LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A strike by 31k Kaiser Permanente nurses and health care professionals began today at facilities in California and Hawaii.  They say management has refused to bargain in good faith over a contract that expired several months ago, leading to a five-day walkout at that time.  Negotiations have been ongoing since last May.  During the current walkout, non-urgent appointments and elective surgeries may have to be rescheduled. https://patch.com/california/banning-beaumont/kaiser-nurses-strike-rivco-due-unfair-labor-practices

A mobile home in the Juniper Trailer Park on East Mission Road in Fallbrook was destroyed by fire last evening around 8:15p.  It was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.  No one was hurt. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/01/22/news/residential-fire-reported-on-east-mission-road/81044.html

A power outage left Fallbrook’s Mercantile Center which includes Major Market along with nearby traffic lights dark Saturday afternoon.  Affected businesses had to close.  Power was not fully restored until evening. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/01/22/news/power-outage-shuts-down-fallbrook-mercantile-center-snarls-traffic/81032.html

The city of Oceanside first adopted ordinances regulating e-bikes in 2024.  But complaints about their unsafe use more than doubled last year to over 900.  The city council is now considering amendments to the ordinances that would allow police to confiscate e-bikes from offenders.  According to police, the biggest offenders are older teenagers, which is why the city isn’t considering simply banning riders under 12.  The two hot spots for reckless e-bike behavior are Mance Buchanon Park and the Strand along the city’s main beach.  Under proposals for a temporary policy of confiscation, riders would get their bikes back after completing a safety course and would not incur any impound fees.  Final approval for the amendment by city council is expected this Wednesday. https://www.kpbs.org/news/public-safety/2026/01/23/oceanside-eyes-e-bike-seizures-following-sharp-rise-in-safety-complaints

The country of Denmark, with a population of almost 6m, has collected more than 287k signatures to an online petition to buy California.  It’s a satirical response to President Trump’s threats to acquire Greenland.  Recent escalation about potentially taking the mostly autonomous territory from Denmark by force have caused a rush of new signatures over the past week or two.  The petition says its crowdfunding goal is $1 trillion “give or take a few billion”.  It goes on to day, “Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan.” “We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price.” https://patch.com/california/los-angeles/lets-buy-ca-petition-dates-acquire-golden-state-picks-momentum-again

SPORTS

In the NFL – Conference championship weekend gave us a pair of close games.  New England topped the Broncos in Denver 10-7 even though snowy conditions often favor the home team.  The Broncos only managed to score once.  It was in the first quarter.  The Patriots answered with a game-tying touchdown in the second quarter, moved ahead with a field goal in the 3rd and held on for the next 25 minutes for the win.  In the NFC game, Seattle struck first and stayed a field goal or more ahead of the Rams for the rest of the game.  LA rallied in the third, but in spite of Matt Stafford’s 374 yards passing, didn’t manage any additional points in the fourth quarter.  Final score Seahawks 31, Rams 27.  Just like 11 years ago, it’ll be Seattle and New England in the Super Bowl, Sunday, February 8 on NBC.  Next week is the Pro Bowl at Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Since Drake Maye and the Patriots have advanced to Super Bowl 60, Cleveland’s Shedeur Sanders will replace Maye on next week’s Pro Bowl roster. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47735804/source-shedeur-sanders-named-pro-bowl-games-replacement

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained almost a half percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up about 6 tenths.  Gold soared to another record-high, up $119.70 to $5,099.40 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 11 cents to $60.96 a barrel.

Another federal government shutdown is looming for the end of this week.  18 days after the killing of Renee Good, Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year old intensive care unit nurse from city city’s VA hospital, Alex Pretti as he assisted a protester who’d been pepper-sprayed by agents.  Analysis of bystander video appears to completely contradict the story posted on X by Homeland Security that Pretti had been the aggressor.  Faced with two deaths in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, Congressional Democrats have vowed to oppose Homeland Security funds, risking another partial federal shutdown, and are demanding the impeachment of Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem.  Half of the dozen annual spending bills in the current budget are still awaiting action in the Senate.  Some Democratic support is necessary to achieve the required majority.  If Senators fail to act by midnight this Friday, funding will lapse for a number of agencies including Homeland Security.  www.apnews.com

New Target CEO, Michael Fiddelke told employees at the Minneapolis-based retail giant that “violence and loss of life in our community is incredibly painful,” but stopped short of mentioning President Trump or his administration, nor did he call for any specific policy changes.  Corporations and CEO’s have been mostly silent during the raids in Minneapolis.  But now, in addition to Target, leaders of 3m, Cargill and UnitedHealth are speaking out, although with restraint.  More than 60 Minnesota companies including those mentioned have signed a letter released by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.  Minnesota is home to 17 Fortune 500 companies and ranks fifth in Fortune 500 concentration per capita.  Even before Saturday’s shooting of Alex Pretti, a New York Times/Siena public opinion poll showed 61% of Americans think ICE’s tactics go too far. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/26/alex-pretti-shooting-target-incoming-ceo-fiddelke.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Mercy” opened in first place, selling $11.1m worth of tickets on 3,500 screens.  “Avatar: Fire and Ash” dropped to second place for the first time in six weeks with $7m in additional sales.  “Zootopia 2” and “The Housemaid” were once again #3 and #4.  “Return to Silent Hill” debuted in 7th place with $3.2m on 2k screens.  The total for the top ten films was $44m – the lowest so far this year and well below average for the past year.  Weather had a lot to do with lack of moviegoing in the Midwest and East. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/?ref_=bo_nb_we_secondarytab

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says air travel should be back to normal by about Wednesday.  Thousands of flights were cancelled over the weekend by the same storm front that brought Southern California light rain last week.  The rest of the country has been hit much harder.  More than 15k US flights were cancelled over the weekend, with yesterday being the largest single flight cancellation day since 2020.  98 flights were cancelled just at San Diego International.  About 4k more cancellations were planned nationwide today along with nearly 10k delayed flights.  Only 48 flights have been cancelled for tomorrow.  Airlines routinely cancel flights ahead of major storms to ensure that passengers and crew don’t get stranded.  All the major airlines have waived cancellation fees for customers who rebook. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/26/winter-storm-flight-cancellations.html
