The driverless vehicle vaulted over the brick sound wall separating the freeway from homes. It came to rest on the sidewalk in front of a home at 23741 Cadenza Drive. No residents were injured, though the vehicle came dangerously close to homes. The accident occurred just before 1p on southbound I-15, just north of California Oaks Road. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/01/15/news/driver-ejected-on-i-15-empty-vehicle-launches-over-wall-onto-residential-sidewalk/80988.html
San Diego County health officials detected hantavirus in a Western harvest mouse found near Los Peñasquitos Ranch House during a routine inspection. They’re advising people to take precautions in sheds, garages or attics in case there have been infected rodents living in those areas. Use wet cleanup methods. Don’t blow or vacuum rodent droppings. This is the first rodent to test positive for hantavirus in San Diego County in 2026. https://www.countynewscenter.com/first-hantavirus-detection-of-2026/

In the NFL – A record-tying 10th head coach has been fired this season. Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula mad the decision to fire Sean McDermott after Saturday’s overtime loss to Denver. In speaking with the media for the first time in almost six years, Pegula said he felt the team had hit the proverbial playoff wall and that it had nothing to do with the controversial call that ended the game. Everybody in the Bills organization thinks the call should have gone their way. The same day McDermott was fired, general manager Brandon Beane was elevated to president of football operations. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47682867/bills-owner-made-call-fire-coach-locker-room-loss
The Chargers are expected to hire former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator. He’d also been under consideration for the same position at Tampa Bay and Philadelphia. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47677046/sources-chargers-expected-hire-mike-mcdaniel-oc

President Trump is meeting with world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland today. His arrival comes following repeated talk about taking control of Greenland and threats of tariffs on Greenland’s protector, Denmark and seven other allied countries unless they negotiate a transfer of the arctic island to the United States. Trump says the tariffs will begin at 10% next month and increase to 25% in June. Though the concept is still causing alarm around the world and in the stock market, Trump moderated his stance yesterday by saying he would not use force to acquire Greenland, but “would remember” those who oppose him. Meanwhile, the European Union has frozen attempts at a trade deal with the U.S. over the Greenland issue. www.apnews.com
Bank stocks rose as President Trump urged Congress to pass a law limiting credit card interest rates to 10% for one year to help Americans save up for a home. Citing current rates of 28% to 32%, he commented “Whatever happened to usury?” Bank officials believe legislation has little chance of gaining Congressional support and that such a law would have unintended consequences. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told an audience in Davos that the U.S. should test a rate cap in just two states, Vermont and Massachusetts, the home states of Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, both of whom are in favor of limiting credit card rates. Dimon says it would teach “a real lesson” to those who think the answer is price controls, and that it would be an economic disaster. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/trump-congress-10percent-credit-card-interest-rate-cap.html
A successful new strategy has Johnson & Johnson poised to hit $100b in revenue next year. The healthcare company reported 9% higher revenue in the fourth quarter thanks to a pair of important cancer drugs. J&J has publicly declared it intends to be the world’s top cancer drug maker by 2030 with $50b in oncology sales. That’s almost twice as much as last year. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20260121159/jj-wants-to-be-the-leader-in-the-cancer-fight-its-strategy-is-starting-to-pay-off-as-oncology-sales-top-25-billion-in-2025
Pending home sales were way down in December, dampening the outlook for the coming year. According to the National Association of Realtors, home sales fell 9.3% month over month, and listings were down 9% from November. Those homes also stayed on the market longer – an average of 39 days. That’s 10% longer than a year ago. The South was the only region to have an increase in sales. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/pending-home-sales-december-drop-sharply.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
According to a survey by corporate advisor Howdy.com, recent college graduates are struggling to get jobs. AI is supposed to be a boon for those getting computer science degrees. But most recent grads report looking for that first golden coding gig for more than a year. That, combined with the rising cost of higher education and accompanying student debt is leading many to wonder if college is still worth it. Google says searches for exactly that phrase are up 90% since 2020. The survey of 850 coders found only 36% with a computer science degree. Many others had degrees in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). 27% of those CS majors don’t think their degree adequately prepared them for the modern workforce. 87% still think it was worth it. The average student loan balance for a CS degree holder is $4k less than for those holding other degrees. So, it does have some economic value. About equal numbers of coders surveyed think a CS degree is more valuable as think it is less valuable for current college students. About 30% think its value is the same as when they were in school. But those perceptions are very different among different age groups. Half of Baby Boomers think a CS degree is more valuable now. 65% of Gen Xers think it’s less valuable. 45% of Gen Zers and 43% of Millennials think it’s less valuable. That shows a generational trend of less perceived value for degrees in CS. Coding bootcamp is becoming a popular alternate path as are shorter, intensive non-collegiate courses. But the most popular alternative to a college science degree is a student teaching themselves coding. Which could be why more than one third of non-CS degree holders say their college degree wasn’t worth it. https://www.howdy.com/blog/tech-education-trends
