A 36-year old Oceanside man who was a teenager when he fatally shot Oceanside PD officer Dan Bessant in 2006 was resentenced yesterday to life in prison without parole, though it won’t make much actual difference. State law has changed under Proposition 57 since Meki Gaono was first sentenced in 2009. Under the new law, the then 17-year old should have been tried as an adult. Young offenders serving life sentences must now be given parole hearings after 25 years in prison. Gaono will be eligible in seven years. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/02/11/man-who-gunned-down-oceanside-police-officer-in-2006-resentenced-after-change-in-law/
The Oceanside Planning Commission on Monday agreed to a compromise to get a warehouse opposed by nearby residents for the past two years built near Oceanside Airport. The half-million square foot facility will be built on 32 acres on Eddie Jones Way north of Highway 76 between the airport and the San Luis Rey River. Most of the opponents live north of the river. The number of loading docks at the project will be lowered from 56 to 34. Just last summer, developer RPG had requested as many as 112 truck docks. Another development of restaurants, shops, a hotel and up to 700 homes nearby known as Ocean Kamp was approved in 2022. Both projects will have a significant impact on traffic in the area. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/02/11/compromise-wins-approval-for-long-opposed-oceanside-warehouse/

Residents in flood prone areas are advised to prepare with sand bags. Check with Pala Fire Department and local fire stations in Pala Mesa, Fallbrook and Valley Center.
The predicted big storm has arrived. We can expect rain for the next three days and a flood watch at the peak of the storm tomorrow. Pala could get a total of up to three inches of rain. Over seven inches is possible in the local mountains where it’ll be too warm for snow. The snow level is currently 5,500 feet, rising to 8k feet by Thursday. That’ll make local flooding even more likely. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Elon Musk is leading a group of investors in a hostile takeover bid for OpenAI, which is currently organized as a non-profit run by Musk nemesis, Sam Altman. OpenAI makes ChatGPT and is considered a leader in artificial intelligence research. Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, but the Tesla CEO and Trump administration insider left the company in 2019. Altman then launched a for-profit branch, allowing it to raise money for large investors like Microsoft. In multiple lawsuits since then, Musk has accused OpenAI of betraying its non-profit roots. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/yourmoney/consumer/article-14382297/Elon-Musk-makes-audacious-100-billion-bid-company-repeatedly-slates.html

Most revenue for road repairs comes from taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel. Some Republican senators are now calling for a $1k tax on new EVs to pay for their share of roadwork. Thirty states, including California already put a special annual charge on EVs to make up for lost gas tax revenue. In California, there’s a $108 per year charge that gets added to registration fees on EVs, model year 2020 or newer. According to Cal Trans, that’s expected to add $80m to the road funding budget. In some states, the fee is as high as $200. Anything higher risks alienating some buyers who might be considering purchasing electric for the first time. The most controversial idea for road funding is a road fee based on total miles traveled. It would use GPS information to track a vehicle’s mileage and assess fees accordingly. Problems with that include privacy concerns about the government tracking an individual’s movements, and how to calculate travel on private rural roads not funded by state agencies. But legislators agree that something has to be done to address the roadwork revenue shortfall as taxes tied to fuel purchases decline with gas or diesel-powered vehicles becoming more and more fuel efficient. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-01-12/will-growth-in-electric-cars-degrade-california-roads#:~:text=In%20California%2C%20EV%20owners%20with,the%20California%20Department%20of%20Transportation. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/republican-senators-call-1000-tax-new-ev-sales-pay-road-repairs-2025-02-12/
