LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The owner of Evergreen Nursery in Escondido is suing the state of California in federal court, claiming state agriculture crews are destroying tens of thousands of his plants without compensation. Mark Collins said state employees began destroying about 32,000 citrus plants at his nursery this week. He said inspectors discovered the Asian citrus psyllid bug in some trees about five miles away and determined those trees were carrying the devastating disease, citrus greening. The entire area is under quarantine because of the infestation. Instead of testing or inspecting his property for the bug and disease, Collins says the state opted to destroy the plants. Collins estimates his losses could reach up to $3 million, which is why he’s suing the State of California in federal court for reimbursement. Evergreen has operated in Escondido for about 20 years and has been in the plant-growing business locally for roughly 80 years. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/escondido-nursery-owner-sues-california-as-state-destroys-32000-plants/3967949/?amp=1

A petition has already gotten 2k signatures to protest the renewal of a contract between the city of Escondido and ICE to allow federal agents to use the Escondido PD’s firing range. The city has had contracts with ICE dating back to 2024. That relationship is being called into question as a result of the shootings in Minneapolis. According to city councilmember Marni von Wilpert, the city council never had an opportunity to vote on the contract. She’s calling for the city to end the contract. Mayor Dane White says it will be discussed at a February city council meeting. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news

In yesterday’s earnings report, Tesla revealed its profit dropped 46% compared with a year ago. That was actually better than many analysts expected. Other parts of the company, including its energy storage division have made up for Tesla not selling as many cars as it used to. As part of its self-proclaimed pivot from a car company to a “physical AI company”, Tesla is discontinuing its high-end Model S and Model X vehicles. There are already far fewer of them being made than Models 3 and Y. Instead, they’ll focus on the Cybercab, a vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals that will replace existing Teslas in the company’s robocab business. CEO Elon Musk says the company’s future lies in robotics and AI. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/28/nx-s1-5684154/tesla-earnings-2025
Southwest Airlines’ open seating policy officially ended Tuesday. After marching to its own beat for most of its 54-year history, Southwest is acting a lot more like its rivals in a quest for profitability. Assigned seating means some passengers will be paying up to $140 extra for roomier front-of-cabin seats as well as more for aisle or window seats. The changes at Southwest began last year when it eliminated free checked baggage. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/28/southwest-airlines-luv-4q-2025-earnings.html

At an investor day event in New York City, Starbucks unveiled its latest vision to improve sales and released a long-term forecast. In his first year as CEO, Brian Nichol’s strategy tweaks have been working so far with transactions in the first fiscal quarter up for the first time in two years even though the company missed its latest earnings estimate. After years of prioritizing mobile orders and profits at the expense of customers and employees, Starbucks reintroduced small touches like the condiment bar and having baristas write little personal messages on cups. It also invested in additional store staff and café remodels at $100k each. The chain is now projecting same store sales will grow at least 3%, revenue will increase at least 5% and per share earnings will increase from $3.35 to $4 over the next two years. During that time, Starbucks expects to increase net U.S. locations by about 400. More immediately, it will reintroduce tiers to its loyalty program, add Energy Refreshers to its menu, and install more efficient espresso machines. Internationally, Starbucks is following McDonald’s and Coca-Cola’s lead by refranchising international restaurants and bottlers, respectively, to cut operating costs and increase earnings. Starbucks is entering a joint venture with Boyu Capital to run its business in China, the company’s second largest market after the U.S. So far, investors remain skeptical with Starbucks stock down 12% over the past year and off by 1% in today’s morning trading. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/29/starbucks-investor-day-updates-brian-niccol-turnaround.html
