LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Sixteen federal search warrants were served yesterday morning in Escondido, San Diego, Orange County and Roanoke, Virginia as part of an operation targeting an Escondido-based drug network.  The alleged ring is accused of trafficking large amounts of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and the prescription medication, Adderall.  Yesterday’s raids yielded about 116 pounds of meth, more than four pounds of fentanyl, and what the US Attorney’s Office says were “substantial quantities” of the other two.  About 100 federal agents and other law enforcement gathered in a parking lot near Escondido Police Headquarters just before yesterday’s sweep began. 16 people were arrested – 11 of them were from Escondido.  The others lived in San Diego, Oceanside, Encinitas, National City, and Irvine.

The 22nd District Agricultural Association, the operators of the Del Mar Fairgrounds voted yesterday to resume negotiations with the City of Del Mar to build 60 affordable homes at the Fairgrounds.  The San Diego region has a state mandate to build more than 170k homes.  Del Mar’s portion is only 163, with 101 of them low and very-low income units.  100 permits have already been issued – most of them, additional dwelling units on existing properties. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/del-mar-fairgrounds-resumes-affordable-housing-discussions

In the Eastern Conference, Cleveland has clinched the division.  They’re 6 ½ games ahead of second-place Boston, who’ve also clinched a spot in the playoffs.  Nobody eliminated yet the East. https://www.espn.com/nba/standings

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up on all three major US indexes.  The Dow gained four tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up more than a half.  And the Nasdaq rose ¾ of a percent.  Comex gold futures were up 40 cents at $3,041.20 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained 41 cents to $67.31 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve announced at its media conference today that it is holding interest rates steady for now at about 4 ¼ to 4 ½%, but indicated two likely rate cuts later this year.  Inflation is up and the economy is slowing.  Faced with that dilemma, many economists expect the Fed to stay on the sidelines until some of the dust settles. The Fed normally raises rates when inflation increases and lowers them when the economy slows.  In part, because of the unfolding tariff war, both things are happening at the same time.    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/19/fed-rate-decision-march-2025.html

Google parent company, Alphabet’s stock dipped 4% yesterday on news of its acquisition of cybersecurity startup, Wiz to help Google improve its third-place market share in that sector behind Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon Web Services.  Though Google needed the service, investors seem to think Alphabet overpaid at $32b in cash.  That’s about one third of the cash Alphabet had on hand.  www.morningbrew.com

Faced with the prospects of protests and vandalism that have occurred elsewhere, including right here in Encinitas a few days ago, the Vancouver International Auto Show has removed Tesla from its event this week over safety concerns for vendors and attendees.  There have been protests at Canadian Tesla facilities and the company’s vehicles have been excluded from British Columbia’s electric vehicle rebate program as a result of the tariff war with the US.  Tesla had been given several chances to voluntarily withdraw from the Vancouver show, which has an annual attendance of over 100k people. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-auto-show-tesla-removed-1.7487191

Miso Robotics has sold out the first run of its latest fast food robot.  The new Flippy is capable of handling cooking duties at fast food restaurants, is only half the size of the first Flippy and is now being tested by Jack in the Box and White Castle.  Miso is scaling up to meet buyer demand for the fry-cook that always gets it right and never calls in sick.  But at $5,400 a month, a Flippy, working 12 hours a day is still slightly more expensive than a median wage real person.  But at 24 hours a day, Flippy is a significant savings.  And Miso claims that Flippy works faster than human employees with fewer mistakes. https://www.restaurantdive.com/news/miso-robotics-develops-smaller-faster-flippy-white-castle-jack-in-the-box/738567/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Tesla has won a California permit to begin offering rides in autonomous vehicles.  It’s the first step towards Tesla robotaxis.  The newly acquired Transport Charter Permit allows for a shuttle service for employees with drivers behind the wheel for backup.  Other possible uses are prearranged roundtrip sightseeing.  That’s considerably less flexibility than Uber and Lyft, whose current Transportation Network Company permits allow drivers with personal vehicles to connect with paying passengers through an app.  For Tesla to progress to the point of offering driverless robotaxis to the paying public requires permission from both the state Public Utilities Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles. https://insideevs.com/news/753966/tesla-ride-hailing-permit-california/

President Trump yesterday fired two of the five members of the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces consumer protection and anti-trust laws.  Commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter both took to social media to say their firings were illegal.  Bedoya’s post went on to say, “the president wants the FTC to be a lapdog for his golfing buddies.”  https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/18/business/ftc-commissioners-fired/index.html
