LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A judge has struck down California’s ban on masks for federal agents, but ruled that it can require them to display identification.  The Trump administration had asked the court to block both laws.  www.NYTimes.com

One person was transported to a hospital after a collision last evening on Rice Canyon Road.  It happened around 5:15p between two vehicles that were disabled as a result.  The cause of the crash and extent of injuries was unclear. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/02/05/news/one-transported-following-collision-on-rice-canyon-road/81163.html

Thanks to just-approved federal funding, French Valley Airport will be getting a new $5m control tower.  It’ll be a “contract” tower.  That’s where the Federal Aviation Administration contracts with private companies to provide air traffic services rather than use its own federal employees.  The 448 square foot octagonal tower will rise 93 feet above ground level.  It’ll have an emergency generator, security fencing, ten employee parking spaces and space for an on-site fuel truck.  Construction is expected to begin this year and take about six months to complete.  French Valley Airport currently handles an average of 290 flight operations per day on its single 6k foot-long runway.  The same federal funding bill will also provide $8m to improve water quality in Lake Elsinore as well as over $50m additional for other Riverside County projects.  https://patch.com/california/murrieta/new-control-tower-french-valley-airport-gets-big-funding-boost

Oceanside’s city council voted last week to shift its annual beach sand dredging project from the spring to the fall, to more effectively retain sand on its beaches.  Every year, the US Army Corps of Engineers digs up sand that accumulated at the entrance to Oceanside Harbor and pumps it south to the city’s beaches.  About 200k to 300k cubic yards of sand gets moved each year.  It won’t cost any more to do it in the fall, and experience shows that there could be benefits including better distribution of the dredged sand and easier setup of piping.  https://thecoastnews.com/oceanside-to-test-out-fall-schedule-for-sand-dredging/

The first measles case in San Bernardino County in three years was reported over the weekend, as was this year’s first for Riverside County and another Orange County case apparently contracted from visiting Disneyland.  The San Bernardino case was traced to an unvaccinated minor from out of state who’d visited the Walmart on Mountain Avenue in Ontario January 29.  Because measles is highly infectious, health officials trace the steps of those infected and reach out to known contacts and anyone who may have been at public locations the same time as an infected individual.  So far this year, there have been 733 confirmed cases of measles across 20 states in the US. https://patch.com/california/lakeelsinore-wildomar/walmart-shoppers-ie-disneyland-visitors-possibly-exposed-measles

North County Sheriff’s deputies seized several illegal e-motorcycles in Encinitas over the past week.  E-motorcycles are different from e-bikes and must be licensed to operate on public roads.  https://www.newsbreak.com/california-daily-brief-373152966/4485395754894-illegal-e-motorcycles-seized-in-encinitas

It’ll be cool and windy today in Pala followed by a couple of rainy days.  Not quite cold enough for snow in the local mountains this time.  Maybe from another storm coming next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

At the Winter Olympics – Norway and Italy now each have 11 medals. Norway has 6 gold.  Italy has 2.  The United States and Japan are tied for third in overall medals at 7 each.  Both have two gold.  Coverage continues tonight on NBC. https://www.espn.com/olympics/winter/2026/medals

US figure skater Ilia Malinin, sometimes referred to as the “Quad God” for his four-rotation jumps made history Sunday night as the first Olympic skater to legally complete a backflip in competition.  It’s known as “the Bonaly flip”, because France’s Surya Bonaly did what was then a banned move at the 1998 Nagano Games.  It was the final performance of her career, so she did it, knowing she’d be docked points for the move which had actually first been done by Terry Kubicka in 1976.  After that, back flips in competition had been banned by the International Skating Union as being too dangerous.  That ban was lifted two years ago. https://apnews.com/article/milan-skating-malinin-first-legal-backflip-bonaly-f54f5173e1d5aa36bc5810e554d1002d

In the NBA – The Lakers lost to the visiting Thunder 119-110.  Other winners were Brooklyn, Utah, Orlando, Minnesota, New Orleans, Cleveland, Golden State, Portland and Detroit.

A fight in the third quarter of that Pistons-Hornets game led to the ejection of four players.  Charlotte’s Moussa Diabate and Miles Bridges were thrown out, along with Detroit’s Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart.  Duren was driving for the basket when he was fouled by Diabate.  Duren turned to get face-to-face with Diabate and the two appeared to butt heads.  Duren then hit Diabate with his open right hand, starting a fight involving both teams and requiring a brief police presence on the court.  The four were ejected per the rules for fighting after a dead ball.  Hornets coach Charles Lee was ejected in the fourth quarter after being restrained from going after an official while arguing a call.  A win by Charlotte would have tied the franchise record for consecutive wins at 10.   https://apnews.com/article/pistons-hornets-fight-6a852a8902788c52ac2ac4a8d5ac9344

San Francisco defensive lineman Keion White was the victim of a shooting in that city early yesterday morning.  He was shot in the ankle at a business on Mission Street just after 4a.  He underwent surgery yesterday afternoon.  The injury is not considered career-threatening.  No one’s been arrested.  The incident is still under investigation. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47882230/49ers-keion-white-shot-ankle-san-francisco-hours-super-bowl-lx

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained almost a half percent.  The S&P 500 was up a small fraction.  And the Nasdaq fell a tenth.  Gold gave back some of yesterday’s big gains, falling more than $34 on the Comex to $5,044.60 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 41 cents to $63.95 a barrel.

The year’s first jobs report from the Labor Department comes out tomorrow.  Market watchers are expecting the worst.

The Commerce Department today published numbers showing consumers really held back in December.  Purchases were expected to increase with holiday shopping, but instead, remained at about the same level as November.  The retail sales figures, which were not adjusted for inflation, showed declines in the home furnishing, electronics and appliances sectors.  Building materials and garden stores showed solid increases.  https://apnews.com/article/retail-sales-holiday-economy-consumer-31b321fce5b28dfcedfa4b7894b7ff57

Paramount is sweetening the terms of its hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. to prevent the agreed-to merger of portions of Warner Bros. with Netflix.  While Paramount’s per-share offer remains at $30, all-cash, it will also pay a “ticking fee” if there are any regulatory delays, plus the $2.8b termination fee Warner Bros. Discovery would owe Netflix if that deal terminated, plus it will eliminate $1.5b in refinancing debt WBD will face under Netflix. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/10/paramount-sweetens-wbd-bid-stops-short-of-raising-value-.html

The Washington Post’s publisher and chief executive, Will Lewis resigned over the weekend, just days after the newspaper announced massive layoffs and closed a number of departments.  He’d only been in charge of the paper for five months and apparently had no role in the reorganization. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/07/nx-s1-5705413/washington-post-ceo-resigns-will-lewis

The operator of 180 Eddie Bauer stores in the US and Canada has filed for bankruptcy protection.  It’s the third BK for the company in the past 20 years.  Eddie Bauer LLC told the court yesterday that it had secured lenders for its reorganization and will remain open as it winds down certain locations.  If it can’t sell off those stores, the whole chain may have to close.  The online division of Eddie Bauer and stores licensed to other operators in other countries are not part of yesterday’s filing.  The brand was started by its namesake as a single-location sports outfitter in Seattle in 1920.  https://apnews.com/article/eddie-bauer-bankruptcy-retail-1f4168dca0060353b3766f0924d9c7da

CVS Health beat quarterly estimates, indicating turnaround measures under CEO David Joyner are working a little over one year into his tenure.  CVS announced last week that its more than 9k pharmacies are accepting discount cards from the newly-launched TrumpRX.  Those prices negotiated by the administration with drug makers become a starting point for CVS’s pharmacy benefit manager, Caremark to negotiate even lower costs for customers.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/10/cvs-health-earnings-q4-2025.html

A recently-built 18-unit apartment building with ground floor retail space on South Coast Highway in Oceanside just sold for $14.425m to the Kronemyer Family Trust.  The Flats was completed about 18 months ago, has high-end fixtures and architectural details in the apartments and 2,785 square feet of retail space at 1931 South Coast Highway. https://www.connectcre.com/stories/473392-2/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

McDonald’s is offering free caviar for Valentine’s Day … or was.  The fast food chain launched an online-only McNugget Caviar promotion at 8a this morning.  The limited supply was exhausted almost immediately and apparently crashed the website.  A “sold-out” graphic appeared ten minutes later.  The dish was popularized by a New York restaurant selling Korean-inspired fried chicken nuggets topped with caviar, crème fraiche and chives at the New York Open tennis championships for $100 per half dozen.  The Mickey D’s McNugget Caviar kit included a 1-ounce tin of caviar – which, for the uninitiated is salt-cured unfertilized fish eggs – usually sturgeon, a $25 McDonald’s gift certificate with which to buy your own McNuggets, crème fraiche and a Mother of Pearl caviar spoon.  The kits were free, so naturally, they disappeared quickly – some of them probably to people who don’t even like caviar.  It is an acquired taste. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2026/02/10/mcdonalds-mcnugget-caviar-kits-sold-out/88605514007/

On this day in music history – February 10,

  • In 1942, ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’ by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra became the first recording to be awarded a Gold record … sort of.  It was actually just a master copy of the disc sprayed with gold lacquer by RCA as a publicity stunt.  But the idea was born with the actual award recognized today as a Gold Record initiated 16 years later when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) borrowed the idea and trademarked the Gold Record. The first RIAA Gold single was awarded to Perry Como in 1958 for ‘Catch A Falling Star’ and the first Gold album was given to Gordon McRae for the soundtrack to ‘Oklahoma’.
  • In 1967, The Beatles recorded the orchestral build-up for the middle and end of “A Day in the Life”.  At the Beatles’ request, the orchestra members arrived in full evening dress along with novelty items.  One violinist wore a red clown’s nose, while another, a fake gorilla’s paw on his bow hand.  Others were wearing funny hats and other assorted novelties.  The recording was filmed for a possible ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ television special which was ultimately abandoned.  Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mike Nesmith from The Monkees, and Donovan also attended the session.
  • In 1971, American singer-songwriter Carole King released her second studio album. “Tapestry” became one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide. The double-sided single from the album ‘It’s Too Late’/’I Feel the Earth Move’ spent five weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The cover photograph was taken at King’s Laurel Canyon home. It shows her sitting in a window frame, holding a tapestry she hand-stitched herself, with her cat, Telemachus at her feet.
  • In 1974, Record producer Phil Spector was injured in a car crash. He needed extensive plastic surgery that dramatically altered his looks. Details of how the accident happened were kept secret.
  • In 1977, The Clash began recording their debut album at CBS studios in London.  Recorded over three weekend sessions in February of that year, the completed album was delivered to the label at the beginning of March at a cost of just $7,500.
  • In 1979, late to the disco fad, Rod Stewart started a four week stay at No.1 on the singles chart with ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’, his third US No.1.  He also started three weeks at No.1 on the album chart with “Blondes Have More Fun”.
  • In 1990, Paula Abdul started the first of three weeks at No.1 on the singles chart with ‘Opposites Attract’, her fourth chart topper.
  • In 1993, On a special edition of the Oprah Winfrey show, Michael Jackson gave his first TV interview in 14 years, live from his Neverland Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley.
  • In 2004, Diana Ross was sentenced to two days in jail after pleading ‘no contest’ to drunk driving charges. She was allowed to enter her plea over the telephone from New York.  Her lawyer said the singer would serve her term at a prison near her Los Angeles home. Ross was arrested in December 2002 after tests indicated she was twice over the DUI limit.
  • In 2008, Amy Winehouse won five prizes at that year’s Grammy Awards, including song of the year and record of the year, both for her single ‘Rehab’, and best new artist. The UK singer was not at the Los Angeles ceremony to collect them due to visa problems. Instead, she made an acceptance speech by satellite, paying tribute to her husband, “my Blake incarcerated”, who was in custody awaiting trial on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and grievous bodily harm. Kanye West scooped four Grammy Awards, while Bruce Springsteen won

Born on this day …

  • In 1929, Jerry Goldsmith who created music scores for classic movies and TV shows including “Star Trek”, “Planet of the Apes”, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and “Dr. Kildare”.
  • In 1937, Don Wilson from The Ventures, and singer-songwriter Roberta Flack
  • In 1949, drummer with Elton John’s band, Nigel Olsson.
