Private credit, also known as direct lending is a term for lending done by nonbanking institutions.  It surged after the 2008 financial crisis, and is expected to grow another 50% to $4.9 trillion by 2029.  Following the collapse of several American companies backed by private credit last fall, financial experts say a meltdown is imminent.  In the words of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, “When you see one cockroach, there are probably more.”  There is little transparency in private credit.  But companies most linked to that asset class are seeing declines in their stock.  They include Blue Owl Capital, Blackstone, and KRR.   https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/23/wall-street-private-credit-risk-rising.html

During the 2008 recession, General Motors cleaned house, eliminating the Oldsmobile and Pontiac brands.  It saved Buick because the marque was doing extremely well in China – so much so that it built a plant there.  Fast forward almost two decades and Buick now only manufactures SUVs.  But because of President Trump’s tariffs, it finds itself needing to move production of its Envision SUV back to the US to remain competitive here.  Envisions for the domestic market will be built in the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City beginning in 2028.  They will also continue to be built elsewhere for sales worldwide.  About 40k Envisions are sold annually in the US.  That’s about one fourth of Buick’s total output for the model. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/22/gm-buick-compact-suv-china-fairfax.html

Tesla today discontinued its basic driver-assistance program, Autopilot for vehicles in the US and Canada in a move to push customers toward its more advanced version branded as Full Self-Driving.  Last week, Tesla said it would stop offering Full Self-Driving as a one-time $8k purchase beginning on Valentine’s Day, after which it will only be available as a $99 a month subscription.  https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-drops-autopilot-feature-us-canada-2026-01-23/

Toyota is recalling 162k 2024 and 2025 Tundras over a faulty multimedia display.  It can become stuck on camera view or display only a black screen under certain circumstances.  Customers will be notified of the issue by the end of March. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/toyota-recall-around-162000-us-vehicles-2026-01-23/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, “Mercy” is a science fiction detective drama starring Chris Pratt.  “H is For Hawk” is a drama starring Claire Foy.  And “Return to Silent Hill” is a video game-based horror thriller.  The sports biography, “The Smashing Machine” starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt opens on HBO Max today.  https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/january/2026?view=list

Should you trust social media influencers?  If it’s for fashion advice, why not?  But influencers are increasingly taking the place of bona fide news as a go-to for people seeking instant information related to their own safety – like this week’s massive snowstorm stretching from the Midwest to the East.  Self-proclaimed experts like Ryan Hall, whose YouTube channel has over 3m subscribers are becoming a trusted source for sometimes critical information.  Such amateur meteorologists livestream to viewers, sometimes for hours at a time.  Experts say Hall actually does a good job of covering weather with few technical omissions.  But some others are completely unqualified and either lack content or sensationalize what they do report, or are just kids looking to get as many shares and likes as possible.  The more informative ones can serve as a bridge until the 5 o’clock news.  But thanks to social media algorithms, once you start clicking viral extreme weather sites, you get fed more and more of anything but the National Weather Service – the ultimate authority.  Self-appointed weather experts began to multiply around the time of 2024’s Hurricane Helene in which 108 people died.  In the words of one senior meteorologist for the weather app MyRadar, “The brightest colors, the most outlandish information will always get more following than actual truthful information.” https://www.npr.org/2026/01/23/nx-s1-5685033/weather-influencers-winter-storm
