Carlsbad’s nightlife areas got a heavy law-enforcement presence this week as a late-night targeted enforcement sweep resulted in the arrests of 11 people. The operation zeroed in on alcohol- and drug-related problems in busy bar areas, with officers working to head off fights, vandalism and other late-night trouble before it escalated. Patrol units joined Carlsbad PD’s vice and narcotics detectives, along with partnered sheriff’s task forces, to carry out the detail. Most of the arrests were for DUI. https://hoodline.com/2026/02/late-night-carlsbad-bar-sweep-hauls-in-11-as-cops-blitz-nightlife-hot-spots/?utm=newsbreak

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down sharply. The Dow was off by 1.3%. The S&P 500 fell 1 ¼% and is on track to turn negative for the year so far. The Nasdaq was down 1 2/3%. Gold plunged $146 on the Comex, trading at $4,959.10 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures dropped $1.94, or 3% to $62.70 a barrel.
The Labor Department reported today that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week by about 2% to 227k. Weekly layoff numbers have remained in a historically low range for the past several years. https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-0dc56ca15d52e7c26b0f64ec96306d4e
McDonald’s reports that its recent focus on value menu items is paying off. The chain cut prices on some combo meals in September. Previously, it had created its McValue menu and brought back the popular Snack Wraps at $2.99, which helped its value image. CEO Chris Kempczingski says the changes helped gain back market share among consumers with incomes of $45k or less, who had been drifting away from the brand. Same stores sales have now been reported as up 5.7% in the final quarter of 2025. Earnings and revenue for the quarter both beat Wall Street expectations. https://apnews.com/article/mcdonalds-value-earnings-revenue-sales-a3ee1c28f1380300abe057bddc77fe54
The parent company of Burger King and Popeye’s reported equally good earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter today. Same store sales – particularly those outside of the US and Canada did very well – up 6.1%. But Restaurant Brands International said progress on remodeling US Burger King locations slowed last year due to higher costs. Therefore, it’s unlikely the chain will meet its goal of remodeling 85% of them by 2028. That caused shares to fall 6% in afternoon trading. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/12/restaurant-brands-international-qsr-q4-2025-earnings.html
Sprit Airlines has recalled 500 flight attendants from furlough even as it sold off another 20 of its Airbus planes under bankruptcy reorganization. Most of them were not in service. That brings Spirit’s fleet down to 94 aircraft. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/12/spirit-airlines-sells-planes-flight-attendants.html
After ticking up slightly for the past three weeks, US mortgage rates are back down to just above 6% for the average 30-year loan as we approach the spring buying season. A year ago, that average rate was 0.8% higher. It’s still not enough to drag home sales out of the deep rut they’ve been in for several years. January sales were down 8.4% from December with the median price up almost a full percent over the past year. Higher prices have been brought on by a shortage of homes, both new and resale, as well as high rates keeping first-time buyers out of the market. https://apnews.com/article/mortgage-rates-housing-interest-financing-home-8078c72e225e45b9298e0bf3e0d2236f https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/12/january-homes-sales.html

He’d been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023, which he made public in November of 2024 in an effort to benefit efforts at diagnosis and treatment for others. Social media posts have been coming in from co-stars and friends including Katie Holmes, Ashton Kutcher, Krysten Ritter and Alfonso Ribeiro. A GoFundMe page set up to help the family has raised more than $1.3m as of this morning, including a $25k donation from Guardant Health. The biotech company posted on X that Van Der Beek was their first brand ambassador. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly and their six children. Actor Bud Cort died yesterday at the age of 77. Born Walter Edward Cox, he changed to a stage name to avoid confusion with popular 1960s actor Wally Cox. Young Walter began taking acting classes at age 14. After being rejected for acting classes at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, he enrolled instead as a scenic art major. He was discovered in his early 20s by director Robert Altman who cast Cort in two of his movies in 1970 – “M*A*S*H” and “Brewster McCloud” in which Cort played the title role. His best-known role was as the suicide-obsessed Harold in director Hal Ashby’s 1971 dark comedy cult classic “Harold and Maude”. His career was derailed by a near-fatal car accident in 1979 when he hit a car abandoned in lanes of the Hollywood Freeway. He continued to act in television and voiceover film roles. Cort died yesterday in assisted living of pneumonia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud_Cort
