Today is Groundhog Day. Before you begin your Bill Murray film marathon, here are some facts and stats about Pennsylvania’s famous weather-predicting rodent. German settlers brought with them the European tradition of watching badgers or hedgehogs to see what kind of weather they instinctively prepared for. Folklore held that if one of those animals saw his shadow on February 2, or Candlemas, the day clergy blessed candles, there would be six more weeks of winter. Here in America, they substituted groundhogs. According to the National Weather Service, the first official U.S. Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, PA in 1887. Since then, the official Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil – of whom there have been many over the years – has predicted a longer-lasting winter 108 times, an early spring 21 times, was a no-show once, and there are no records for ten other years. That means he predicted a longer winter 84% of the time. This morning, with tens of thousands of people gathered in 1 degree above zero weather, Phil told his handler he definitely saw his shadow. So, there will be six more weeks of winter, same as the last five times. By the way, according to the National Weather Service, Phil’s accuracy average is 38%. Tossing a coin would be more accurate. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/article/groundhog-day-2026-punxsutawney-phil-sees-his-shadow-predicting-6-more-weeks-of-winter-122739121.html
Forget about Spring. In Pala, summer has been here for several days and will continue with highs in the 80s for at least another week. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

The Rams have signed coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead to multi-year contract extensions. Snead has been GM since 2012. McVay was hired in 2017. When it comes to stadium food, sometimes less is more. The Atlanta Falcons began the trend towards lower concessions prices in 2017 with its “fan first” menu. Beers that previously cost $8 were reduced to $5. $8 hot dogs were slashed to $2 and guess what? The team made more money with the new lower prices. Total transactions jumped 30%, merchandise sales rose 20%, and the average number of items per transaction increased 20%. That caused the idea to spread. In 2024, Ryan Smith’s NBA Jazz and NHL Mammoth rolled out several popular concession items between $2 and $3. Soon after, The Phoenix Suns and Baltimore Ravens announced similar value items. Just don’t expect any bargains at a Washington Commanders home game. According to AmericanCraftBeer.com, a 16-ounce beer at a Commanders game last season was $16.49 – the most expensive in the NFL. www.morningbrew.com

House Speaker Mike Johnson is “confident” the latest government shutdown will end by tomorrow. He won’t be able to use the quickest way to pass legislation presented over the weekend by the Senate. The so-called, suspension of the rules requires bills to achieve a two thirds majority. The vote on funding most of the federal government for the rest of the year and the Department of Homeland security for just two weeks will be mostly along party lines. There are currently 218 Republican, 213 Democrat, and four vacant House seats. The shutdown is going to delay the Labor Department’s January jobs report. www.morningbrew.com
Walmart and Target each got new CEOs yesterday. Walmart’s John Furner began part time in the garden department of an Arkansas Supercenter 33 years ago. He’s been president and CEO of Sam’s Club since 2019. Target’s new head honcho is Michael Fiddelke. He worked his was up through Target’s ranks beginning as a finance intern in 2003. He became chief financial officer in 2019 and chief operating officer in 2024. There’s been a rash of CEO turnover to start 2026 as retailers try to find a magic key to challenging economic conditions. Speaking of “magic key”, Disney’s board of directors meets this week to vote on CEO Bob Iger’s replacement. www.morningbrew.com
Disney’s latest quarterly report topped analyst estimates. The experiences division including theme parks, resorts and cruises topped $10b in quarterly revenue for the first time. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/02/disney-dis-earnings-q1-26.html

Over the weekend at the movies, three new major releases placed first, second, and third in attendance. “Send Help” debuted in first with $20m on 3,500 screens. “Iron Lung” was second with $17.8m on 500 fewer screens. “Melania” defied predictions and sold $7m worth of tickets on half as many screens as Send Help. “Zootopia 2” dropped one place to fourth with $5.8m. “Shelter” debuted in 5th with $5.5m. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” dropped to 6th. It’s 7-week total of $386m is about average for the three Avatar films. It’s actually doing better internationally. The total for this weekend’s top ten was up significantly from last weekend, but still below average for the year so far. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W05/
Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny cleaned up at last night’s Grammy Awards. The New York Times pointed out that could have been because for the first time in more than a decade Beyonce, Taylor Swift and/or Adele weren’t in the race for the gramophone statuettes. Lamar won Five awards including record of the year. With 27 total, he is now the most-decorated rap artist in Grammy history. Bad Bunny won album of the year for “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos”. Billie Eilish and Finneas won song of the year for “Wildflower”. Olivia Dean won for best new artist. www.morningbrew.com
Today’s water cooler talk about last night’s awards ceremonies centered on the great show-opening performance by Rosie and Bruno Mars. Alex Warren’s performance during the best new artist medley had technical difficulties as he struggled to say on tempo and the sound mix buried his vocals. Justin Bieber’s first major performance in four years wearing nothing but shiny silver boxing shorts and socks was odd, disjointed, and got a poor reaction on social media. Everyone loved Sabrina Carpenter’s airline-themed performance of “Manchild”. Trevor Noah was the host of last night’s awards for the sixth and final time – which is a good thing if he thinks roaming the audience and chatting up and singing Bad Bunny one of his own songs is a funny bit. Cher had a Warren Beatty-Faye Dunaway moment when she tried to walk away after her performance when she still needed to present the record of the year award. She then mistakenly announced the winner was Luther Vandross, instead of Kendrick Lamar for the song, “Luther”. For many, the highlight of the night was the tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, led by Post Malone, Slash and Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith. And after decades of being carried on CBS, the Grammys will move to ABC next year. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/music/articles/grammys-2026-best-worst-moments-044449390.html

His son told the New York Times his father had been battling prostate cancer. www.NYTimes.com
