A dead crow found recently in the North Park neighborhood in San Diego has tested positive for West Nile Virus. It’s the first case detected this year. Though primarily a bird disease, it can be transmitted to people by mosquitoes. In 2015, 44 San Diego County residents tested positive for West Nile. Six of them died. Health officials recommend dumping all standing water to prevent mosquito breeding, use mosquito repellant containing DEET, oil of lemon or other active agents. And report possible mosquito sources and dead birds to the County Vector Control at 858 694 2888. https://www.countynewscenter.com/crow-in-north-park-area-tests-positive-for-west-nile-virus/

Gold continued to follow stocks, down $58.70 to $5,120.40 an ounce on the Comex. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $7.88 to $95.13 a barrel. In a rare bipartisan effort, the US Senate today passed a bill to reduce regulations, regulate corporate investors and expand how housing money can be used to build affordable homes and rentals. It now goes to the House, which passed a similar bill earlier this year. Consideration there is uncertain. And President Trump has said he won’t sign any new legislation until Congress acts to require voters to show proof of citizenship and end most mail-in balloting. The Senate is set to consider that bill next week. But passage is unlikely since all Democrats oppose it. https://apnews.com/article/affordable-housing-congress-bipartisan-8c15c9600bf0bd40e2420785aa5af20c
After a month of testimony, the jury is now hearing closing arguments in the California trial over whether social media companies should be liable for harms caused to children from the use of their platforms. The remaining defendants are Meta and Google, owners of Facebook/Instagram and YouTube respectively. TikTok and Snap were originally also defendants. But they both settled before the trial began. The outcome of this and two other cases are expected to influence how thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies are likely to play out. https://apnews.com/article/meta-instagram-facebook-trial-social-media-addiction-0e99c9ba6159421720d616f9facd10f0
YouTube is now the world’s biggest media company. Its $62b total revenue last year surpassed Disney’s $60.9b. That doesn’t include Disney’s park revenue. YouTube’s video platform earns $40.4b in ad revenue. That’s more than Disney’s, Paramount’s, NBC Universal’s, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s combined. It shows how advertisers have pivoted to meet cord cutters where they live. www.morningbrew.com
Home sales rebounded slightly in February. But supply growth heading into the Spring house hunting season is sluggish. Sales of existing homes were up 1.7% from January, but fell 1.4% last month compared to February 2025. The median price nationwide was $398k – up just 3 tenths of a percent from a year ago. There is currently a 3.8-month supply of homes for sale. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/10/february-home-sales-see-small-rebound-but-supply-growth-is-sluggish.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
One thing about the rich, they can afford to stay two steps ahead of attempts to tax them. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced yesterday that he’s retiring to Miami, which a lot of people do. But he’s a billionaire and announced his intent to move the same day that his and Starbucks’ home state of Washington passed a new 9.9% tax on household incomes over $1m. It’s expected to pass the state Senate and be signed into law by the governor. Schultz has purchased a $44m penthouse in Surfside, Florida, just a stone’s throw from Indian Creek Island, the private island home of former Seattle resident Jeff Bezos, Ivanka Trump and Mark Zuckerberg who recently defected from California. Washington is not the first to pass a millionaire tax. Massachusetts did it in 2022. Virginia and Rhode Island are attempting to follow that blueprint. California has a ballot measure in the upcoming November election, that if passed, would retroactively tax billionaires 5%. It’s prompted many of the rich to say they’ll move. That’s where the retroactive part comes in. www.morningbrew.com
