Five years into the company created by Fiat-Chrysler and France-based automaker Groupe PSA, things aren’t going well. Stock in Stellantis has declined 43% over that time. Top executives are initiating plans for a turnaround, mainly centered on Jeep and Ram truck brands. And they have not ruled out shrinking the company’s vast portfolio of brands, including Fiat and Alpha Romeo. About 200 company executives will meet next month to hear the full strategic plan. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/19/stellantis-stock-stla-five-year-anniversary.html
There is a new “investment” market operating parallel to traditional stocks. It’s the prediction market on venues like Kalshi and Polymarket where investment literally are bets. They include the outcomes of political races, who will be Time Magazine’s person of the year, most-searched person on Google … even whether President Trump would say “drill baby drill” in an upcoming press conference. True believers in this real-time outcome of world events are seen by those who participate as being part of yet another financial craze like meme stocks that is a way to “stick it to the man.” Those who are able to successfully predict the outcomes of bets are making up to six figures per month in the win-some, lose-some world of prediction markets. But even the mainstream is beginning to embrace it. CNN and CNBC have struck deals to include Kalshi into their news coverage. The Wall Street Journal’s owner, Dow Jones, and the Golden Globes have partnered with Polymarket. A Wall Street watchdog says they’re really no different from FanDuel, DraftKings, your corner bookie, or a Las Vegas casino. Except that in prediction markets, you’re not playing against the house. In Kalshi, anyone can propose a so-called “strike”. That means the thing that’s being bet on. Kalshi staff then pick the terms for both sides of the bet. Kalshi’s institutional partners front the cash to prime the strike. Because traders are then competing with other traders on topics non-affiliated individuals first proposed, Kalshi argues that there is no “house” to play against. That’s an important distinction, because in traditional gambling, the house always wins. While the Biden administration sought to rein in predictions markets, Trump’s regulators are encouraging it by removing barriers. Kalshi now has $2b traded each week – ten times what it had in the Biden years. Polymarket was forced to shut down in the US in 2022 for being an unlicensed betting site. The Trump administration has since given its blessing for a re-launch with Donald Trump Jr. on the company’s board of directors. He’s also a “strategic advisor” to Kalshi. The President’s social media site, Truth Social is planning to launch its own prediction market called Truth Predict. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/17/nx-s1-5672615/kalshi-polymarket-prediction-market-boom-traders-slang-glossary

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” maintained its crown as the #1 film for the fifth week, barely ahead of new release, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”. Avatar earned another $13.3m. Bone Temple debuted with $13m. The re-release of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” placed 7th with $3.5m on half as many screens as the top six films. Third through fifth place went to “Zootopia 2”, “The Housemaid”, and “Marty Supreme”. The weekend total was down 21% from last weekend and about half the attendance of New Year’s Day weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W03/
Disney dominated in movie theaters last year – about 27 ½% of all ticket sales were for Disney movies with the most popular ones being sequels including “Avatar”, “Zootopia” and “Lilo and Stitch”. Disney’s closest rivals were Warner Bros. Discovery with 21% of the domestic market, and Universal with just under 20%. Nine of this year’s ten biggest movies were from existing intellectual properties. That’s showbiz-speak for sequels. Expect more in the coming year including another Star Wars Mandalorian feature, “Toy Story 5”, and additional Moana and Avengers films from Disney. Disney and Sony will jointly release another Spider-Man film. Sequels coming from other studios include “Supergirl”, “Dune: Part Three”, “Minions 3”, and new Super Mario, Hunger Games and Jumanji features. Overall box office business in the US and Canada rose 4% last year to $9.05b in ticket sales. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/17/disney-dominated-2025-box-office.html
Academy Award voting ended Friday. This year’s nominees will be announced Thursday. https://variety.com/2026/film/awards/anonymous-oscars-nomination-ballots-2026-surprises-1236633595/

- 1967, The Beatles began recording “A Day In The Life” at EMI studios on Abbey Road in London. They did four takes of the song this day.

- In 1993, Fleetwood Mac reformed to play at President Clinton’s inauguration. Their song “Don’t Stop” had been his campaign theme song.
- In 1998, singer songwriter Carl Perkins died of throat cancer at age 65. He wrote “Blue Suede Shoes”. His songs were recorded by Elvis, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash and others. Paul McCartney has said, “If there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles.”.
