LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The new Cal Fire wildfire risk maps released yesterday show a 76% increase in danger zone acreage in Southern California.  Additional moderate, high and very high-risk areas have been added in Fallbrook along the boundaries of Camp Pendleton, and the Live Oak Park Road and Winterwarm areas.   De Luz, west of Temecula was added as a high-risk area well.  Pala and most of the San Luis Rey River valley did not get any designations on the new map.  Local governments have until April 23 to hold public hearings and three months after that to adopt the maps for local fire zone designations.  Cal Fire’s calculations were based on variables including climate, vegetation, terrain, and fire history.    https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/03/24/southern-california-fire-danger-zones-increase-76-in-new-maps/

Legoland in Carlsbad has committed to its single-largest investment in a park attraction to date – an indoor roller coaster, expected to debut next year.  The announcement came today with few accompanying details except that the galaxy-themed attraction will be inside a 43-foot tall structure and include a second spinner-type ride and children’s play area.  It’ll be built where the Driving School and Junior Driving School had been.  They’re in the process of being relocated elsewhere in the park.  Legoland’s Florida park will be getting an identical coaster with $90m being spent by Legoland on the two projects. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/25/legoland-commits-to-single-most-expensive-attraction-yet-at-carlsbad-park/

Carlsbad is the only city in San Diego County that prohibits dogs in its city parks.  Instead, it has three off-leash dog parks with one more having been proposed.  Canines have been prohibited at other city parks and beaches since 1972, though the law is rarely enforced.  When it is, it usually involves just a discussion with law enforcement, not a ticket.  Some people want less enforcement.  Some want more.  The biggest request is to allow dogs on beaches.  As a result, the city has agreed to have staff prepare new regulations for consideration.  Most beaches in the city are state beaches, which do not allow dogs and wouldn’t be affected by a new city ordinance.  The nearest beach that currently allows dogs in in Del Mar. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/23/carlsbad-considers-making-it-legal-to-have-dogs-in-city-parks/

The future of Chuckwalla National Monument is in question after it was omitted from a White House media release over the weekend.  Four days ago, the Trump administration issued a fact sheet detailing the reversal of a number of Biden administration policies including termination of a proclamation tying up millions of acres on federal national monuments, making them unavailable for economic development. Chuckwalla was created by order of President Biden just before he left office in January.  It’s just east of the Coachella Valley and includes homelands of several Cahuilla tribes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w6uTNvzqrM

We had our first 90-degree day of the year yesterday in Pala.  It won’t be quite as hot today and will settle into mid-70s Spring weather for at least a week beginning tomorrow.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA – Eight games last night.  The Lakers lost their third straight – this time 118-106 to Orlando.  Kevin Durant was high-scorer in the league last night with 38 points as his Suns edged the visiting Bucks 108-106.  Other winners were Indiana, Toronto, Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago and Boston.

In college hoops – The NCAA championship tournament resumes Thursday.  Meanwhile, at Day 2 of the Purple College Basketball Invitational at Daytona Beach, yesterday’s winners were Incarnate Word, Florida Gulf Coast and Cleveland State.  Semifinals are today.  At the NIT, two quarterfinal games today – Chattanooga at Bradley and North Texas at Oklahoma State.

In the NHL – Just four games last night.  Two of them ended in a shootout – Vancouver over New Jersey 4-3.  Same score for Columbus over the Islanders.  In the other two games, Dallas shut out the visiting Wild 3-0 and Detroit routed Utah 5-1 at Salt Lake City.

In minor league hockey – the San Diego Gulls next game is tomorrow hosting San Jose.

In Major League Baseball – The Mariners and Padres tied at 7 in each team’s final preseason game.  The Angels evened up the freeway series by beating the visiting Dodgers 5-4.  The deciding game is tonight in Anaheim. Twelve other teams play their final pre-season game today as well.  The Padres open the regular season Thursday hosting Atlanta.  The Angels open on the road against the White Sox.  The Dodgers continue their regular season Thursday with a home opener against Detroit.

The Angels today released outfielder Mickey Moniak.  They’d acquired him from Philadelphia in 2022 in a trade for pitcher Noah Syndergaard.  Moniak batted .219 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs last season and was expected to share starts in center field this season with Jo Adell, making his release something of a surprise.  That frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44402901/angels-release-former-no-1-overall-pick-mickey-moniak

The Padres have rounded out their bench with the addition of outfielder Brandon Lockridge.  He’ll likely start games with opposing left-handed starting pitchers including Thursday when Chris Sale will start for Atlanta.  Lockridge was acquired from the Yankees at last year’s trade deadline. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/24/speedy-outfielder-brandon-lockridge-fills-out-bench/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed and trading in a narrow range.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down a small fraction.  The S&P 500 was up a similar amount.  The Nasdaq gained 3 tenths of a percent.  Comex gold traded up $12.70 at $3,028.30 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 22 cents, trading at $68.89 a barrel.

Consumer confidence is at its lowest point in four years as President Trump continues his sweeping economic agenda.  The Conference Board notes that its overall index has been trending downward since December and slid another 7.2 points this month to 92.9.  Most Americans are expecting higher inflation this year and more are now predicting the economy will slip into recession.  Expectation of recession is at a nine-month high.  Federal Reserve officials tend to agree.  The President’s trade war has been both baffling and contentious and the expectations of those surveyed about “income, business, and labor market conditions” in the coming year dropped to its lowest level in 12 years.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/25/economy/us-consumer-confidence-march-recession/index.html

A trend is emerging in the tariff war being waged by the White House – prepare people for the worst by announcing extreme moves, then deliver something not quite as bad.  That was once again the strategy that gave markets a lift yesterday when President Trump announced that April 2 would be “a big day” – a walk back from previous insistence that it would be THE big day for tariffs to kick in.  He also detailed some exceptions from tariffs, saying “I may give a lot of countries breaks.”  It’s like in TV’s “Mad Men” when fictional executive Don Draper said, “If you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation.” https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/25/economy/tariffs-trump-april-2/index.html

Days after asking DOGE for help in cutting costs, US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is stepping down, effective immediately.  Deputy Postmaster General, Doug Tulino will cover until Governors name a permanent successor.  DeJoy was appointed in 2020 and led the Postal Service through the first Presidential election to rely heavily on mail-in voting due to the pandemic.  Mass delivery of ballots that year was pulled off with limited issues.  Since 2019, six rate increases have seen first class postage stamps rise from 50 to 73 cents.  Yet the Postal Service is predicting a net loss of $9.5b for the fiscal year ending September 30 – up from $6.5b last year.   https://www.axios.com/2025/03/24/dejoy-stepping-down-usps?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=AxiosNews/magazine/Economy+&+Business

Thousands of postal workers nationwide rallied over the weekend to protest proposals to dismantle the Postal Service.  President Trump has said he’s considering merging the independent government agency with 635k workers with the Commerce Department.  Elon Musk’s DOGE thinks the agency should be privatized. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2025/03/24/postal-service-changes-protests-usps-trump/82633545007/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=topic/news

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Fifteen million people have personal data stored with genetic testing company, 23andMe, which filed bankruptcy over the weekend with the goal of finding a buyer.  The company insists customers’ information is and will continue to be protected.  But how reliable is that promise once the company changes hands?  Because of that, California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office released an 8-step guide to deleting your genetic data from 23andMe.  It describes how to get to the sections, “Delete Data”, “Preferences”, and “Research and Product Consents” within your 23andMe account to download and then remove data, opt out of them continuing to store DNA samples, and withdraw consent to have your information and samples available for third-party research. https://www.npr.org/2025/03/25/nx-s1-5339695/how-delete-23andme-data-bankruptcy

On this day in music history – March 25,

  • In 1966, The Beatles took part in the photo shoot for the infamous “butcher cover” photo for the front of their next album, “Yesterday and Today” at Bob Whitaker’s studio in London.  Public reaction to the photo of the four in white coats covered with raw meat and mutilated and butchered dolls was so bad that Capitol Records recalled 750k copies in order to replace the covers at a cost of $250k, wiping out initial profits from the release.  All previous Beatles albums had immediately turned a profit.  The few butcher cover albums that were sold or distributed to disk jockeys and reviewers, and even the ones that were recalled, covered over and re-distributed are now worth a lot of money.
  • In 1967, The Turtles began the first of three weeks at #1 with “Happy Together”, a song that had been rejected by a dozen other acts before being offered to The Turtles.
  • On the same day, The Who and Cream made their U.S. concert debut at 58th Street Theater in New York City as part of a rock & roll revue presented by New York radio disc jockey, Murray the K.
  • In 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their week-long bed-in at the presidential suite of The Amsterdam Hilton in Montreal.  They held daily press conferences from their bed and also recorded the hit single, “Give Peace a Chance” in the room.
  • In 1972, “Horse With No Name” by America began the first of three weeks at #1.
  • In 1983, Motown Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with a concert in Pasadena featuring The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Jr. Walker, The Commodores, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and The Jackson 5 … wow, what a show!
  • In 1989, Madonna was at #1 with “Like a Prayer”.  The highly controversial music video was voted “Most Groundbreaking Music Video of All Time” by MTV viewers in 2005
  • In 2000, NSYNC set a new world record by selling one million tickets in one day for their upcoming concert tour, netting them $42m.
  • In 2006, country music legend Buck Owens died.  He pioneered the Bakersfield sound and had 20 #1 hits on the Billboard Country Music charts.
  • In 2009, Dan Seals from England Dan & John Ford Coley died at the age of 61.  He began a solo career in country music after the duo split.  He was the younger brother of Jim Seals from Seals & Crofts.

Born in this day …

  • In 1934, rockabilly singer-songwriter Johnny Burnette who had the 1961 hit, “You’re Sixteen”.
  • In 1938, singer-songwriter and actor Hoyt Axton who wrote songs for Elvis, Three Dog Night, John Denver, Ringo Starr and Glen Campbell.  He played the father in the 80s movie, “Gremlins”.
  • In 1942, Aretha Franklin.
  • In 1947, Sir Elton John
  • In 1966, Guns ‘N’ Roses drummer Frank Ferrer, who’d also been with The Psychedelic Furs
  • Also in 1966, Canadian guitarist and singer Jeff Healy, who you may remember from the movie, “Roadhouse”.
