The Lunar New Year begins tomorrow.  It’s the Year of the Horse and it promises to be a good one for luxury brands in China, the biggest celebrant of Lunar New Year.  After years of decline, the Chinese luxury market is recovering.  Jeweler Harry Winston unveiled an $81,500 rose gold watch with diamond bezels and a red lacquer horse.  Gucci, Chloe and other fashion houses have $250 scarves and $5k shoulder bags with the horse motif and are selling well.  Analysts say Chinese consumers accounted for about one third of the world’s luxury goods sold before the pandemic.  It dipped to 23% after, but is regaining share.  The big difference is where those goods come from.  Before the pandemic, most Chinese luxury shopping was done abroad.  Last year, overseas spending made up only one third.  Chinese consumers are no longer wowed by Western brands. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/14/lunar-new-year-luxury-china.html

EV maker Rivian released fourth quarter numbers last week which beat Wall Street expectations.  The company achieved its first annual gross profit, mainly thanks to its software and joint services venture with Volkswagen.  It’s still losing money on the vehicles it sells.  The company expects to deliver between 62k and 67k new vehicles this year.  That would be about 1 ½ times the number of units delivered in 2025.  The market for expensive EVs has slowed.  So, Rivian will rely more on its new R2 midsize vehicle priced at about $45k moving forward.  Up until now, all it had was a $75k pickup truck and even more expensive SUV.  Shares in Rivian traded up about 20% Friday.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/12/rivian-automotive-rivn-earnings-q4-2025.html
