A suspect was arrested yesterday in connection with two Palomar Mountain shootings.  The most recent was February 23 when the victim was parked on the shoulder of South Grade Road near the summit, looking at the stars, when approached by a man with a handgun.  The suspect fired a single shot through the driver’s side window before fleeing in an unidentified vehicle.  There were no injuries.  But a similar incident happened on October 6 where the victim was struck in the arm.  Investigators identified the suspect as 46-year old Richardo Berron who taken into custody yesterday at San Diego International Airport.  Deputies found a 9mm handgun they believe is connected to at least one of the shootings at his Chula Vista residence.  Berron was booked into Vista jail on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/deputies-arrest-suspect-tied-to-2-shootings-on-palomar-mountain

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down 4 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by 3 tenths.  Gold dropped as well, trading down $66 on the Comex at $5,176.10 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $3.43 at $86.88 a barrel.  That, in spite of an agreement today by the International Energy Agency to release the largest batch of emergency oil reserves in history to counter the effects of the Iran war on energy markets.  400m barrels will be made available from the 32 member countries.  That’s twice what was released in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.  The IEA reserves were established in 1974 following the Arab oil embargo that created shortages at the retail level in the U.S. https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-oil-europe-reserve-release-eaf0cf9988cd7e06f0dc2a8ee800762e

The Labor Department released inflation numbers today.  But they were compiled before this month’s spike in oil prices.  February consumer prices were up an annualized 2.4%, with core inflation up 2.5%.  Both match numbers from January.  Inflation numbers reflecting price increases due to the Iran war come out in April.  President Trump has said prices would retreat if the war ends soon.  That caused a temporary drop in oil prices yesterday.  But an early end is looking less likely by the day.  After years of high inflation, affordability is a major issue in the upcoming mid-term elections.  Grocery prices were up 0.4% in February.  Gasoline was up 0.8% from January, though still down 5.6% compared to a year ago.  Two small bright spots in today’s report were rent inflation, which fell 0.1% from January, and used car prices, which were down 0.4%.  No matter what happens, it’s likely the Federal Reserve will put off any further interest rate cuts until after the inflationary effects of the war play out. https://apnews.com/article/inflation-gas-oil-trump-7303e4593d62c2dee899489571cb0548

Drilling down further, salad enthusiasts have nothing to cheer about in the latest inflation numbers.  The price of lettuce jumped more than 12% in February – the biggest monthly increase in eight years.  And tomato prices were up 6.4% – the most in ten years. www.bloomberg.com

Meta has purchased the social media network Moltbook, where AI agents interact with each other autonomously.  Moltbook made a big splash last month, adding millions of registered bots within days of its launch.  Advocates say it’s a major leap because it demonstrates what can happen when computers start socializing like humans.  Critics say it’s full of sham agents and security risks.  Meta and some of its Big Tech peers are facing pressure to prove that billion-dollar AI investments will make money.  https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/10/tech/meta-moltbook-bots-social-media

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Concerns about rider and driver safety led Uber to launch a feature Monday to allow both women riders and drivers to be matched with other women.  The nationwide rollout comes in the middle of an ongoing California class action lawsuit against the policy filed by male Uber drivers who claim discrimination through the creation of a bigger pool of potential riders for women drivers.  Lyft is facing a similar lawsuit over a gender-matching offering it came out with in 2024.  Both Uber and Lyft have faced thousands of reports of sexual assaults over the years from both drivers and passengers.  Uber had to pay $8.5m to an Arizona woman who claimed she was raped by one of its drivers.  https://apnews.com/article/uber-women-safety-9c974f92dfd7fb25d504d173b2429d06
