LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Two days ago, ABC News aired an interview with three of the youngest Turpin children, the Perris family that made national headlines ten years ago for child abuse and imprisonment.  After being taken away from their biological parents, the youngest ones were placed in yet another abusive household by Riverside County.  Details of what ABC said was an undisclosed settlement for that case have now been revealed.  Riverside County will pay $2.25m and the foster family agency ChildNet will pay $11.25m, with the $13.5m total to be split between the six out of 13 Turpin children who were placed with foster families. www.pe.com

Riverside jury selection could be complete today in the trial of 53-year old Santos Erasmo Garcia from Lake Elsinore, who’s charged with nearly two dozen felony counts, mostly involving sexual assault of three young girls between 2010 and 2017.  He fled to Guatemala when he found he was being investigated.  The youngest victim was age 5 when the alleged crimes began.  Working in cooperation with Guatemalan authorities, Garcia was arrested and extradited to the US in 2023. https://patch.com/california/lakeelsinore-wildomar/opening-statements-possible-thursday-trial-lake-elsinore-man

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks fell on all three major US exchanges.  The Dow was down 8 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was off by 9 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was down a full percent.  Gold took a dive as well, falling almost $60 to $4,890 an ounce on the Comex.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $1.52 to $63.62 a barrel.

Bitcoin has fallen below $70k for the first time in over a year.

The Labor Department’s January jobs report will be released February 11 – several days late due to the three-day government shutdown earlier this week.  It’s expected to show the economy is barely adding any new jobs.  That’s based on statistics released by Challenger, Gray & Christmas showing US employers cutting more than twice as many jobs last month as they did one year earlier.  It was the highest January job cuts since 2009.  Transportation and tech sectors were hit the hardest, mainly due to 16k job cuts announced by Amazon. https://www.challengergray.com/blog/challenger-report-january-job-cuts-surge-lowest-january-hiring-on-record/

Bob’s Discount Furniture held its Initial Public Offering today, opening at $17 a share – the low end of what was expected.  By afternoon, shares were still in that range, valuing the company at around $2.2b.  The Connecticut-based company has about 206 showrooms in 26 states and plans to grow that to over 500 by 2035.  Today’s IPO is expected to raise about $300m towards that end.  Bob’s strategy is to carry about one third fewer items than other value-oriented competitors, but price that value-focused furniture 10% below competitors and up to 25% lower than their listed prices.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/05/bobs-discount-furniture-bobs-to-start-trading-on-nyse-after-ipo.html

80 years ago, Minute Maid helped make orange juice a year-round staple at the breakfast table when it began shipping frozen concentrated orange juice all over the country.  Coca-Cola, the company that now owns Minute Maid said yesterday, it will discontinue making frozen orange juice, lemonade and limeade by April.  It says consumers prefer the ready-to-drink juice that it introduced to the refrigerated case instead of the freezer in 1973.  Minute Maid is also competing against energy drinks and protein smoothies, battling the stigma of added sugar, and struggling with skyrocketing fruit prices due to poor weather in Florida and Brazil.  A 12-ounce can of frozen OJ cost $4.82 in December.  That’s up 13% from a year ago.  Meanwhile, sales of frozen beverages are down 8% over that same time. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/minute-maid-frozen-oj-concentrate-production-ending/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

We lost a pair of music contemporaries this week.  Both of them were members of groups specializing in vocal harmonies on songs written by others, including Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson, Hoyt Axton, Neil Sedaka, John Phillips, Paul Williams and Randy Newman.

Chuck Negron was a singer-songwriter and one of three lead vocalists for Three Dog Night. Originally from New York City, he and his twin sister grew up in the Bronx where he sang in local doo-wop groups and played basketball pickup games and in high school.  He was recruited to play basketball at a small community college in Santa Maria, and later at Cal State Los Angeles.  Singer Danny Hutton invited Negron to join him and Cory Wells to found Three Dog Night, which became one of the most successful bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Hits featuring Negron singing lead include “One”, “Easy to Be Hard”, “Joy to the World”, “An Old Fashioned Love Song”, and “Pieces of April”.  He developed a heroin addiction in the early 1970s.  Drugs and ego clashes led Three Dog Night to disband in 1976.  After many tries at rehab, Negron kicked his addiction in 1991 and returned to singing as a solo.  His autobiography, “Three Dog Nightmare” was published in 1999.  Negron was married four times and had three daughters and a son.  He died of heart failure and COPD at his home in Studio City on Monday at the age of 83. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Negron

Lamonte McLemore was best known as a founding member of The 5th Dimension.  He grew up in St. Louis and worked as an aerial photographer upon joining the Navy straight out of high school.  He was the first African American to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals and did briefly play on a Dodgers minor league team after moving to LA.   McLemore and a partner founded Halmont Graphics in 1958.  He became the first African American photographer for Harper’s Bazaar magazine and shot the cover for Stevie Wonder’s first album.  He photographed for Jet and Ebony magazines for over 40 years.  It was on a shoot for the Miss Black Beauty Pageant that he met Marilyn McCoo and Florence LaRue, which eventually led to them forming a group along with Billy Davis and Ron Townson, a pair of McLemore’s friends from St. Louis in 1965.  Originally calling themselves The Versatiles, they changed to The 5th Dimension the following year at the insistence of Johnny Rivers, whose Soul City Records label had just signed them.  Between 1967 and 1973, The 5th Dimension had 20 Top 40 hits including two chart-toppers … “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” and “Wedding Bell Blues”.  McLemore wrote and published an autobiography in 2014.  He died Tuesday at his home in Las Vegas at the age of 90.  He is survived by his second wife, two children and three grandchildren.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamonte_McLemore
