Escondido Police handed out 68 traffic citations on Monday between 6a and 4p.  The shared responsibility crackdown cited drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.  Violations included speeding, ignoring traffic signs and signals, distracted driving, jaywalking, riding a bike on the wrong side of the road and others.  Funding for the detail came from the State Office of Traffic Safety, and was administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. https://thecoastnews.com/dozens-cited-during-escondido-traffic-enforcement-detail/

The future of The Wave Waterpark in Vista as a practice facility for local high school water sports is in the hands of the city council.  The Wave has been operating at a million-dollar-a-year deficit.  Both Vista and Rancho Buena Vista High water sports teams practice and train there.  Vista Mayor John Franklin believes the best course of action would be to bring in a private operator.  That will have to be decided by city council.  Franklin says there is no danger of the Wave closing.  He says that option is “not on the table”. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/3803926386416-vista-city-leaders-hear-concerns-about-the-future-of-the-wave-waterpark

Regional planners have again narrowed their recommended alternatives for a possible train tunnel through Del Mar to four likely routes based on the results of a study released last week that looked at 16 options for the tunnel.  The new SANDAG recommendations essentially are variations on three alternatives announced last June in the notice of preparation released for the project’s environmental impact report. That notice prompted a huge public response – more than 1,500 comments, which prompted SANDAG to do the value analysis study for a further evaluation of all options.  SANDAG officials presented the results of the study along with their recommendations at a meeting Tuesday of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, also known as the Del Mar fair board, which runs the Del Mar Fairgrounds.  The study and the recommendations will be presented to the SANDAG board of directors at a public meeting Feb. 28, where the board is expected to choose a single preferred alternative to be examined further. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/02/13/new-recommendations-released-for-train-tunnel-route-through-del-mar/

Denny’s is planning on closing between 70 and 90 restaurants this year.  That’s on top of the 88 it closed last year.  The company hasn’t revealed the locations of this year’s hit list.  But the ones closed last year had been open for an average of 30 years each.  Denny’s did open 14 new locations last year.  The company says it’s accelerating the closures of low-volume locations, will trim the number of items on its menu in half from 97 to 46, and will no longer require restaurants to be open 24/7.  Originally founded in 1954 as Danny’s Donuts, Denny’s now has about 1,300 locations nationwide. https://www.newsbreak.com/daily-voice-525087/3809473671420-denny-s-closing-30-more-restaurants-than-planned-here-s-why

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos remains closed after a second failed health inspection Tuesday.  It closed last Friday after several infractions were found relating to food safety certification.  Continuing violations found this week included hot and cold-water issues, “major” vermin problems, equipment and utensil storage, vermin proofing, cleaning items and other infractions.  Churchill’s has been at 887 West San Marcos Boulevard for over 20 years. https://www.sandiegoville.com/2025/02/north-county-san-diegos-churchills-pub.html

Oakland, a city that no longer has any major league sports teams, which could make some residents a bit grumpy is now tops on a list nobody wants to be on.  Preply, a student and tutor matching site has identified Oakland as the rudest city in California.  Long Beach wasn’t far behind. Though Oakland got the worst score in California, it only ranked as 5th rudest nationwide.  The rudest cities in the poll were Miami, Philadelphia and Tampa.  Omaha, Minneapolis and San Diego were the least rude. Those polled were asked how often they witnessed others committing rude acts, how often they perceive natives versus transplants in the city, and other questions.  The most common rude behaviors witnessed were lack of care for others, being loud in shared spaces, and lack of self-awareness.  Nearly one in four people surveyed have considered moving because of people’s rude behavior in their city. https://preply.com/en/blog/rudest-cities-2024/

On this day in music history – February 13,

  • In 1961, Frank Sinatra launched his own record label.  It was called Reprise Records.  It’s the reason he’s called “The Chairman of the Board”.  Founding principles under Sinatra was that artists have full creative freedom and eventually, complete ownership of their work.  Reprise became the home of acts including Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman and The Beach Boys.
  • In 1967, The Beatles released the double A side single, “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” which went to #1 for ten weeks.  The songs had originally been intended for inclusion in the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, which would be released a few months later. Instead, they appeared on the follow-up, “Magical Mystery Tour” album.
  • On the same day The Monkees announced that from here on they would play their own instruments on group recordings instead of the studios musicians who had been used up to that point.  Based on record sales, The Monkees at the time, were more popular than The Beatles, whom they parodied in a TV comedy series in 1966 and ‘67.
  • In 1969, Bob Dylan recorded versions of “Lay, Lady, Lay” in Nashville.  It was originally written for the soundtrack to the movie “Midnight Cowboy”, but wasn’t submitted in time to be included in the film.
  • On the same day, a launch party was held at Apple Records for the release of Mary Hopkin’s album “Postcard”, the American version of which included her hit single, “Those Were The Days”.  The label had been created a year earlier by The Beatles on which to release their own material.  It became the home of the group’s discovery, Mary, as well as James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston.
  • In 1970, on a Friday the 13th, Black Sabbath released their self-titled debut album.  It was the first successful heavy metal album.
  • In 1971, The Osmonds began the first of five weeks at #1 with “One Bad Apple”.  The singing brothers had been appearing on Andy Williams’ network TV show since 1962.
  • In 1978, Dire Straits began recording their first album in London.  It included the hit “Sultans of Swing” whose inspiration the group’s Mark Knopfler got from seeing a mediocre jazz band playing in a practically deserted pub.  After the performance, the leader announced that they were the Sultans of Swing.
  • In 1982, the marble slab was stolen from the grave of Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant’s grave.  Police found it two weeks later in a dry river bed.
  • In 1993, founding member of Musical Youth, Patrick Waite died at age 24 from a hereditary heart condition.  The group had a #1 hit eleven years earlier with “Pass the Dutchie”.
  • In 2002, country singer Waylon Jennings died in his sleep after a lengthy fight with diabetes.
  • In 2007, Rod Stewart was paid $1m to perform at a New York millionaire’s 60th birthday party.

Born on this day …

  • In 1919, Tennessee Ernie Ford, who had the 1955 #1 hit “Sixteen Tons”.  It was Capitol Records first #1 hit of the rock era, though it was not a rock song
  • In 1942, Peter Tork of The Monkees.  He passed at the age of 77 in February of 2019.
  • In 1950, singer, songwriter and record producer Peter Gabriel
