LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The San Diego County Traffic Advisory Committee is recommending all-way stops be added at two intersections on Main Street in downtown Fallbrook and a signal light added on Old Highway 395. Stop signs would be added on Main at Elder and Ivy Streets if approved at County Supervisor meetings on June 25 and August 27. County Public Works could erect the new signs immediately after that, although the underlying ordinance wouldn’t take effect until 30 days later. The new all-way stops were part of the Fallbrook Streetscape plan update approved by supervisors in December. The TAC also unanimously approved the addition of a signal light on Old Highway 395 at the intersection with Stewart Canyon Road and Cañonita Drive. Funding will have to be found even after anticipated supervisor approval at the Une 25 meeting. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/02/20/news/tac-recommends-all-way-stops-at-main-and-elder-main-and-ivy/78180.html https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/02/20/news/tac-recommends-signal-at-395-and-canonitastewart-canyon/78176.html

SPORTS
In the NBA – The Lakers topped the Trail Blazers in Portland 110-102. Milwaukee beat the visiting Clippers 116-110. Other winners were Indiana, Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, New York, Denver and San Antonio. Cleveland now has a slight edge over Oklahoma City as the team with the best record in the league. That could change tonight as the Cavaliers host New York and the Thunder play at Utah.
San Antonio is benching superstar Victor Wembanyama for the rest of the season over concerns about a blot clot in his left shoulder. The problem was discovered right after the All-Star Game. Treatment with blood thinners mean he can’t play. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/43937353/spurs-shut-victor-wembanyama-blood-clot-shoulder
In college hoops – #20 Maryland beat USC 88-71. UCSD topped Cal Poly 81-67.
In the NHL – Last night, Canada won the Four Nations tournament over Team USA on a goal by Connor McDavid 8 minutes into overtime. Final score 3-2. The regular season resumes tomorrow with 14 games including the Kings hosting Utah and the Ducks at Boston.
In minor league hockey – The San Diego Gulls next game is tonight at Bakersfield.
In Major League Baseball – The Dodgers lost to the Cubs 12-4 in the first spring training game of the season yesterday in Glendale, Arizona. In that game, pitcher Bobby Miller was hit in the right temple by a line drive, but was able to walk off the field. He’s now in concussion protocol. The 25-year old is in competition for a spot in LA’s starting rotation. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43941007/dodgers-pitcher-bobby-miller-hit-head-line-drive

In Major League Soccer – games tomorrow include LAFC hosting Minnesota. The Galaxy hosts San Diego FC Sunday.
In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals and Buffalo Bandits meet tomorrow at Pechanga Arena.
In the NFL – The Chargers and safety Elijah Moden have agreed to a three-year contract at $18.75m with all but $5m of it guaranteed. They’d traded Tennessee for him ahead of Week 1 last season in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick. He quickly became an essential part of LA’s defense, which was tops in the league for points allowed per game. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43943724/elijah-molden-chargers-agree-1875-million-3-year-deal
In golf – At the Mexico Open in Nuevo Vallarta, with most of the field still on the course for today’s second round, Aldrich Potgieter had a commanding four-stroke lead into the clubhouse at 16-under par after shooting a blistering 61 today. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down sharply. The Dow and Nasdaq each fell 1 ½%. The S&P 500 was off by 1 ¼%. United Health and Walmart led the decliners on the Dow. Gold traded $2.70 lower on the Comex at $2,953.40 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $1.96 to $70.61 a barrel.
Recent earnings reports haven’t been so bad. But major corporations predicting a cloudy future and once-again creeping inflation have now been joined by falling home sales figures and increasingly gloomy consumer sentiment data. The University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment dropped almost 10% in February, leaving it at a seven-month low. Now at 64.7, it’s down almost 16% over the past year. Expectations of coming tariffs are to blame for some of the decline. Inflation expectations are the rest of the problem. Those surveyed think inflation will increase from January’s 3.3% to 4.3% later this year. Existing home sales in January were down almost 5% from December – a notoriously slow month. But annualized year-over-year sales were still up 2%, marking the fourth consecutive month of annual growth. Inventory of homes for sale increased 3 ½%. There is now a 3 ½ month supply at the current sales pace. And median home prices rose another 4.8% from a year ago to $396k nationwide. The rate of sales fell the most in the West where prices are also among the highest. https://www.fxempire.com/news/article/consumer-sentiment-falls-9-8-in-feb-as-home-sales-drop-4-9-1499439
Tesla has recalled more than 375k vehicles for a power steering issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announcement this morning identified some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles’ operating software before 2023. Tesla has issued a free over-the-air software update and says owners of recalled vehicles will receive a letter in the mail with more information in the coming weeks. Just yesterday, the Washington Post reported that a team of NHTSA regulators who oversee the safety of autonomous cars was facing staffing cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Tesla CEO, Elon Musk. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tesla-recalls-375000-vehicles-power-steering-issue-rcna193180
Also reported yesterday in the Post, the Trump administration is considering disbanding the US Postal Service Board of Governors and placing the currently-independent agency under the direct control of the Commerce Department. The Wall Street Journal reported the same this morning. A White House official denied the claim that the President would sign an executive order to disband the board, but didn’t say anything about any interest in privatizing the Postal Service – something that Trump has spoken in support of in the past. Privatizing the US Postal Service could lead to some difficult addresses no longer receiving deliveries. Even companies like UPS sometimes rely on the Postal Service for so-called “last mile” service to difficult addresses. The President has already taken steps to fire the governing boards at the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/21/business/trump-postal-service-privatization/index.html

On this day in 1961, The hardworking pre-recording-contract Beatles played three gigs in one day – a lunchtime show at The Cavern Club, then that night at both the Casanova Club and Litherland Town Hall, all in Liverpool. Less than three years later, they were conquering America on the Ed Sullivan Show and played two sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall. They were the first rock act ever to perform there.

Meanwhile, in the adjacent studio, The Beatles were recording “Fixing A Hole” for their upcoming “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album with Mickey Dolenz from The Monkees attending the day’s mixing session. What a day to be at EMI’s Abbey Road studios!
