After a couple of months of on-air operation under test authority, the Pala Band of Mission Indians received its license for what at the time went under the call letters, KOPA on this day in 2011.  Since then, Rez Radio has served the local tribal community and all local residents with entertainment, news, and local emergency information at no cost to anyone with a radio.  Later that year, we initiated live streaming that enabled anyone with an internet connection anywhere in the world to listen in.  Volunteer programmers began collecting awards from the San Diego Press Club and Southern California Broadcast Association – well over two dozen over the years.  Our core of volunteers have anywhere between four and almost 15 years apiece with Rez Radio.  They include:  Mark Gleason, Chris Carmichael, Joel Rafael, Elijah Duro, Jim McInnes, Janine Harty, Ric Nicastro, and Tony Pepper.  Former volunteer programmers whose shows are still heard on Rez Radio include, Darlene Vega, Doreen Kolb, and Curt Cuscino.  Engineering assistance comes from Bill Lipis.  Robert Gonzalez drives our hippy bus, Daisy.  We get event and remote broadcast help from the Cupa Center’s Mike Aguilar.  And station assistant, Eric Ortega has been on the staff for almost the entire 15 years.  While we are seeing more revenue from non-profit and government organizations through paid public service announcements, the Pala Band of Mission Indians’ consistent support of the operational budget for the station has ensured quality programming and reliable emergency services for the community on Pala Rez Radio.  We celebrate our 15th anniversary with a grant-financed switchover to clean, renewable solar power for our entire operation as of a few days ago.  Here’s to the future!

Higher temperatures will bring higher winds to Pala beginning tomorrow.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a.

In a rare mega-merger of companies run by the same person, Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX and his artificial intelligence company xAI are combining with a net valuation of $1.25 trillion.  Musk says the move will create scale that will help him put data centers in space, fund bases on the moon and a colony on Mars.  His actual words were a little more out there.  It will “make a sentient sun to understand the Universe and extend the light of consciousness to the stars!” www.morningbrew.com

The French office of Elon Musk’s X social media platform were raided by the Paris cybercrime unit today.  The tech billionaire has been summoned for questioning in April.  Some X employees will be questioned as witnesses.  The raid was part of a year-long algorithm abuse investigation that has now been broadened to include sexual deepfakes by Grok and the circulation of “Holocaust denial content”. https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/03/business/x-paris-prosecutor-raid-intl

President Trump posted on Truth Social yesterday that that he and India’s prime minister have reached a trade deal to lower tariffs on goods imported from India to 18% from the current 25% and remove the additional 25% Trump had tacked on to punish India for purchasing Russian oil, which will cease under the agreement.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the post. www.morningbrew.com

The White House said yesterday it is launching Project Vault in an effort to weaken China’s dominance of certain crucial commodities – mainly, minerals.  More than a dozen large corporations, including General Motors, Boeing and Alphabet are investing in the creation of a 60-day stockpile of metals and minerals that US industry can tap into during an emergency.  It could also alleviate precious metal price spikes.  The US will also convene a meeting of 20 allied nations to discuss how to fortify the international supply chain for minerals to counteract China. www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

PepsiCo’s fourth quarter earnings and revenue topped Wall Street estimates.  But snack foods are not adding to that bottom line.  Sales in that division were down 1%.  Have you seen the retail price printed on a bag of Doritos?  A lot of customers won’t buy at full retail price and have told Pepsi so.  That’s why the company announced that chips from its North American food division will get new lower prices in an effort to “improve competitiveness and the purchase frequency of our brands.”  Increased productivity will make up the difference in profit.  Pepsi’s product lineup will also be cut by 20% to decrease costs.  No word on what the new snack food prices will be, so it’s unlikely they’ll be in place in time for Sunday’s big game. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/03/pepsico-pep-q4-2025-earnings.html
