LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A multi-vehicle traffic collision with one fatality blocked all northbound lanes of I-15 near Main Street in Lake Elsinore yesterday afternoon. Four people were reported to have been transported to a local hospital and one required extrication from a vehicle. The crash was first reported at approximately 3:54p involving as many as six vehicles. That was later corrected to four vehicles. Early reports indicated all lanes were blocked, with motorists using the shoulder to get around the accident. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/03/19/news/fatal-multi-vehicle-crash-triggers-sigalert-on-i-15-north-in-lake-elsinore/81506.html
Riverside County supervisors voted unanimously yesterday to terminate the contract with organizers of the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival over $76k in unpaid bills. That ends any chance of there being a festival this year at Lake Skinner and puts the future of the event in question. Riverside County Sheriffs and Fire Departments have also gone unpaid for services rendered. Dates previously reserved for this year’s festival are now available to campers at the county-owned lake. Events.com had purchased the Balloon & Wine Festival in 2025 and operated it as an all-country music venue last summer. The company’s website and Facebook page have been silent since August. This morning, the city of Temecula issued an open letter withdrawing all support for the festival until all money owed by Events.com is repaid. A spokesperson for the TVWBF said today that the festival is attempting to pay its debts with “final payouts scheduled to be completed by April.” https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-valley-balloon-wine-festival-contract-may-be-terminated-2026-what-know https://patch.com/california/temecula/away-temecula-valley-balloon-wine-festivals-contract-canceled-officials-respond
San Diego County Animal Services seized seven severely malnourished dogs from a property in Bonsall yesterday. They’d gained entry Monday night with the assistance of Sheriff’s deputies and determined that the animals which were huddled in the dark should be fed and watered, then collected in the morning. Evidence collected at the uninhabited property will be evaluated for possible legal action. The dogs are being medically evaluated and treated at the county’s Bonita animal shelter. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/san-diego-county-caring-for-abandoned-malnourished-dogs-found-in-bonsall/509-fbafb368-6fab-466e-915e-b07343a77e22
The San Diego County Water Authority and Western Municipal Water District have signed a long-term water supply agreement to provide the Riverside County agency with water while generating consistent revenue for the San Diego agency. Under the agreement, Western Water will receive a minimum of 10,000 acre-feet of water annually over the next 21 years — enough to supply about 30,000 Southern California households each year. The agency, which provides water, wastewater and recycled water services to nearly 1 million people across 527 square miles in western Riverside County, also agreed to purchase about 30,000 acre-feet of water for future delivery at a cost of nearly $40m. https://thecoastnews.com/county-water-agency-secures-long-term-supply-deal-with-riverside-district/

A New Mexico jury has ruled against Meta in a child exploitation case and ordered the media giant to pay $375m in the landmark trial. The state attorney general had accused the operator of Facebook and Instagram of failing to protect kids who use its apps from child predators. The case came about following an undercover operation involving a fake social media profile of a 13-year old girl that became “inundated with images and targeted solicitations” from child abusers. Jury deliberations began Monday with the panel deciding yesterday that Meta willfully violated the state’s unfair practices act and misled people about the safety of its apps. Meta plans to appeal yesterday’s verdict. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/24/jury-reaches-verdict-in-meta-child-safety-trial-in-new-mexico.html
Meanwhile in another landmark test case in Los Angeles, a jury found that Meta and Google were negligent and failed to warn users of the addictive dangers associated with its social media platforms. Compensatory damages were set at $3m with Meta assigned 70% and YouTube the remaining 30%. Deliberations had been ongoing since March 13 to decide whether the defendants put certain features into their apps that contributed to the social media addiction of a young woman identified only as KGM, or Kaley. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/25/meta-youtube-los-angeles-california-verdict.html

Doordash has announced an emergency relief program to ease the unexpected spike in fuel costs for its drivers. Through the end of next month, Doordash will offer 10% cash back to drivers, with higher payouts to those who drive more than 125 miles a week. It’s similar to efforts in 2022 when fuel prices shot up after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Drivers note that the temporary gesture won’t help a lot since many drive for multiple services. Many say they’ll more easily deal with the cost of fuel by only accepting orders that pay well or are close by. The freelance delivery business has been squeezing drivers for years, making them ever more reliant on tips. For example, DoorDash dropped its minimum base pay to $2 per order in 2021, setting off protests by drivers. In 2024, the company said the median order value was about $30 across the platform, with 75% of orders below $43 in value. https://www.npr.org/2026/03/24/nx-s1-5757447/gas-prices-doordash-drivers-uber-food-delivery
On this day in music history – March 25,
- In 1966, The Beatles took part in the photo shoot for the infamous “butcher cover” photo for the front of their next album, “Yesterday and Today” at Bob Whitaker’s studio in London. Public reaction to the photo of the four in white coats covered with raw meat and mutilated and butchered dolls was so bad that Capitol Records recalled 750k copies in order to replace the covers at a cost of $250k, wiping out initial profits from the release. All previous Beatles albums had immediately turned a profit. The few butcher cover albums that were sold or distributed to disk jockeys and reviewers, and even the ones that were recalled, covered over and re-distributed are now worth a lot of money.
