LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An Aguanga man has been arrested for Monday’s fire in that community that claimed the life of one person.  48-year old Garrett Preston Young was taken into custody yesterday and is being held at French Valley jail in lieu of $1m bail.  He’ll have a court appearance tomorrow as the prime suspect in multiple fires set in the 45000 block of Highway 79.  Young was booked on multiple felony charges, including murder with malice, owning a homemade zip gun, and additional arson-related charges.  The identity of the victim has not been released. https://patch.com/california/temecula/arrest-homicide-arson-east-temecula-sheriffs-department

Oceanside police today announced the arrest of a suspect in last week’s arson fire at the Regal Oceanside Cinema on Mission Avenue.  41-year old Amber Iovino, who was arrested and confessed to the crime yesterday is reportedly still in jail in lieu of $150k bail.  The fire, which started in an exterior drain pipe did about $10k of damage to an interior storeroom. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/oceanside-police-woman-admits-setting-fire-at-movie-theater

A former Camp Pendleton Marine pleaded guilty Friday to his part in obtaining a fatal dose of fentanyl for a fellow Marine in 2020.  A U.S. District judge is scheduled to sentence 24-year old Anthony Ruben Whisenant to up to four years in federal prison for the use of a cell phone in the commission of a felony drug offense.  Whisenant had contacted an oxycodone dealer by phone based on a Snapchat post.  The victim, identified only as L.M. drove Whisenant and another Marine to the dealer, 28-year old Gustavo Jaciel Solis to collect the drug purchase, which turned out to contain fentanyl.  Solis pleaded guilty to multiple charges almost three years ago.  His sentencing is pending.  He faces up to life in prison.  Others charged in connection with L.M.’s death are facing anywhere from probation to three years in prison. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/02/04/former-camp-pendleton-marine-pleads-guilty-in-fentanyl-overdose-case/

New technology to ease congestion by controlling when cars enter the 15 Freeway in Temecula is under construction.  The estimated $33.5 million pilot project began several weeks ago and will use sensors and ramp meters to monitor and regulate traffic along an 8-mile stretch from the Riverside County line to the 15 and 215 split in Murrieta.  Crews will also be adding extra lanes to the northbound freeway on-ramps at Winchester Road, Rancho California Road and Temecula Parkway to help cars get onto the freeway more smoothly and prevent backups on local streets. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/02/05/construction-starts-on-smart-15-freeway-traffic-relief-project-in-temecula/

SPORTS

In the NFL – In yet another example of how the game of football is destroying the health of players, it was announced today by the Concussion League Foundation, that former Pro Bowl guard Conrad Dobler, once known as the NFL’s “dirtiest player” had Stage 3 chronic traumatic encephalopathy at the time of his death two years ago at age 73. The degenerative brain disease caused by repeated blows to the head can only be diagnosed after death.  About a dozen years earlier, Dobler had pledged to donate his brain upon his death to the BU CTE Center for research. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43704909/conrad-dobler-once-dubbed-nfl-dirtiest-player-had-cte

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained a half percent.  The S&P 500 was up two tenths.  The Nasdaq fell a tenth.  Gold gained $18 on the Comex, trading at $2,893.80 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $1.51 to $71.19 a barrel.

After sending shock waves through the retail world, the confusion mounted today as the U.S. Postal Service reversed yesterday’s suspension of shipping parcels from China and Hong Kong.  The ban may or may not have been in response to President Trump scrapping a retail exemption from the new 10% tariff on imports from China for packages valued at less than $800.  The White House had blamed the so-called “de minimis” exemption for allowing illegal drug shipments to enter the U.S. unscreened.  Duty-free de minimis shipments to the U.S. increased by one third last year to over 1.3b parcels.  Online retailers Temu and Shein account for about 30% of those shipments. For now, de minimis parcels which had previously been consolidated so customs could clear hundreds or thousands at a time will now each need individual clearance.  Retailers and intermediaries for shipments from China are waiting for guidance from Washington on what to do. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-postal-service-suspends-incoming-packages-china-hong-kong-2025-02-05/

Alphabet’s report of disappointing revenue from its cloud sector and large investments in AI caused the tech giant to be one of the biggest drags on today’s stock market. https://www.reuters.com/business/

Cloud computing in general is struggling. The pressure is on Amazon to deliver on lofty expectations for cloud computing in its fourth-quarter results tomorrow, after Microsoft and Google’s lackluster reports jolted investor faith in Big Tech’s billion-dollar investments in AI.  Shares of major tech companies surged in the past two years on the belief that massive datacenter needs for artificial-intelligence technologies would power investment for years.  But that was before Chinese startup DeepSeek said it had achieved AI breakthroughs at a fraction of the cost, causing the recent selloff in technology stocks that some industry watchers say was overdue. https://www.reuters.com/technology/amazons-cloud-business-faces-crucial-test-after-rivals-microsoft-google-stumble-2025-02-05/

Amazon is set to release its long-awaited – and delayed – Alexa generative artificial intelligence voice service.  They’ve scheduled a media event later this month to preview it.  Once released, it would mark the most significant upgrade to the product since its initial introduction accelerated a wave of digital assistants more than a decade ago. https://www.reuters.com/technology/amazon-set-release-long-delayed-alexa-generative-ai-revamp-2025-02-05/

Talks between Nissan and Honda to join forces as the world’s #3 automaker are rumored to be breaking down.  Growing differences are causing Nissan to step back.  Apparently, they don’t want to become a subsidiary of the much-larger and more successful Honda, which is valued at five times the capitalization of Nissan.  Nissan shares fell 5% on the news.  Honda’s gained 8% – a sign that Nissan has more to gain from the $60b deal than Honda.  https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/nissan-honda-may-call-off-merger-talks-asahi-says-2025-02-04/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Short video app TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance seems to be dragging its feet on its Congressionally-mandated sale as it waits for approval from the Chinese government.  Meanwhile, President Trump’s allies are racing to broker a deal to sell it to an American bidder.  The Washington Post reported today that China is likely to take a hard-line approach, preferring for TikTok’s U.S. operations to die rather than approving a sale, as it holds out for a “grand deal” with Trump’s administration including larger concessions on trade and tech policy. https://www.reuters.com/technology/tiktoks-chinese-owner-appears-be-slow-rolling-negotiations-sale-washington-post-2025-02-05/
