A second fire in downtown Oceanside early yesterday morning is believed to be unrelated to the arson fire at the Regal Theater on Mission Avenue late Wednesday evening.  Less than three hours after that first fire, the second one was reported at American Tire Depot on North Coast Highway near Surfrider Way.  It appears to have started electrically in or near a heating and air conditioning unit on the roof.  The fire was contained to the lobby. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/30/crews-douse-fires-in-oceanside-movie-theater-tire-shop/

The White House now says 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and 10% on goods from China will go into effect tomorrow.  They didn’t say whether there would be any exemptions.  Economists note that while tariffs or taxes aimed at foreign goods from foreign countries can have an effect on those countries’ economies, they almost always end up costing consumers in this country because it’s the companies that import the goods who pay the tariffs and then pass on the cost to consumers.  Various economists have said the increase to American consumers from President Trump’s tariffs will be anywhere from $1,700 to over $5k per household this year. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/31/trump-tariffs-mexico-canada-china/

Workers at 27 Southern California Costco stores are preparing to strike as a midnight deadline looms.  The Teamsters union represents about 18k Costco workers in six Western states.  The company says its labor agreement with the Teamsters only applies to about 10% of its 617 U.S. stores.  It’s unclear if the strike would close stores.  Locations that could be affected include Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/31/thousands-of-costco-workers-prepare-to-strike-with-midnight-contract-deadline-looming/

The head of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr has sent a letter to PBS and NPR notifying them that the agency’s enforcement bureau is looking into whether some sponsorship announcements on public TV and radio stations are actually commercials, which are prohibited on stations carrying the networks.  Carr has also said he supports the elimination of federal funding for public broadcasters.  Funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting comes from Congress, not PBS or NPR.  Both networks have issued statements saying that they are following existing regulations for announcements about donations.  Full disclosure:  Pala’s KPRI receives no funding from CPB and is not associated with NPR (National Public Radio).  It also adheres to the strictest interpretation of underwriting rules and regulations for announcements acknowledging donations for the operation of the station. https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/fcc-chair-carr-orders-investigation-into-pbs-npr-sponsorships-supports-ending-federal-funding-of-pbs-npr

Legoland in Carlsbad is laying off most of its in-house performers.  87 out of a total of 97 being let go are identified to the state Economic Development Department as performers.  Others include stage managers and a production specialist.  Legoland in Florida is laying off 234 workers.  A new outside provider will staff shows and parades to the theme parks once an agreement is reached with the unidentified vendor.  The changeover should be complete by summer. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/30/legoland-to-lay-off-most-of-its-performers/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Food and Drug Administration today approved a pain pill designed to eliminate the risk of addiction from opioids including Vicodin and Oxycontin.  Journavx from Vertex Pharmaceuticals is said to be the first new approach to managing pain from surgeries and injuries in more than 20 years.  It’s an alternative to opioids and over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.  Studies of 870 patients recovering from surgeries showed the Vertex drug worked better than a placebo, but not as well as a traditional opioid-acetaminophen combination pill.  And for now, it’s a lot more expensive – $15.50 per pill compared to a dollar or less for generic opioids. https://apnews.com/article/nonopioid-painkiller-fda-vertex-pharmaceuticals-b1dd4276fce3d88ff32e3062e95f408f

On this day in music history – January 31

  • In 1957, Decca Records announced that Bill Haley & His Comets had sold over one million copies of “Rock Around the Clock” in Britain alone.  Interestingly, most of them were 10-inch 78 rpm discs – a format that had just about disappeared in America, though a few would continue to be pressed up until late 1960.
  • In 1967, The Beatles finished filming their “Strawberry Fields Forever” promotional film at Knolle Park in Kent.  The film was shot in color for the benefit of the U.S. market since the BBC was still broadcasting in black and white only.  This was the day that John Lennon bought an 1843 poster from an antique shop in Surrey which gave him most of the lyrics for the Sgt. Pepper’s album song, “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite”.
  • In 1969, Led Zeppelin played the first of two nights at the Fillmore East in New York City.  They were second on the bill.  It’s alleged that headliners, Iron Butterfly refused to follow them … they were that good.

  • In 1976, ABBA knocked Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” out of the British #1 singles position after nine weeks with “Mamma Mia”.  Ironically, the Queen song contains the lyrics, “Mamma Mia Mamma Mia”.
  • In 1981, Blondie was at #1 with “The Tide is High” – their third U.S. chart topper
  • In 1987, Paul Simon had the #1 album with “Graceland” which stayed on the charts for over 100 weeks.  It won the Album of the Year Grammy for 1987 and the Record of the Year Grammy a year later for 1988.
  • In 2007, Jim Morrison helped fight global warming when “Woman in the Window”, an unreleased poem he recorded shortly before his death 36 years earlier was set to music and used to publicize the Global Cool campaign.

Born on this day …

  • In 1941, session bass player Jerry Scheff who worked with Elvis in the 60s and 70s and on The Doors final recordings among others.
