As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed modest gains.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 3 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up a third.  And the Nasdaq was up 4 tenths.  Gold was $2.30 higher on the Comex, trading at $5,004.40 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.45 at $94.95 a barrel.  The international benchmark, Brent Crude is still above $100 a barrel.

In an X post over the weekend, FCC chairman Brendan Carr threatened to revoke broadcast licenses over what he called “news distortions” related to the Iran war.  Carr accused stations of “running hoaxes and news distortions”, saying that’s not “operating in the public interest” as required and could therefore be considered cause for denying license renewals beginning in 2028.  President Trump had recently accused the Wall Street Journal and, in his words, “other lowlife papers and media” of wanting the U.S. to lose the war.  www.morningbrew.com

Even as Southern California is experiencing record-high heat for mid-March, snow falling in the Midwest has caused the cancellation of nearly 1k commercial flights and disrupted another 1,800.  All of this on top of staffing issues with TSA as a result of the partial government shutdown has caused major delays at hubs including New York, Chicago and Atlanta.  This is the third shutdown in less than a year to leave TSA workers temporarily working without pay.  Many are having to seek second jobs, sometimes at the risk of missing their shifts with the TSA.  https://apnews.com/article/travel-weather-storms-flights-airports-f485f93852f31ab2fbd0513a117c7e20

Dick’s Sporting Goods has been getting its act together, just about doubling its sales over the past decade.  They’ve done it by catering to the youth sports market.  According to the Aspen Institute, youth sports are a $40b annual market in the U.S.  The average US sport family spent over $1k just on each child’s primary sport last year.  That’s up 46% from 2019.  Dick’s also invested in sports technology, acquiring GameChanger, a score and stat keeping app popular with youth sports leagues back in 2016.  It now earns Dick’s about $150m annually.  The app for Dick’s Sporting Goods is one of the most-downloaded apps at the iPhone App Store.  Dick’s acquired Foot Locker last year and had planned to close underperforming stores, but found that reworking them with streamlined inventory turned many of them around.  They also plan to roll out dozens of new megastores called House of Sport, modeled roughly on the Bass Pro Shops concept of keeping customers engaged in the store.  Stock in Dicks has mostly outperformed the S&P 500 since 2020, but is still down about 3% while it digests its Foot Locker purchase.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Four years ago, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused gas prices to skyrocket, five states temporarily suspended their gas taxes to give consumers a break.  So far, the US-Israeli war with Iran has caused a 27% jump in the average price of a gallon of regular gas with diesel prices soaring even more, according to the Automobile Club.  Increased transportation costs are expected to lead to price increases for many goods and services.  Yet only one governor who suspended gas taxes in 2022 is even considering doing it again.  Possible reasons are state budgets less able to sustain loss in revenue this time.  Also, consumers don’t receive all of the savings, in most cases between 60 and 80%, making tax moratoriums financially and politically less attractive.  New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the tax suspension didn’t work as intended last time because bottom line fuel prices just kept going higher, negating the savings to consumers.  She thinks the federal government should suspend its 18.4 cents per gallon tax since war was declared at the federal level and states are receiving less federal support under the second Trump administration.  Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont is the only governor calling for a one-month state gas tax holiday.  That would save the average two-driver household about $21.  It would cost the state $40m and would have to be approved by the state legislature. https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/17/economy/state-gas-tax-holidays

Today’s average retail price for a gallon of regular nationwide is $3.81, up 90 cents so far this month.  In San Diego County, it’s $5.59, up $1.04 over the past 30 days – most of it in the last two weeks.  In Riverside County, the average price is $5.48.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.85 at Son’s on 5th Avenue at Centre City Parkway in Escondido.  In Southwest Riverside County, it’s $5.09 at Temecula Costco, Murrieta Sam’s Club and several other stations. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.4934243&lng=-117.1488156&z=13
