https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/01/14/starbucks-open-door-policy-changes/77689669007/
