LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

In a marathon session Tuesday evening, the Temecula school board discussed two policies to replace the parent notification and flag policies it rescinded in December.  The first would require school employees to send students who want to discuss their gender or sexuality to the principal or a school counselor.  The other calls for classrooms to be “neutral” places and for instruction to avoid “sensitive topics”.  The first policy will now go to subcommittee.  The neutral classroom policy will have to be negotiated with the Temecula teachers’ union.  It was introduced to the board by newly elected members Emil Barham and board president Melinda Anderson. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/29/temecula-school-board-discusses-neutral-classrooms-policy/

Then yesterday, President Trump signed executive orders promoting parental choice in the selection of schools for their children and ending federal funding for schools that teach critical race theory or other “anti-American” ideologies including those involving gender.  The two actions were among Trump’s campaign promises and will likely face immediate court challenges. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-sign-orders-school-choice-antisemitism-white-house-says-2025-01-29/

The Oceanside City Council has delayed a final vote on the 73-unit, six-story apartment complex at the entrance to Oceana until April 23.  Staff will take the next two moths to review the possible safety and environmental concerns raised by neighbors in the seniors-only community to the project.  The project qualifies for increased housing density and other waivers by virtue of providing a portion of the units as affordable housing. https://thecoastnews.com/oceanside-delays-vote-on-6-story-vista-bella-project/

A 63-year old employee at a Murrieta daycare has been arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse.  The investigation of Marvin Ulloa from Ulloa Family Daycare began over three weeks ago involving a child who had previously attended the facility.  Murrieta Police are continuing the investigation and looking for possible additional victims to step forward. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/29/murrieta-daycare-employee-arrested-suspected-of-sexual-abuse-of-a-child/

A 32-year old Moreno Valley man has been charged with threatening public officials.  Jesse William Wykel is accused of posting a message to online platform, WeTip threatening to kill officers and claiming city council members were “infiltrating his phone”.  Specific potential targets have been identified as a Moreno Valley councilmember, the captain of the Moreno Valley sheriff’s station, and the mayor of Murrieta.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/29/threats-to-moreno-valley-councilmember-murrieta-mayor-lead-to-arrest/

The Oceanside Fire Department says it is investigating last night’s fire at the Regal Cinema downtown on Mission Avenue as arson.  Firefighters first responded at about 10:20p.  The fire was contained to the point of origin at a plastic drainpipe on the building’s front wall.  A storage room on the other side of the wall was heavily smoke-damaged.  No suspects had been identified as of this morning. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/oceanside-fire-department-investigating-possible-arson-at-regal-cinema

SPORTS

In the NFL – This year’s Pro Bowl game is Sunday at noon on ESPN and ABC.

In the NBA – The Clippers beat the Spurs in San Antonio 128-116.  Other winners included Brooklyn, Indiana, Toronto, Boston, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, Dallas in 137-136 squeaker over New Orleans, Minnesota and Golden State.   Among five games tonight, the Lakers are at Washington.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said yesterday that he’d like to shorten games to 40 minutes, by going from 12-minute quarters to 10.  He notes that the NBA is the only basketball league around the world that plays 48 minutes.  With breaks and timeouts, the average NBA game this season takes a total of two hours sixteen minutes.  That’s within a minute of the average for the past fifteen seasons, according to ESPN.  Cynics have always said it’s only the last two minutes of a basketball game that matter anyway. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/43617073/nba-commissioner-adam-silver-floats-idea-shortening-games-10-minute-quarters

In college hoops – Unranked Maryland upset #17 Wisconsin 76-68.  Five other Top 25 teams won against unranked opponents.  #4 Alabama prevailed over #14 Mississippi State 88-84.  Tonight, USD hosts Pepperdine.  UCSD is at Hawai’i.  And UCLA hosts #16 Oregon.

In the NHL – Last night’s winners were Minnesota, Florida, New Jersey, Vancouver and Pittsburgh 3-2 in overtime at Utah.

In Major League Baseball – Ha-Seong Kim will not be wearing a Padres uniform this season.  He’s signed a two-year $29m deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Kim is recovering from shoulder surgery and could be playing as soon as May.  The 29-year old from South Korea won a Golden Glove and finished #14 in national MVP voting in 2023.  His statistics were down across the board last season, but he was still a fan favorite up to his shoulder injury in August.  San Diego has three other potential shortstops.  So, it was expected that Kim would leave as a free agent this year.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 gained two tenths.  The Nasdaq was down a tenth.  Comex gold shot up $52.20 to $2,845.70 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 25 cents at $72.87 a barrel.

UPS stock suffered its worst day ever following the announcement that it would cut its business with its largest single customer, Amazon in half.  CEO Carol Tomé explained that the move was part of a plan to focus on profitability rather than volume.  She said that because the Amazon contract was up for renewal this year, it was time to reassess their nearly 30-year relationship.  Amazon accounts for a little under 12% of the shipping company’s total revenue.  UPS has been short of its quarterly revenue estimates the past year and has warned revenue would decline this year.   Its stock was down 17% at midday today. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20250130196/ups-to-cut-its-amazon-business-by-more-than-50-heres-why

President Trump yesterday singed a settlement agreement to end his lawsuit against Meta for suspending his account following the January 6 attack on the Capitol.  It reportedly requires Meta to pay about $25m including $22m to a fund for the upcoming Trump Presidential library. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/29/business/trump-meta-settlement/index.html

Chili’s is hot.  The restaurant chain just completed its third consecutive quarter of double-digit sales growth.  Its parent company, Brinker International’s stock was up 16% today on the news.  And they did it by not raising prices, but instead increasing foot traffic.  Visits to Chili’s restaurants open at least a year increased by 20% in the 4th quarter.  It’s one of the most successful restaurant turnarounds in history.  Viral videos promoting Chili’s mozzarella sticks and Triple Dipper platter of those sticks along with egg rolls and chicken wings have won over younger customers who thought Chili’s was just a place their parents went.  Its $10.99 Big Smasher burger and $6 margaritas have also fueled the comeback enough so that Applebee’s is copying with its own $9.99 Really Big Meal Deal.  Applebee’s and Denny’s had announced major store closings recently, while Red Lobster and TGI Friday’s filed for bankruptcy last year.  But opportunities are there for fast casual restaurants as customers reach their breaking point with increasing prices at McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/30/business/chilis-brinker-international-stock/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

British pop star, muse to the Rolling Stones and all-around 1960’s “it” girl, Marianne Faithful has died at the age of 78.  She was a celebrity by 17, homeless in her mid-20s and an inspiration to younger artists in her 30s.  She inspired one of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ first hits, “As Tears Go By”, recording a version of it herself in just two takes.  She also inspired or otherwise contributed to “Let’s Spend the Night Together”, “Sister Morphine” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.  Faithful and Jagger were one of the most glamourous couples of “Swinging London” in 1966. Faithful was married three times.  In her life, she battled addictions, anorexia, hepatitis, breast cancer and other problems and wrote a totally uncensored autobiography in 1979.  https://apnews.com/article/marianne-faithfull-obit-rolling-stones-broken-english-54e9ba7a549142d2a40bea6d88e68a38

Riverside County health officials today urged people who come in regular contact with chickens and cows to take extra precautions.  The latest strain of bird flu has been found at 25 local dairies and poultry farms including one backyard coop.  Risk to the general population is low.  But measures are needed to prevent the spread of disease, which requires the destruction of all chickens in any farms where it’s found.  Human symptoms of bird flu include red eyes, coughing, sore throat, clogged sinuses, diarrhea, vomiting, body aches, fatigue, trouble breathing, and fever.  Federal health officials say there is no record of any person-to-person transmission of the virus.  As many as five dozen people have reported the illness and one has died from it. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/30/dairy-cows-chickens-in-riverside-county-test-positive-for-bird-flu/

A report published today by the non-profit advocacy group, Common Sense Media says fake content is increasingly misleading teens.  The group surveyed a thousand teenagers between 13 and 18 about media made with AI tools.  One third said they’d been deceived by fake online content.  Forty-one percent said they found content that was real, yet misleading and 22% say they’d shared information that turned out to be fake.  A different CSM study last fall found 70% of teenagers had at least tried generative AI.  A July study by Cornell, the University of Washington and the University of Waterloo found that the leading artificial Intelligence models are still prone to what the industry calls AI hallucinations – meaning platforms like ChatGPT still sometimes create false information out of thin air with no basis in fact.  Today’s study concluded that teens’ current perception of the accuracy of online content signals a distrust in digital platforms, and that tech companies need to prioritize transparency and develop features to improve credibility. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/american-teens-are-increasingly-misled-by-fake-content-online-report-shows/ar-AA1y7KSl
