Activists are demanding the permanent removal of ICE and Customs and Border Protection from cities all across the country.  Minnesota organizers, led by several student groups at the University of Minnesota are calling for a “national shutdown”, meaning “No work.  No school.  No shopping.  And stop funding ICE.” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/29/ice-out-strike-protests-explained

The wildflowers have been having an exceptional mid-winter bloom in and around Borrego Springs over the past couple of weeks thanks to generous December rains.  Will this translate into a big year for wildflowers here in the foothills in another month or two … especially places like Walker Canyon, north of Lake Elsinore?  Experts say it could, IF it doesn’t get too hot before then.  It all depends on how green the hills can stay until then.  www.pe.com

With the exception of Monday, Pala will have temperatures in the mid-80s for the next week.  That’s about ten degrees above normal for January.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

A federal spending deal may have been reached.  The Senate is planning to pass a two-week continuing resolution to keep the Department of Homeland Security funded while passing five spending bills that would cover much of the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year.  So close to the weekend deadline, it’s likely there will be a partial federal shutdown before the House has a chance to vote on whatever changes the Senate makes to any or all of the six funding bills.  The House isn’t schedule to be in session again until Monday.    https://federalnewsnetwork.com/congress/2026/01/trump-says-negotiations-to-avoid-shutdown-are-close-after-senate-blocks-early-vote-on-spending-package-with-dhs-funding/
