LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An Escondido man has been arrested in connection with the baseball bat attack in Oceanside that left a 20-year-old man critically injured on Saturday.  23-year-old Hunter Meyer was arrested at his place of work Monday and booked into San Diego Central jail for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.  https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/man-arrested-oceanside-baseball-bat-attack

Southern California Edison Customers including those in Temecula Valley will see a $56 credit that will automatically lower their April bill.  Southern California Gas Company customers will get an $86.60 credit.  SDGE customers will get about $81 in electric credits and $54 for natural gas thanks to the same California Climate Credit, which takes money from the state’s cap and trade program where polluting businesses buy permits on the carbon pollution they produce.  It’s administered through the California Public Utilities Commission.  The credits are distributed twice a year.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/03/25/utility-customers-getting-142-in-electric-gas-bill-credits-in-april/

Among the dozen San Diego area schools being recognized by the California Distinguished School program this year are La Paloma Elementary and Live Oak Elementary in the Fallbrook district.  336 schools were selected for honors statewide.  https://patch.com/california/san-diego/12-san-diego-county-schools-among-2025-ca-distinguished-schools

The Temecula City Council gave its blessing at last night’s meeting to a bike lane improvement project for the city’s three main traffic corridors.  Green pavement markings will be added to bike lanes along Winchester Road from Ynez to Rustic Glen; Rancho California Road from Moraga to Butterfield Stage; and Temecula Parkway from Wabash to Butterfield Stage.  The green pavement improves road safety by making bike lanes more visible and making drivers and cyclists more aware of each other. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temeculas-3-main-traffic-corridors-are-getting-safety-upgrades

Temecula’s newest splash pad at the Community Recreation Center pool at Ronald Reagan Sports Park opened last week just in time for that mini-heat wave we had a couple of days ago.  Typical hours for the water feature with brightly colored fixtures and splashing fountains will be 9a to noon and 1p to 6p Monday through Saturday.  It’s located at 30875 Vista Road. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-crc-splash-pad-opens-rave-reviews-what-know

A little rain snuck in this morning.  Pala had 2 hundredths of an inch.  Other places including Oceanside, Vista, Rainbow and Valley Center had about the same.  Other local communities including further inland and all of Southwest Riverside County either had none or just a trace.  Beginning today, we settle into at least a week of typical Spring weather.  The full forecast is coming up.  (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a.

SPORTS

In the NBA – Eight games last night.  The winners were Orlando, Detroit, Miami, New York, Houston, Memphis, Cleveland, and Oklahoma City, who’ve now won their 60th game this season against just 12 losses.  Six games tonight including the Clippers at New York and the Lakers at Indiana.  The Lakers have fallen to 5th place and are looking to break at three-game losing streak.  The Clippers are tied for 7th with Minnesota, but have a statistical advantage because they’ve played two fewer games than the Timberwolves.

In college hoops – In the NIT, Chattanooga edged Bradley 67-65.  And North Texas over Oklahoma State 61-59.  Purple Invitational semi-final winners were Illinois State and Cleveland State who will play each other today for the championship.  NIT quarterfinals continue today.  The NCAA tournament resumes tomorrow.

In the NHL – The Kings won their 9th game out of their last ten, beating the visiting Rangers 3-1.  Vegas remained atop the Pacific Division, ahead of the second-place Kings.  They beat Minnesota 5-1.  Other winners were Buffalo, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg, Colorado and Calgary.

In minor league hockey – the San Diego Gulls next game is tonight hosting San Jose.

In Major League Baseball – The Dodgers won the freeway series two games to one, beating the Angels in Anaheim 4-1 last night.  Twelve other teams played their final pre-season games yesterday.  The regular season began with two Dodgers/Cubs games last week in Tokyo.  It resumes for them and begins for everyone else tomorrow.  The Padres will host Atlanta. The Dodgers host Detroit.  The Angels are in Chicago for the season opener with the White Sox.  The White Sox had a record-breaking 121 losses last season.  And although betters think this year’s team won’t repeat that dubious distinction, they still believe the 2025 White Sox will be one of the worst teams in 35 years.  Some sports books have opened with the Sox expected to win fewer than 50 games this year. https://www.espn.com/espn/betting/story/_/id/44414982/sportsbooks-set-historically-low-white-sox-season-win-total

In Major League Soccer – San Diego hosts LAFC this Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium.  The Galaxy will host Orlando.

In the NFL – Anonymous sources say former Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Giants.  The deal is worth up to $21m with half of that guaranteed.   Wilson is 36 years old and been to the Pro Bowl ten times.  This will be his fourth team in five years.  The Giants have missed the playoffs 11 of the last 13 years.  Signing Wilson allows the Giants a chance to win right away while potentially developing a rookie quarterback.  Shedeur Sanders could fill that role if the Giants draft him.  They have the #3 overall pick in the next draft. https://apnews.com/article/russell-wilson-new-york-giants-dcc91318bb1bab84927233f367bc5b8a

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is Saturday at Rochester.

The President will announce new tariffs on auto imports at a media conference today at 1p.  It’s been hinted that those new tariffs could go into effect before April 2 when reciprocal tariffs on all countries that have their own import duties on U.S. goods go into effect.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/26/trump-could-sign-new-auto-tariffs-as-soon-as-wednesday-white-house-says.html

Dollar Tree is getting rid of its Family Dollar division, selling it to a pair of private equity companies for a fraction of what it paid a decade ago.  Pending regulatory approval which is expected next quarter, the Family Dollar chain will be sold for $1b.  Dollar Tree paid $9b for it in 2015.  Family Dollar has about 8k locations.  They announced the closure of more than 900 stores when the chain was put up for sale last year.  Dollar Tree is the smaller of the two chains at about 4,200 stores. Tariffs, competition from big box stores, and the budget struggles of its targeted customers have caused problems for Dollar Tree, Dollar General and the entire discount sector.  After 30 years of selling items for one dollar, Dollar Tree raised base prices to $1.25 in 2021.  Now it’s saying it may have to raise that base again.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/26/business/family-dollar-sale-dollar-tree/index.html

US Border agents are seizing more than twice as many chicken eggs coming in from Mexico at the San Ysidro and Otay crossings as they did at the same time last year.  Facing more than $8 per dozen prices here in the US, cartons are available south of the border for as little as $2.  Most people willingly surrender them to agents, not realizing the Department of Agriculture bans such imports due to the possible spread of disease.  Those who try to hide them when crossing do get fined.  Back in the 70s and 80s when fuel prices soared above a dollar for the first time in this country, people would go to Mexico and tank up at a Pemex station for 20 to 25 cents per gallon – even less for diesel.  The egg problem may soon resolve itself.  Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins said last week that wholesale egg prices fell 50% this month to just over $4 per dozen compared to more than twice that much in February. www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

President Trump today signed an executive order to extensively overhaul elections in the U.S.  It includes requiring documented proof of citizenship to register and vote in federal elections and a demand that all ballots be received by Election Day.  18 states, including California accept mail ballots after Election Day as long as they’re postmarked by then.  The order calls on states to work with federal agencies to share voter lists and prosecute election violations, and would pull federal funding from states where election officials don’t comply.  Trump has often claimed elections were rigged, even before the results were known, and has only somewhat moderated his objections to voting by mail, claiming it’s not secure and invites fraud.  Today’s order will likely face court challenges because states have broad authority to set their own election rules.  Voting rights group, the Brennan Center for Justice estimates that 9% of voting age citizens don’t have readily available proof of citizenship.  There are also concerns that married women who change their name won’t be able to register or vote because their birth certificates list their maiden names.  https://apnews.com/article/voting-elections-trump-executive-order-4e9edb53f47e61e241a43ceef8164022
