LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

There was a fatal collision between two motorcycles on De Luz Road Saturday afternoon.  It happened at about 12:40p at the intersection with Dos Cameos.  The road was closed in both directions for most of the afternoon for investigation.  No word on the condition of the second rider and no other details released. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/02/05/news/fatal-motorcycle-collision-closes-de-luz-road-for-several-hours/81157.html

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a minivan in San Marcos Friday evening.  Deputies responded to the 1100 block of West Mission Road around 7:50p Friday.  First responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene about 20 minutes later.  The minivan driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.  It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/pedestrian-killed-by-minivan-in-san-marcos

A US Foods tractor-trailer rig caught fire on southbound I-15 just before Mission Road in Fallbrook last evening.  The trucks brakes overheated and caught fire around 7:50p.  The rearmost of two trailers was on fire when first responders arrived.  Crews quickly put out the flames and there was minimal traffic impact. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/02/05/news/overheated-brakes-spark-fire-on-commercial-truck-near-mission-road/81162.html

A man who arranged the fentanyl sale that led to a Carlsbad woman’s fatal overdose has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.  31-year old Cameron William Fulston pleaded guilty to coordinating the deal that led to 25-year old Danielle Good’s death in September of 2023.  Fulston’s co-defendant, Bryan Kim Bullard was with Good when she overdosed.  He messaged Fulston that he needed Narcan.  But neither contacted emergency responders until an hour later and neither were there when first responders arrived.  Good slipped into a coma and died five days later.  Bullard was arrested two months after that and recently pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/man-sentenced-to-12-years-for-fentanyl-sale-that-caused-carlsbad-womans-death

An Escondido man will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor 73 years after his heroic actions in the Korean War.  100-year old Royce Williams faced seven Soviet pilots in 1952.  The aerial dogfight lasted about 35 minutes and remained classified for decades, preventing any honors at the time.   The details were declassified in 2002.  A date for medal presentation ceremonies has yet to be announced. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/escondido-war-hero-to-get-medal-of-honor-73-years-after-classified-dogfight

SPORTS

At the Winter Olympics – Friday’s opening ceremonies were unique in that the march of athletes was held simultaneously in four locations throughout Northern Italy so that all competitors could take part, not just the bulk of them in Milan.

So far, the US has two gold medals – one for Alpine skiing one for figure skating, and are 7th overall.  Italy is currently leading the medal count with 9 – one of them gold.  Norway is second with 6 including 3 golds.  Japan has five with one gold.  Switzerland has four – three of them gold. https://www.espn.com/olympics/winter/2026/medals

41-year old Lindsey Vonn’s attempt at a downhill medal less than a week after an ACL injury ended in disaster yesterday.  She crashed early into her first run, breaking her left leg.  She was airlifted off the course and is recuperating after surgery at a hospital in Treviso.  Her father, a former ski racer himself said Linsey’s racing career is over if he has any influence over her decision.  https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/47879004/lindsey-vonn-dad-says-olympic-crash-marks-end-career

In the NFL – Super Bowl 60 will go down as the day of the Dark Side.  That’s the nickname for the Seattle defense, who completely shut down New England for three quarters and had a record six sacks of quarterback Drake Maye, who fumbled twice.  New England’s defense were no slouches either, holding Seattle to nothing but field goals for the first three quarters.  All four of the game’s touchdowns – two for each team – came in the fourth quarter – by far the most exciting part of the game to watch, except that it was far too late for the Patriots to overcome the Seahawks’ five field goals.  Final score 29-13 with Seattle earning its second championship title.  Seattle’s Sam Darnold threw for 202 yards.  New England’s Drake Maye threw for 295, but had two costly interceptions.  Kenneth Walker ran for 135 yards, earning him the game MVP award.  He’s the first running back to do that in 28 years.  The Patriots’ star player was cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who prevented two Seattle touchdowns in the second quarter. https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-seahawks-patriots-24ad67503a342a7e24348e66986250ab

From the NFL police blotter, Atlanta Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. allegedly crashed his vehicle multiple times into one being driven by WNBA player Rickea Jackson and then struck a police officer while evading arrest.  He was taken into custody in Miami-Dade County Saturday on five felony charges and was released on bond Sunday.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47876603/falcons-pearce-allegedly-crashed-suv-jackson-car

In the NBA – The Clippers beat Sacramento on Saturday, then won again yesterday at Minnesota 115-96.  The Lakers beat Golden State Saturday 105-99.  Yesterday’s other winners were Boston, Washington and Toronto.

In college basketball – Key weekend losses by UConn, Illinois and Duke led to a reshuffle at the top of the AP Top 25.  Arizona is the new #1 team and the only one that is still undefeated, followed by Michigan, Houston, Duke, Iowa State and UConn.  Illinois fell three places to #8.  Gonzaga dropped six places to #12. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings

In women’s NCAA – Uconn remains in first place with the only perfect record at 25 and 0, followed by UCLA, South Carolina, and Texas – a lineup that hasn’t changed in three weeks.  Vanderbilt moved up two places to #5.  https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/rankings

In the NHL – The league is on break for the Winter Olympics.  A number of NHL players are playing on their home country’s team for the first time in several Winter games.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls play the Condors at Bakersfield this Friday and host them on Saturday.

In Major League Baseball – Pitchers and catchers begin reporting to training camp tomorrow.  For the Padres and 14 other teams including the Angels, the first day will be Wednesday.  The Dodgers report on Friday. The first games of Spring Training are 11 days away.

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals lost 12-9 to Saskatchewan Saturday at Pechanga Arena.  Their next game is this Saturday at Oshawa.

In golf – At the Phoenix Open, Chris Gotterup beat Hideki Matsuyama in the first hole of sudden death after both finished with four-round totals of 16 under par 268.  https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

On this day in music history – February 9,

  • 1959, Mercury Records released “White Lightning” by George Jones. In his 1997 autobiography, Jones says the recording process for that song was difficult.  It was also authentic … because he was drunk.  It took about 80 takes just to get the vocals right.  White Lightning became his first #1 hit.

  • In 1964, The Beatles made their U.S. live television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.  They performed five songs including their current #1 hit, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”.  The show got over 50k requests for the 728 seats in the theater.  Three fourths of everyone watching television that night (about 73m people) were watching the show – the largest-ever live television audience up to that time.
  • In 1968, Hal Cone, former manager of The Monkees and Head of Jones Records was found guilty of theft, forgery, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.
  • In 1981, rock and roll pioneer Bill Haley was found dead of a heart attack at his home in Harlingen, Texas.  He was 55.  He and his group, The Comets had hits in the 1950s including “Rock Around the Clock”, “Shake, Rattle and Roll”, and “See You Later Alligator.”

  • In 2010, The White Stripes accused the US Air Force of using its song “Fell In Love With a Girl” in a TV ad without permission.  On their website, Jack and Meg White said they took “strong insult and objection, with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support.”
  • In 2015, during a speech at a charity gala honoring his career, Bob Dylan took on his critics, asking why they complain he “can’t sing” and sounds “like a frog” but don’t “say that about Tom Waits … or Leonard Cohen?”
