Written by on February 4, 2026

The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

It was another bad morning for commuters from Menifee.  For the second straight day, a crash blocked at least one southbound lane near Scott Road for over an hour beginning at 7:22a. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/crash-snarls-morning-rush-hour-traffic-murrieta

Escondido PD detectives are looking into a possible murder-suicide in that city discovered early yesterday.  Police took an incomplete 9-1-1 call from the 800 block of Ohio Street around 4:45a.  Officers arrived to find a deceased man in one car and a deceased woman in the other.  Both suffered gunshot wounds.  Police have not provided further descriptions of the victims or vehicles. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4475345654495-murder-suicide-investigation-underway-in-escondid

Oceanside’s city council voted last week not to certify an environmental impact report for a proposed 83-home development across the street from Guajome Regional Park.  This haltss the project, known as Guajome Lake Homes until the developer addresses what councilmembers feel are shortcomings in the EIR – namely, traffic impact, biodiversity and wildlife connectivity.  The project also conflicts with zoning standards including equestrian and scenic overlays.  Local citizens against the project say the development as designed sets a bad precedent for the area. https://thecoastnews.com/oceanside-rejects-guajome-lake-homes-project-backs-appeal/

For today’s anniversary of civil-rights icon Rosa Parks’ birth in 1913, North County Transit will recognize “Transit Equity Day” by joining transit agencies around the country in offering free rides.  In 1955, the then-42-year-old Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott that ultimately helped lead to desegregated public transit.  Riders can use all NCTD services — COASTER, SPRINTER, BREEZE, FLEX, NCTD+ and LIFT — free of charge all day today.  For those traveling on NCTD+ within the San Marcos and Vista micro transit zones, customers can use promo code: ROSAPARKS in the NCTD+ app for free rides. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/nctd-offering-free-rides-all-wednesday-in-honor-of-rosa-parks-birthday

Weather in Pala will be hot and windy today.  Significantly cooler but still windy tomorrow with a slight chance of rain tomorrow night.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NFL – Last night in San Francisco, the NFC All Stars beat the AFC All Stars 66-52.  It’s a game nobody pays much attention to because there is almost no serious defense.  Nobody wants to get hurt in game that doesn’t count for anything. https://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/401831718/nfc-afc

This year’s Puppy Bowl XXII which has become a traditional television counterprogramming event to the NFL’s Super Bowl, will feature a halftime game for senior dogs.  150 dogs from 72 animal shelters across the United States take part on the show, simulcast Sunday on Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, truTV, HBO Max and discovery+. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47827993/puppy-bowl-xxii-half-game-senior-dogs

In the NBA – The Lakers beat the Nets in Brooklyn 125-109.  Other winners were Detroit, Utah, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia and Phoenix.

Right in the middle of his highest-scoring season in six years, the Clippers are trading James Harden to Cleveland.  The Cavaliers are giving up point guard Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick.  The deal could be approved today as the Cavs play the Clippers in Inglewood.  With his 25.4 point per game average this year, Harden has been an important part of keeping the Clippers in play-in position.  Sportswriters say this deal is good for Cleveland right now and for the Clippers looking to the future. https://apnews.com/article/clippers-cavaliers-trade-harden-garland-8caf2285682a2d1098759b9a2710e3b3

In college basketball – The seven Top 25 teams that played last night all won against unranked opponents.  San Diego State topped Wyoming 72-63.  UCLA routed Rutgers 98-66.  USC beat Indiana 81=75.

In the NHL – The Ducks beat the visiting Kraken 4-2.  Last night’s other winners were Columbus, Philadelphia, Carolina, Toronto, and the Islanders and Lightning, both in overtime games.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls next game is tonight hosting Henderson.

In Major League Baseball – Mickey Lolich, who pitched and won three complete games for the Tigers in the 1968 World Series has died at the age of 85.  Though Denny McLain was the star of the Detroit pitching staff that year with 31 regular season wins, Lolich took the spotlight and the series Most Valuable Player award with a 1.67 ERA and Game 7 road victory over the Cardinals’ Bob Gibson. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47827677/mickey-lolich-1968-world-series-hero-tigers-dies-85

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is this Saturday hosting Saskatchewan.

The opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics are this Friday on NBC.

Heavy snowfall forced Milan Cortina Games organizers to cancel the opening women’s downhill training session for tomorrow.  That’s a big break for Lindsey Vonn as she recovers from her ruptured ACL.  7 inches of fresh snow have fallen on the downhill course this week with more coming down. https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/47827135/first-women-downhill-training-canceled-heavy-snow

Ironically, at the same time, the IOC is considering staging future Winter Olympics earlier in the year because of warming temperatures.  Every Winter Games has been held in February since Innsbruck in 1964.  But moving the Games to January would be a disruption to World Cup races and events and would clash with NFL and NBA schedules.  Because global warming is at the heart of this discussion, Norwegian skier Nikolai Schirmer handed the IOC a petition signed by more than 21k people and professional athletes asking that fossil fuel companies be banned from sponsoring winter sports. https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/47824882/ioc-open-earlier-winter-olympics-due-warmer-temperatures

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow was up a small fraction.  The S&P 500 fell 7 tenths of a percent.  And the Nasdaq was off by 1.8%.  Gold gained $10.60 on the Comex, trading at $4,943.90 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $2.05 to $65.26 a barrel.

The House of Representatives passed a funding package to reopen the government yesterday, three days after previous funding expired.  $1.2 trillion was approved to keep most government agencies open through the end of this year.  But the Department of Homeland Security will only be funded through February 13 as Congressional Republicans and Democrats continue to negotiate potential restrictions on immigration agents.  The approved bills now go to the White House.  www.morningbrew.com

Chipotle’s quarterly report depressed investors.  Traffic to its restaurants fell for the fourth straight quarter and same-store sales for 2026 are expected to be flat.  Stock in the company has fallen by a third over the past year with its market value down by about $51b.  Chipotle will try to improve the chain’s operations and add new menu items, rather than try discount promotions.  The chain has a strong base of higher-income customers. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/03/chipotle-cmg-q4-2025-earnings.html

Yum Brands, which also owns Taco Bell and KFC announced it will close 250 underperforming Pizza Hut locations in the first half of this year.  That’s about 3% of its US stores.  Specific locations were not revealed.  In spite of its new $5 pizza, Pizza Hut’s same store sales dropped 3% in the latest quarterly report.  Meanwhile, Taco Bell is doing great, with same-store sales up 7%.  KFC is slowly turning around its battle against Chik-fil-A and Cane’s as well.  Its same-store sales were up 1%.  Shares of Yum! are up 6% so far this year. https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/04/food/pizza-hut-closures

Overall retail store closures are expected to be at their lowest level in three years in 2026.  Dollar General, Aldi and Tractor Supply top the list of retailers with the most planned new locations opening this year.  Developers are starting to see a demand for more new strip malls.  On the flip side, GameStop, Francesca’s and Walgreens lead the list of most planned closures this year.  The trends show department stores and legacy retailers continuing to shed locations, while discounters, warehouse clubs and off-price chains are adding locations. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/02/store-openings-and-closures-2026-dollar-general-aldi-gamestop.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Washington Post today announced it is cutting one third of its staff.  Layoffs mandated by owner Jeff Bezos will affect every corner of the newsroom.  But it will also narrow the Post’s focus.  The sports desk will close with some sports reporters staying on to write feature stories.  The Books section is gone as is the podcast “Post Reports”.  The international desk will shrink and the entire Middle East desk was let go.  The paper will now focus on politics and national stories.  Executive Editor Matt Murray called the move “a strategic reset” to enable the publication to compete in the era of artificial intelligence. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/04/nx-s1-5699328/washington-post-layoffs-jobs-bezos

China has become the first nation to require a car design change to make it easier to rescue occupants from a vehicle crash.  The rules which go into effect next year, require vehicle door handles to be manually operable both inside and outside.  It’s a response to futuristic designs first popularized by Tesla where door handles are hidden and electrically powered.  Car designers like them for both aerodynamic and aesthetic reasons.  But they can malfunction after a crash or battery failure.  This country’s National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration has an ongoing investigation into complaints about the safety of Tesla door handles on Model Y and Model 3.  Electric door handles on both have been linked to 15 fatalities. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/03/nx-s1-5698224/china-electric-car-door-handles
