Alaska Airlines is placing its biggest order ever for new jets – 105 Boeing 737 Max 10’s and five 787-10 Dreamliners. The 737 Max 10 has yet to be certified by regulators and is years behind schedule in development. Boeing currently has more than 6k aircraft on backorder. The new 737 orders lock in production slots for Alaska, who are using previous purchase options to secure the long-haul 787’s for international expansion with nonstops to Italy, South Korea and other countries. Alaska Airlines purchased Hawaiian Airlines in 2024 and currently has a fleet of 413 aircraft, which it plans to expand to 475 by 2030 and 550 by 2035. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/07/alaska-airlines-boeing-order-737-10-dreamliners.html

Hilton Hotels took the rare step of severing its affiliation with an independently-owned franchise hotel near Minneapolis after it refused booking for ICE agents. Everpeak Hospitality apologized for cancelling the reservation made by Homeland Security. But yesterday, a social media influencer posted a video made after the apology in which he posed as a Homeland Security official trying to book rooms for immigration enforcement agents and was refused by the desk clerk, who cited company policy. It was that video that caused Hilton to end its affiliation with the hotel. www.morningbrew.com

Tech companies and retailers still think smart glasses could be the next big thing. The failure-ridden category of AI wearables got a boost with release of Meta’s Display glasses through a division of Ray-Ban last fall. EssilorLuxotica is having record sales because of the glasses, which cost $799. So much so, that there aren’t enough left for export sales. In addition to an upgraded camera, Display has built-in AI features and a wristband to help answer calls and texts. Meta plans to introduce a teleprompter feature to display text notes in the lenses. www.morningbrew.com
Just what exactly is in McDonald’s popular McRib sandwich? That’s a little like asking what’s in a hot dog. Do you really want to know? A class action lawsuit filed by four plaintiffs in Illinois last month does. It alleges McRib contains lower-grade pork products like heart, tripe, and stomach, but no actual rib meat in the formed rib-shaped meat patty. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – again, think hot dogs. But the suit also alleges that by using the word “rib”, McDonald’s is able to charge a premium price for a non-premium product, causing “millions of dollars in consumer harm.” According to the online McRib locator, some restaurants charge as much as $7.99 for a McRib sandwich. McDonald’s denies the claims about the specific content of the meat patties and says the suit “distorts the facts.” www.morningbrew.com
