LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A fully engulfed EDCO trash truck on fire closed Stage Coach Lane between Reche Road and East Fallbrook Street in Fallbrook this morning. The incident happened just after 9:30a near 547 S. Stage Coach Lane.  Authorities were considering dumping the truck’s load onto the roadway to manage the situation.  Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes through this afternoon. www.thevillagenews.com

Yesterday morning’s traffic jam on the 78 freeway was due to a fatal accident involving a motorcycle shortly after 4:30a westbound near Rancho Santa Fe Road.  All westbound lanes were closed through the morning commute with eastbound lanes heavily affected by those slowing to see the activity.  The Sig Alert wasn’t lifted until well after 9a.  https://patch.com/california/san-diego/fatal-crash-sr-78-prompts-sigalert-north-county

An electrical fire seriously damaged an Oceanside duplex yesterday.  The fire broke out in the 4000 block of Aeolia Way south of Cannon Road just after 11:30a.  Flames were contained to the garages, but adjacent rooms sustained extensive smoke damage.  One pet cat was found dead inside.  Another was missing.  The fire department reminds residents that outdated electrical wiring, not designed for modern appliances and electronics is an often-overlooked risk to property and personal safety.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/fire-seriously-damages-oceanside-duplex

Today is the birthday of Rosa Parks, whose famous bus ride 64 years ago in Montgomery, Alabama was a key point in the civil rights movement.  To honor Parks, North County Transit is making public transportation free today for all Coaster, Sprinter, Breeze, Flex, and Lift riders.  On the NCTD+ app, enter the promo code “ROSAPARKS” to ride for free.  Transit Equity Day is also being celebrated in LA, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and on Metrolink. https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/free-rides-in-north-county-on-february-4-in-honor-of-rosa-parks/ https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/02/04/free-bus-and-train-rides-tuesday-for-transit-equity-day/

SPORTS

In the NFL – Veteran Rams receiver Cooper Kupp says the team intends to trade him … and he wished it weren’t happening.  He’d hope to play his entire career in LA. The 2021 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl 56 MVP hasn’t performed as well since then and missed four games this season with injuries.  Meanwhile, his current contract extension would have taken up $30m in cap space next season.    https://apnews.com/article/rams-cooper-kupp-trade-53a86fb6e0d36c8ce77edd116127ae76

Kansas City’s Andy Reid confirmed today that he’ll be back as head coach for the Chiefs next season. It’ll be his 27th season as an NFL head coach – 13 with the Chiefs and 14 with the Eagles.  He and the Chiefs are looking for their fourth Super Bowl win and third in a row under Reid this Sunday against the Eagles. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43692244/andy-reid-says-return-chiefs-coach-2025

In the NBA – Last night’s winners were Washington, Atlanta, New York, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Denver, Indiana, Golden State, and Portland 121-119 in overtime against Phoenix.  Seven games tonight including the Clippers hosting the Lakers.  New LA Laker, Luka Doncic is close to returning to the court from a calf strain, but not tonight. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/43691650/shocked-luka-doncic-excited-join-lakers-mavericks-trade

In college hoops – #16 Kansas upset #8 Iowa State 69-52.  That was yesterday’s only Top 25 game.

In the NHL – Just one game last night.  Ottawa beat the Predators in Nashville 5-2.  A full schedule tonight including the Ducks hosting Dallas.

In minor league hockey – The San Diego Gulls next game is Friday hosting Coachella Valley.

In Major League Baseball – Following all possible appeals, the league has fired umpire Pat Hoberg for “sharing” legal sports betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for deleting messages important to the investigation into his conduct.  MLB says Hoberg “adamantly denied” betting on games directly or indirectly.  Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said there is no evidence of Hoberg betting on or manipulating the outcomes of any games.  In its statement, the league says Hoberg was fired for failing to “uphold the integrity of the game.”  38-year old Hoberg can apply for reinstatement with the start of spring training next year. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43680990/mlb-upholds-firing-ump-pat-hoberg-gambling-violations

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals’ next game is Saturday in Toronto.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell a small fraction.  The S&P 500 gained four tenths of a percent.  The Nasdaq was up eight tenths.  Gold traded up $16.40 on the Comex at $2,873.50.  Oil fell with West Texas Intermediate Crude down 53 cents at $72.63 a barrel.

While agreements with Canada and Mexico over the past couple of days have held off proposed tariffs on goods from those countries until next month pending further negotiations, China retaliated against the U.S. just minutes after sweeping tariffs by the U.S. went into effect today with a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery and large engine cars imported from the U.S. beginning Monday.  The measured response by China is its way of protecting its own fragile overall economy and avoiding an all-out trade war.  It also might not have much effect.  The U.S. exports relatively little to China.  But the U.S. imports over $200b worth of cell phones and cell phone parts, computers and accessories, electric devices, toys, games and furniture from China annually.  U.S. importers and retailers will either have to absorb the increased cost or pass it on to consumers.  China also announced it will begin an antitrust investigation into Google.  Presidents Trump and Xi Jinping plan to talk in the next few days. https://apnews.com/article/china-tariffs-us-trump-150fab3a44ec055845e47c82bde544c2

In another setback for the California housing market, State Farm is asking state regulators for an emergency 22% rate increase for homeowners’ policies to cover the flood of insurance claims from the LA wildfires.  They’re also seeking a 15% hike for renters and condo owners, and 38% for rental dwellings. The company says it has already paid out over $1b, after receiving more than 8,700 claims from the LA fires.  In its media release today, State Farm says that due to a lack of alignment between price and risk, “for every $1 collected in premiums, State Farm General has spent $1.26, resulting in over $5b of cumulative underwriting loss” in the past six years.  But the non-profit Consumer Federation of America says State Farm “has been quite profitable in California over the last several years.”  And that if they think they need a rate increase, they should go through the regular process, not just set off alarms and ask for exceptions in the middle of disaster recovery. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/02/03/state-farm-seeks-22-emergency-rate-hike-after-receiving-8700-wildfire-claims/  www.usatoday.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Rather than raise its prices, the Waffle House chain is adding a temporary 50-cent per egg surcharge to cover the huge increase in the price of eggs.  Bird flu is forcing farmers to slaughter millions of chickens per month, forcing the price of eggs to twice what it was 18 months ago.  Economists say the price will go up another 20% this year.  Georgia-based Waffle House – known for its inexpensive breakfasts, has about 2k locations in 25 states – none on the West Coast.  But its egg surcharge sets a precedent that other chains might follow. https://apnews.com/article/waffle-house-eggs-bird-flu-89025262684f051bdf8f7350dcf1613a

According to TD Economics, things that could get more expensive for American consumers if proposed tariffs against Mexico and Canada do eventually go into effect include the following.  With car parts crossing the US borders with Mexico and Canada multiple times before a vehicle is built, the average car could cost $3k more even if the completed vehicle is assembled in the U.S.  Beer, tequila and other Mexican beverages could go up by an unknown amount.  Modelo became the #1 beer brand sold in the U.S. in 2023 and remains in the top spot … for now.  Importers could increase the price to cover the tariffs, or import less, which could also increase prices.  Even though Fallbrook was once the avocado capital, that honor now belongs to Mexico.  90% of avocadoes sold in the U.S. now come from Mexico.  Home prices would increase without a tariff exemption for Canadian lumber.  Canada also accounts for 75% of the world’s supply of maple syrup.  And they are America’s largest foreign supplier of crude oil.  Last year, 61% of our imported oil came from Canada.  Always-volatile retail gasoline prices would definitely increase with tariffs against Canada.  https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvgpvq20qmdo
