There were no injuries. It was just one of many accidents on this morning’s rain-slick roadways.   https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4488021061333-semi-tractor-trailer-jackknifes-on-i-5-in-oceanside-blocking-lanes

At last night’s Temecula School Board meeting, directors voted unanimously to issue layoff notices to 20 district employees.  Neither board members, nor district administrators gave reasons for the tentative cuts. https://www.fcmat.org/

The Escondido City Council voted 4-1 to approve a development of 128 apartments in a five-story building at 137 West Valley Parkway on what is currently a 115-space city-owned parking lot across from City Hall.  Even though it’s less than a half mile from the North County transit center and doesn’t have to have any parking spaces, the new development will have 113 spaces.  Some adjacent Maple Plaza features will be moved or adjusted by several feet.  It will not have any retail space.  Before the vote, nearby businesses complained about the loss of downtown parking lot. https://www.times-advocate.com/articles/council-approves-project-for-city-parking-lot/

SPORTS

At the Winter Olympics – Norway leads the medal count with 13 including 7 gold, Italy is second with 12 including 3 gold, the US is third with 11 including 4 gold.  Americans Evan Bates and Madison Chock won gold in ice dance.  Elizabeth Lemley won the women’s moguls with teammate Laelin Kauf winning the silver.  USA’s Jordan Stotz won the Men’s 1000-meter speed skate.  The men’s ice hockey tournament begins for Team USA tomorrow against Latvia.  They’ll play Denmark on Saturday. https://www.espn.com/olympics/winter/2026/schedule/_/discipline/29

Olympic medalists are finding that their awards need to be handled with care after several fell off their ribbons on opening weekend.  Breezy Johnson, who won the alpine ski women’s downhill Sunday was jumping excitedly on the podium when hers came apart.  It was replaced on Tuesday, but still needs to be engraved.  Organizers of the Milan Games are working on a solution.  Two years ago, at the Paris Summer Games, some medals had to be replaced when recipients complained they were starting to tarnish or corrode. https://www.kpbs.org/news/quality-of-life/2026/02/10/dont-jump-in-them-olympic-athletes-medals-break-during-celebrations

Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn had a third successful surgery to repair damage from a broken tibia suffered in Sunday’s crash 13 seconds into her run.  Nine day’s earlier, she’d ruptured the ACL in that same leg. https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/47899225/lindsey-vonn-undergoes-third-leg-surgery-olympic-crash

In the NBA – The Clippers lost to the Rockets in Houston 102-95.  The visiting Spurs routed the Lakers 136-108.  Other winners were Indiana and Phoenix.

In the minors – The San Diego Clippers play at South Bay tonight.

In college basketball – Lots of upsets.  Unranked TCU knocked off #5 Iowa State 62-55.  #13 Purdue surprised #7 Nebraska 80-77 in overtime.  Unranked Wisconsin beat #8 Illinois 92-90, also in OT.  Unranked Miami beat #11 North Carolina 75-66.

In the NHL – The regular season is on hold until after the Winter Olympics.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls play the Condors at Bakersfield this Friday and host them on Saturday.

In the NFL – Ratings are in for Super Bowl 60 and the Bad Bunny halftime show.  Both did well, but fell short of overall record viewership.  The game’s 124.9m average viewers on NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, NBC Sports Digital and NFL+ fell 2.8m short of last year’s Philadelphia-Kansas City game on Fox.  But it was the most-watched program in NBC history as the network celebrates its 100th anniversary.  Part of the problem with this year’s ratings could be the game.  With the action being mostly defensive and the outcome fairly assured early in the game, the audience peaked at a record 137.8m viewers during the second quarter.  It was the second straight year the game was decided in the first half after three previous Super Bowls that came down to the final minute.  Telemundo averaged 3.3m viewers for the Spanish broadcast of the game and 4.8m for the halftime show, which was almost entirely in Spanish anyway.  Both set records for this, the 12th year of Spanish broadcast of the Super Bowl.  On NBC, Bad Bunny’s halftime show averaged 128.2m viewers, making it the fourth most-watched halftime behind the record set by Kendrick Lamar last year, Michael Jackson in 1993, and Usher in 2024.  Meanwhile, Turning Point USA’s alternative halftime show featuring Kid Rock peaked at 5m viewers on YouTube.  As of Tuesday night, it had 21.2m views, compared with Bad Bunny’s 61.3m views of its recording.  Social media consumption of the Bad Bunny halftime set a record at 4m in the first 24 hours – more than double that of last year’s Kendrick Lamar show.  https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-ratings-nbc-nielsen-seahawks-patriots-bad-bunny-1fff75414ea28b300133372984994ca0

Next year’s Super Bowl, which will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will move to ABC and for the first time, ESPN, who plan on making it a year-round experience instead of just one day.  It’ll involve Disney characters, since both networks are owned by Disney, a series called “I Scored a Touchdown” featuring 61 players who’ve scored in the biggest game of the year, a podcast called “The Biggest Game” which premiered this week and will have new episodes weekly approaching the April NFL draft. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47897537/espn-year-super-bowl-year-round-experience

In Major League Baseball – Pitchers and catchers for the Padres and 14 other teams including the Angels, begin arriving at training camp today.  The Dodgers report on Friday. The first games of Spring Training are just nine days away.

In soccer – The San Diego Sockers next game is Saturday at Kansas City.

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is this Saturday at Oshawa.

Local High School Sports –

Bonsall – no scheduled games today

Great Oak – girls’ beach volleyball at a tournament at Pearce Sports Center all day; boys’ basketball in the CIF playoffs at Rancho Verde at 7p

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed again today.  The Dow fell a small fraction.  The S&P 500 was up two tenths of a percent.  And the Nasdaq was flat.  Comex gold shot up almost $90 to $5,118.70 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained 88 cents to $64.84 a barrel.

Today’s jobs report from the Labor Department was stronger than expected.  US employers added 130k jobs last month – about twice as many as expected.  The unemployment rate fell to 4.3%.  Hourly wages increased a healthy 0.4% from December to January.  Today’s report also included major revisions that reduced the number of jobs created last year to just 181k – just one third the previously reported 584k and the weakest annual number since the first year of the pandemic. https://apnews.com/article/jobs-economy-unemployment-labor-c760d3f86988833bc9ccb3936d44d61b

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicts debt and federal deficits will worsen over the next ten years, driven by increased spending on Social Security, Medicare and debt service.  The outlook is somewhat worse than last year’s report, due in part to the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, higher tariffs and the cost of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration, including the deportation of millions of immigrants from the US.  As a result, the projected 2026 federal deficit is about $100b more than a year ago and total deficits for the next decade are $1.4 trillion larger.  The CBO noted that higher tariffs partially offset some of the increases by raising federal revenue by $3 trillion, but at the cost of higher inflation. https://apnews.com/article/trump-cbo-budget-outlook-deficits-inflation-debt-45a61cb88eb6083a6e18389d19320c8a

Kraft Heinz said today it is pausing plans to split into two companies first announced in September.  The split would have reversed years of mergers that created one of the world’s biggest food manufacturing companies.  One of the new divisions would have contained the stronger brands including Heinz, Philadelphia, and Kraft Mac & Cheese.  The other division would have included slower-selling brands like Maxwell House, Oscar Mayer, Kraft singles and Lunchables.  Investors have been concerned that the division of weaker brands which might fail on its own.  The company now says it will abandon plans for the split and invest $600m in marketing, sales and product development.  Kraft Heinz revenue has fallen every year since 2020, which it received a pandemic-related bump in sales. https://apnews.com/article/kraft-heinz-split-paused-earnings-d5c67a714c60f03d94f00b804faec292

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Yesterday’s sudden and surprising closure by the FAA of all airspace over El Paso, the country’s 23rd largest city was apparently the result of the Pentagon’s plans to test a laser to shoot down drones used by Mexican drug cartels.  Although the Pentagon was set to meet with the Federal Aviation Administration later this month to discuss the issue, the Pentagon wanted to push ahead with the tests, prompting the FAA to close down El Paso airspace, according to anonymous sources.  The closure was lifted just as abruptly late last night.  No world on whether the tests actually took place.  Rep. Veronica Escobar, whose district includes El Paso says the FAA owes the community and the country an explanation because information coming from the federal government isn’t adding up. https://apnews.com/article/faa-el-paso-texas-air-space-closed-1f774bdfd46f5986ff0e7003df709caa

Like all new technology, AI is having its growing pains.  In the medical field, people are starting to use chatbots to diagnose their own maladies, just as they’ve been Googling online diagnostics for years.  A study published this week says chatbots are no better than Google at pinpointing what ails you.  They can give you misinformation and even change their diagnosis if you re-ask a question, stating the symptoms with slightly different wording.  According to a New York Times health reporter, none of the chatbots evaluated in the study is ready to be used for actual patient care.  Yet one in six people regularly use them for health information with both Amazon and OpenAI unveiling products specifically designed for that purpose.  Doctors use them for things like notes on patient visits and practicing conversations with patients.  In fact, that’s the story line in the current season of “The Pitt” on HBO Max.  In some areas, AI can do better than doctors.  It’s better at reading electrocardiograms, where it finds patterns in the data that doctors miss.  But it’s risky for a patient to consult with a chatbot, especially for a psychological diagnosis, with there being a chance it will make things worse.  The bottom line seems to be that AI, like airplanes and bulldozers, works better in the hands of experienced operators. www.nytimes.com

On this day in music history – February 11,

  • 1963, The Beatles recorded ten new songs for their first album plus four other tracks which would become their next two singles all in less than ten hours.  John Lennon’s screaming vocal on “Twist and Shout” was done in one take – which was about all the voice he had left after 9 ½ hours.
  • Exactly one year later in 1964, the Beatles made their U.S. live concert debut at the Washington Coliseum.  350 police were needed to keep the 8k screaming fans under control.  Concerts in sporting venues were something new.  The sound was terrible, but the screaming drowned it out anyway.  The group, not stage hands, stopped three times to rotate Ringo’s drum set and reposition their own microphones to face a different part of the audience.
  • In 1967, The Monkees set a new record for fastest rising album when their second one, “More of the Monkees” jumped from #122 to #1 in a single week on the Billboard Hot 200 and stayed at #1 for 18 weeks.
  • In 1972, Led Zeppelin scored their third Top 20 hit with “Black Dog/Misty Mountain Hop”.  The title is a reference to a black Labrador that wandered around the studios during recording sessions.  Robert Plant nailed the vocal in two takes.
  • In 1989, Paula Abdul started the first of three weeks at #1 with her single, “Straight Up”.
  • In 1992, Motley Crue fired lead singer Vince Neil when he claimed he had lost his passion for the band and was now more interested in racing cars.
  • In 1998, Bernie Taupin’s hand-written lyrics to “Candle in the Wind” were auctioned at Christie’s in LA for about a half million dollars.
  • In 2008, Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills appeared in London court to reach a financial settlement in their divorce.  The couple, who had a four-year old daughter together had announced the end of their four-year marriage in 2006.
  • In 2009, Estelle Bennett of The Ronettes died at her home in New Jersey at the age of 67.
  • In 2012, Whitney Houston was found submerged in the bathtub in suite 434 of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  Paramedics arrived at 3:30p.  She was pronounced dead at 3:55p.  The coroner ruled it an “accidental drowning”.
