SPORTS

In the NBA – The Clippers beat the Knicks in New York 126-113.  Other winners were Washington, Toronto, Denver and Boston.  A buzzer-beater by LeBron James won it for the Lakers in Indianapolis last night 120-119.

LeBron James has signed a distribution deal with Amazon’s Wondery for his “Mind the Game” podcast.  It’ll be available on Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Fire TV channels, and Echo devices as well as YouTube.  It’ll be co-hosted by NBA Hall-of-Famer Steve Nash. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/digital/amazon-strikes-deal-lebron-james-podcast-mind-the-game-1236173102/

The Lakers announced yesterday that guard Jordan Goodwin is having his contract converted to a standard NBA two-year deal.  They also waived forward Cam Reddish.  The Lakers had tried to trade Reddish to Charlotte back in February.  But the deal fell through. 26-year old Goodwin only played in one preseason game due to injuries and was then sent down to the Lakers’ G League team before rejoining the Lakers in early February.  In his 19 games since then, he’s averaged 6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 47% from the floor. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44429147/sources-lakers-convert-goodwin-contract-waive-reddish

In college hoops – Illinois State won the Purple championship 79-68 over Cleveland State last night.  UC Irvine advanced to the NIT semi-finals with an 81-77 overtime win against UAB.  They’ll face North Texas on April 1.  The NCAA Sweet 16 begins tonight with two games each at Prudential Center in Newark and Chase Center in San Francisco.

In the NHL – Anaheim routed the visiting Bruins 6-2.  Dallas edged Edmonton 4-3.  New Jersey beat the Blackhawks in Chicago 5-3, eliminating them from playoff contention.  And Vancouver over the Islanders in New York, 5-2.  Winnipeg, with 102 points and leading the Western Conference have now cliched a playoff spot.

In minor league hockey – Last night, the San Diego Gulls beat the visiting San Jose Barracuda 4-3 in overtime.  Their next game is tomorrow hosting Tucson.

In Major League Baseball – Today is opening day of the regular season for all but two Major league teams.  The Dodgers and Cubs played two regular season games in Tokyo last week. The Padres open the season at home hosting Atlanta.  Michael King will start on the mound for San Diego with Chris Sale starting for Atlanta.  The Dodgers are in Detroit.  And the Angels are in Chicago to play the White Sox.

The Padres will air 10 regular-season Saturday games on CBS 8 and the CW for free this season as part of a new broadcast distribution agreement.  At least seven games will be broadcast on CBS 8, with the remaining games airing on The CW.  The first simulcast on CBS 8 will be the Padres vs. the Tampa Bay Rays on April 26. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/26/padres-announce-10-local-over-the-air-simulcasts/

In Major League Soccer – San Diego hosts LAFC this Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium.  The Galaxy will host Orlando.

In the NFL – Competition committee chairman Rich McKay said yesterday that kickoff return rates will rise to between 60% and 70% if owners approve a rule change placing touchbacks at the 35-yard line.  The proposal, along with several other rule and bylaw changes will be considered at the annual meetings in Palm Beach next week. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44417228/nfl-competition-committee-pitches-making-dynamic-kickoff-permanent

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell almost a half percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each down by a third of a percent.  Gold shot up on the Comex by well over $40 to $3,063 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 13 cents to $69.78 a barrel.

President Trump yesterday announced a 25% tariff on “all cars that are not made in the United States.” While intended to spur domestic production, it’s likely to cause price hikes and will be complicated to enforce because of intertwined supply chains with Canada and Mexico.  All domestic brands are partially or mostly made in those countries, while a number of foreign manufacturers do final assembly of their models here, though many components are foreign-sourced.  The new tariff will cause manufacturers to raise the price of most new vehicles.  That will send many buyers to the used car market, where prices will also rise, as they do when there are shortages in the new car market.  Though this shortage will be caused by the high cost of new cars.  Not surprisingly, some of today’s most active stocks were GM, Ford and Tesla. www.morningbrew.com

While there are no 100% US-sourced and assembled cars, Cars.com issues an annual American-Made Index report ranking 100 models out of 400 considered for assembly location, parts content, engine origin, transmission origin and use of US workforce.  Up until the most recent report for model year 2024, the top four models belonged to Tesla.  Only three are still in the 2024 top ten – the Model Y, Model S and Model X at #1, #4 and #9 respectively due to Tesla’s increased output from overseas factories.  Honda’s Passport is the second most-American model.  Volkswagen comes in at #3 with the ID 4.  Honda’s Odyssey and Ridgeline are #5 and #6.  The ubiquitous Toyota Camry is #7.  Jeep’s Gladiator is #8 and the Toyota Highlander is #10.  Cars.com’s inclusion of workforce in its calculations skews the rankings as they relate to tariffs, which are imposed only on vehicle assembly and content origin.  But it shows how some foreign-based manufacturers – Honda and Toyota in particular, are better situated to weather the tariff war than the traditional US Big Three.  https://www.cars.com/articles/2024-cars-com-american-made-index-which-cars-are-the-most-american-484903/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Supreme Court yesterday overturned a lower court ruling and upheld Biden-era federal regulations placing restrictions on kits for making “ghost guns”.  A lower court had ruled that federal gun-control law only covers weapons and not weapon parts, leaving a loophole for those wishing to build untraceable, or ghost guns.  Yesterday’s ruling allows requirements for serial numbers, background checks and age verification for sales of gun kits.  The 7-2 vote was a rare victory for gun control advocates. www.morningbrew.com

A growing number of foreign tourists are staying away from the United States, saying they are worried about feeling unwelcome or unsafe here, and are reluctant to support the economy of a country that may be destabilizing other nations.  The US tourism sector could lose around $64b in 2025 because of it.  The country most affected is Canada, the point of origin for more tourists coming into this country than any other.  The governments of US European allies, including Germany, the UK, Netherlands and Denmark have begun telling their citizens entering the US may now be “too difficult or unpredictable”.  The number of overseas visitors to the US fell by 2.4% in February compared with one year earlier.  Visitors from China declined by 11%, and they were some of the biggest spenders when they visited.  Tariffs are part of it because of the bad feelings they engender.  But increased visa red tape and other restrictions are involved as well.  Plus, there’s a general confusion over the perceived “No Entry” sign the US has recently erected with the traditional belief of US openness. https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202503/1330786.shtml

On this day in music history – March 27,

  • In 1965, The Supremes scored their fourth #1 single with “Stop! In the Name of Love” from their sixth album, “More Hits by The Supremes”.  The song was nominated for the 1966 Grammy for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance, losing to the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers on the Wall”.
  • In 1967, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were awarded the Ivor Novello award for “Michelle”, the most performed song of 1966 in Britain
  • In 1971, WNBC in New York City banned the Brewer & Shipley song “One Toke Over the Line” for its alleged drug reference.  Other stations followed suit.  The label said the “toke” that caused the controversy was short for token, as in train token.  Hence the line “Waitin’ outside at the railway station.  One toke over the line”.  At least that was the excuse.  Many groups were trying to work drug double entendre into their songs in the early 70’s.
  • On the same day, Bruce Springsteen & Friendly Enemies opened for The Allman Brothers at a venue in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Tickets were $4 … to see The Allman Brothers AND Bruce Springsteen.  Gotta love the 70s.
  • In 1972, Elvis Presley recorded his last major hit, “Burnin’ Love” which peaked at #2.
  • In 1979, Eric Clapton married George Harrison’s ex, Pattie Boyd Harrison.  She’d been the inspiration for his hit, “Layla” while married to Harrison.
  • In 1987, U2 performed on the roof of a store in downtown LA to make the video for “Where the Streets Have No Name”.  Police stopped the film shoot when it began to attract a crowd of thousands.
  • In 1991, New Kids on the Block’s Donnie Wahlberg was arrested after setting fire to carpets at a hotel in Louisville.  He plea-bargained the charge down to criminal mischief.
  • Always ahead of the curve, in 2015, Willie Nelson announced that he and his family were creating a brand of marijuana called Willie’s Reserve.  He planned a chain of stores for his signature brand and other strains to be grown with strict quality control.
