LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

UPDATED AT 2P – A fire began at about 1a this morning near the same site where another fire swept through Rancho Monserate a couple of years ago.  It was stopped at about 80 acres with 30% containment as of 10:30a.  Two structures were damaged.  Neither were homes.  Evacuation orders remain in effect as of noon for most of eastern Bonsall, affecting about 2,900 residents with warnings in effect for the rest of the area south of Highway 76 and west of I-15 as far west and south as Camino del Rey. Schools in the Bonsall district were closed today because of the fire.  Two other small fires began before dawn in North County this morning, but were quickly put out.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/brush-fires-erupt-in-north-san-diego-county-012125 https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/1/21/lilac-fire https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/21/evacuations-ordered-in-bonsall-area-as-brush-fire-grows-to-80-acres/

A fire in Mission Valley this afternoon forced evacuations in Linda Vista.  The fire was reported just after 1p near Friars Road.  The evacuation orders were lifted just after 2p.  Friars Road west of the 163 freeway and parts of Linda Vista Road remain closed for hot spot mop up.  Another fire near Ted Williams Parkway and Pomerado road between Poway and Peñasquitos burned about two acres before being put down yesterday afternoon.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/brush-fire-ignites-in-poway-near-ted-williams-parkway-homes-evacuated

About 300 SDG&E customers in and around Pala are without power due to a Public Safety Power Shutoff with a possibility of it lasting until 5p Friday.  Similar shutoffs are in effect in parts of Pauma Valley, Valley Center, Escondido and Warner Springs with the total number of residents without power at about 14k.  Here’s the link for SDG&E outages.  PSPS’s are also currently in effect in Southern Temecula, parts of DeLuz, La Cresta, Wildomar and Menifee.  Go to Edison’s link for updated information.

President Trump’s first day in office was a busy one.  The promised flurry of executive action included issuing pardons for about 1,500 people involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, pulling the U.S. out of the World Health Organization and the Paris climate agreement, reversing several immigration orders initiated during Joe Biden’s presidency, declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, and temporarily suspending the U.S. Refugee Admission Program.  Trump signed several economic orders.  He has yet to finalize plans for tariffs aimed at China but said he expects tariffs of 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada to begin February 1.  On the environmental front, Trump declared a national energy emergency, opened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling, and temporarily halted leasing and permitting for wind energy projects. www.apnews.com

18 states have already filed a lawsuit to block the President’s order to deny birthright citizenship to babies born to undocumented immigrants to the U.S. www.nytimes.com

SPORTS

In college football – Ohio State held off Notre Dame to win their seventh college football title and first in the last ten years last night.  Final score, 34-23.  Beginning next season, behind the scenes payment to players by rich donors ends and a new system in which schools can share at least $20.5m with athletes under a sort of salary cap begins.  Student athletes can still sign endorsement deals with third parties that don’t count against the cap.  One unintended consequence could be fewer spots for walk-ons and players on partial scholarships. www.morningbrew.com

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is February 1 hosting Saskatchewan.

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – no scheduled games today

Great Oak – no scheduled games today

Fallbrook – soccer against Escondido, boys’ away at 4p, girls’ hosting at 5p; girls’ water polo hosting Valley Center at 4p; boys’ JV and girls’ varsity basketball hosting Valley Center beginning at 5:30p; girls’ JV basketball at Westview at 5:30p

Valley Center – girls’ soccer hosting Rancho Bernardo at 4p; boys’ soccer at Mt. Carmel at 5p; varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball hosting Fallbrook beginning at 5:30p; girls’ JV basketball at Mt. Carmel at 7p

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained a full percent.  The S&P 500 was up more than eight tenths of a percent.  The Nasdaq was up 7 tenths.  Gold traded $12.40 higher on the Comex at $2,761.10 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $1.79 to $76.09 a barrel.

Investment analysts attribute today’s stock gains to the delay in the implementation of President Trump’s promised 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods. www.cnn.com/business

One of President Trump’s earliest efforts is already having problems.  His executive order establishing a Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE to identify areas of government waste has been hit with three lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.  Vivek Ramaswamy, who the President selected to co-lead the DOGE along with Elon Musk has already stepped down, presumably to run for governor of Ohio. www.morningbrew.com
