The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index plunged to 57.9 in the latest report, released today. That’s down from 64.7 one month ago and is now at its lowest since November 2022 – about the time consumer inflation peaked. Those surveyed are anticipating inflation climbing to an annual rate of 4.9% during the next year. They also feel inflation will be a long-term problem with prices increasing at an annual rate of 3.9% in the next five to ten years. The Federal Reserve’s goal for inflation is half that much. Uncertainties over the current trade war and the possibilities of the cost of tariffs being passed on to consumers are the main driver of the current decline of the index. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/consumer-sentiment-confidence-report-march-2025-tariffs-inflation-trump/
The Senate will vote this afternoon to prevent a government shutdown at midnight. Democrats are against the House-authored bill which they feel gives President Trump too much discretion on spending decisions. At this point, the alternative is to let government funding lapse at midnight. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer outraged many in his party by making it clear he will not allow a government shutdown, saying it “would allow DOGE to shift into overdrive.“ The bill requires at least 60 of the 100 Senators to vote in favor. Eight Democrats need to cross the party line to hit that threshold. https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-trump-gop-chuck-schumer-86385e644239a3dc1558b37d13094234?user_email=404e3e1e190f5ed2319fc8d5eee050b4c80fb0c39e672c5bb56b123adccff703&utm_medium=Morning_Wire&utm_source=Sailthru_AP&utm_campaign=Morning%20Wire_14%20Mar_2025&utm_term=Morning%20Wire%20Subscribers
President Trump’s administration is expected to move ahead with a second wave of mass firings and budget cuts across the U.S. federal government even as two federal judges ordered it to reinstate thousands of federal workers. One of those rulings was handed down yesterday in San Francisco. https://www.reuters.com/
The Postmaster General has come out in favor of DOGE’s efforts and plans to cut 10k workers and billions of dollars from the US Postal Service budget. In a letter to Congress yesterday, Louis DeJoy said he’ll work with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency and the US General Services Administration to achieve “further efficiencies.” DeJoy’s agency has a $78b annual budget and has been struggling to stay solvent in recent years, largely because of the decline in first class mail. USPS currently employs about 640k workers. The announced cut of 10k will be done through an early retirement offer. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/03/14/us-postal-service-doge-agreement/
iRobot, the company that makes the Roomba autonomous vacuum cleaner says it may go out of business in the next 12 months if it doesn’t find a buyer. The company’s stock tanked by 36% when the news hit. Amazon was going to acquire the company three years ago for $1.7b. But the deal fell apart under regulatory scrutiny. Since then, the company CEO resigned and iRobot has laid off more than half of its workforce. www.morningbrew.com
