LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A shooting early Sunday morning near a sports bar in Temecula resulted in two men being critically wounded. A suspect, 25-year old Terrance Sherman was arrested in a vehicle stop a couple of blocks away. He’s being held in lieu of $1m bail at French Valley jail. All westbound lanes of the 78 freeway were closed between El Camino Real and Jefferson this morning due to a multi-vehicle accident involving a cement truck. It was first reported around 7:40a. Two westbound and one eastbound lane were still closed for cleanup as of 10a. Students and faculty at Cal State San Marcos planned to walk out of classes this morning in protest over the management of the California State University system. A planned Week of Action will feature marches, rallies, and teach-ins system-wide. A peaceful demonstration was planned at CSUSM’s Kellogg Plaza today at noon. For the first time in 14 years, Cal Fire officials today are releasing updated maps for Southern California, showing where wildfires are most likely to happen in the next several decades. It also shows where fire-resistant building codes apply. Cal Fire notes that the maps don’t take into account efforts by homeowners or communities to minimize wildfire danger by clearing brush or hardening their homes. The Oceanside Police Department has been offered grant money for a 13-month trial of first responder drones that could arrive at the origin of a 911 call critical minutes before officers can get there. A spokesman said the mere presence of the 2 to 3-foot drones could help stop criminal activity and provide officers with additional information before they arrive. Camp Pendleton officials issued a noise advisory for high-explosives munitions training on the base this week. Explosions may be heard now through Sunday at all hours of the day and night up to 20 miles from the Whiskey and Zulu impact areas. Parts of San Diego had a little light rain yesterday. Nothing in North County. We’ll have a couple of medium-hot days in Pala before we settle into the mid-70s for about a week. Today could be the hottest day so far this year. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS
In the NBA – The Clippers stomped the visiting Grizzlies 128-108 Friday and lost to the first-place Thunder 103-101 yesterday. The visiting Bulls routed the Lakers 146-115 Saturday in spite of Luka Doncic’s 34 points. In other games yesterday, the winners were Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta, Miami, San Antonio, Boston and Denver. Boston is now the second Eastern Conference team to clinch the playoffs.
In college hoops – For the first time since the NCAA tournament bracket expanded to 64 teams forty years ago, the Sweet 16 will be made up entirely of teams from power conferences. No long shots. The highest seed to reach the Sweet 16 was #10 Arkansas. Everyone else is 6 or higher. All four #1 seeds made it, as did three of the four #2s. The Big Ten was the early bracket winner, becoming the first league to go 8 and 0 in the first round. The mostly-new Big 12 matched a league record with four teams making it to the Sweet 16. In yesterday’s games, the only upset was 6th seed Ole Miss over #3 Iowa State 91-78. Other NCAA winners were Florida, Duke, Alabama, Michigan State, Kentucky, Maryland, and Arizona. Teams will now have several travel days to the four regional sites for the next round. Bracket play resumes Thursday. In the NIT second round, yesterday’s winners included North Texas, Loyola Chicago, UC Irvine, Kent State, and UAB.
In the NHL – The Kings demolished the visiting Hurricanes 7-2 Saturday. Carolina then moved down the freeway to Anaheim yesterday and beat the Ducks 5-2. Yesterday’s other winners were Chicago, Buffalo, Florida, St. Louis, Vegas, and the Kings with the same score as Friday, but this time over the visiting Bruins.
In minor league hockey – Over the weekend at Henderson, the San Diego Gulls split a pair with the Knights, winning 4-0 Friday and losing 4-2 Saturday. Their next game is Wednesday hosting San Jose.
In Major League Baseball – exhibition games, the Padres and Diamondbacks tied at 5 yesterday. The Dodgers creamed the Angels 7-1 in the first game of the annual Freeway Series. That continues today and tomorrow in Anaheim. The Padres play Seattle today in both teams’ final game of the preseason. The regular season for everyone besides the Dodgers and Cubs on Thursday. They started the season with two games in Tokyo last week.
The Angels acquired right handed pitcher Ian Anderson from Atlanta yesterday in exchange for left-hander Jose Suarez. Anderson hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2022. In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, the Galaxy and Minnesota Untied tied at 2, and LAFC shut out Sporting Kansas City 2-0. San Diego lost to Austin 2-1 yesterday. San Diego hosts LAFC this Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. The Galaxy will host Orlando.
In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals beat the Roughnecks 16-12 in Calgary Saturday. Their next game is this Saturday at Rochester.
In Rugby – The San Diego Legion beat Miami 31-12 Saturday at USD’s Torero Stadium. Their next game is Saturday against Houston. https://stats.majorleague.rugby/fixtures/
In golf – At the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida, Viktor Hovland was the winner, shooting a 67 yesterday and finishing with a four-round 273, eleven under par – one stroke ahead of Justin Thomas. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks jumped today on reports that tariffs will be narrower than first believed. The Dow gained 1.1%. The S&P 500 was up 1 ½%. The Nasdaq gained almost a full 2%. Gold fell $7.90 on the Comex to $3,013.50 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 66 cents to $68.97 a barrel.
South Korean-based Hyundai will today announce a $20b investment in the US including a $5b steel plant in Louisiana. A media conference is scheduled for this afternoon at the White House with President Trump, Hyundai Chairman Euisun Chung and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. It’s just the latest announcement by a foreign manufacturer or US company sourcing abroad, hoping to head off the effects of tariffs before they’re scheduled to begin April 2. https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/24/cars/hyundai-investment/index.html
Genetic testing company, 23andMe has filed for bankruptcy after years of trying to find a sustainable business model. The firm’s CEO has resigned, although she will remain on the board of directors. Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Snow White” opened with $43m in ticket sales on 4,200 screens – ten times the business of the #2 film, “Black Bag” in its second weekend in theaters. After six weeks, “Captain America: Brave New World” moved up to #3 with $4.1m. “The Alto Knights” opened in 6th place of 2,600 screens with $3.1m. It’s a bit of a commute from Pala, but the San Diego County Fair has begun hiring for the 1,200 part-time positions it has available for this year’s event in Del Mar. The US Postal Service will hold a first-day-of-issue ceremony for its “Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture” series of stamps at the annual Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque on April 25. The four stamps showcase original paintings of Native American dancers by Mateo Romero from Cochiti Pueblo. The paintings include Women’s Traditional Dance, Crow Hop Dance, Men’s Hoop Dance, and Women’s Fancy Shawl Dance. The stamps are First Class one-ounce rate “forever” stamps and will be available at www.usps.com/shopstamps, through USA Philatelic and at Post Offices nationwide beginning April 25. - 1958, Elvis Presley reported to the Memphis draft board to begin his service in the Army, interrupting the peak of his early career in music.
- In 1966, Britain’s favorite Simon & Garfunkel song entered the charts. Paul Simon said “Homeward Bound” was written at Farnworth Station in Widnes, England along the Mersey River where he’d been stranded overnight waiting for a train. A plaque at the station commemorating its part in the song has been stolen many times by memorabilia hunters.
- In 1973, during a Lou Reed concert in Buffalo, a fan jumped on stage and bit Lou on the tuchas. That’s buttock for those who don’t speak Yiddish. Reed’s father’s real name was Rabinowitz.
- On the same day, The O’Jays were at #1 with “Love Train”.
- In 1977, Fleetwood Mac released the single “Dreams” from their 11th album, “Rumors”. Stevie Nicks is said to have written it in ten minutes. It became their first and only #1 hit.
- In 1985, former Earth, Wind & Fire singer Philip Baily and Phil Collins from Genesis were at #1 With “Easy Lover”.
- In 1990, Sinead O’Connor was at #1 with “Nothing Compares to You”, written by Prince. It topped the charts in 14 countries including six weeks in the U.S.
- In 1992, a Chicago court settled the Milli Vanilli class action suit by ordering up to $3 rebates for anyone who could prove they bought the group’s music before their lip-syncing scandal broke in 1990. The duo had won the Best New Artist Grammy the year before but were stripped of the award in 1990 when it was revealed that neither of them actually sang on their album.
- In 1997, Philly soul singer Harold Melvin, front man for The Blue Notes died at the age of 57. Their biggest hit was “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” from 1972.
- In 2001, a stretch of Highway 19 in Macon, Georgia was named Duane Allman Boulevard. It’s near where the Allman Brothers Band guitarist died in a motorcycle crash in 1971 at the age of 24.
- In 2022, Spotify paid a total of $7b to the holders of music rights the previous year – almost a quarter of the music industry’s total revenue for 2021. Over 52k artists earned more than $10k from Spotify that year. 130 of them were paid over $5m. Though the streaming service didn’t say who earned what, its most streamed acts that year were Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, and Justin Bieber.

- In 1935, session bass player Carol Kaye from LA’s Wrecking Crew, who played on an estimated 10k recordings in her 50-year career including many Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin productions. She played on TV show themes including those for Mission Impossible, M.A.S.H., Kojak and Streets of San Francisco. She and double bass player Chuck Berghofer created the signature bass line for Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking”.
- In 1937, R&B singer Billy Stewart who had a top ten hit in 1966 with his version of George Gershwin’s “Summertime”. He died in a car crash in 1970.
- In 1938, singer-songwriter Don Covay who wrote “Chain of Fools” – a Grammy winning hit for Aretha Franklin.
- In 1946, harmonica player Lee Oskar from LA funk band War.
