LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A power outage last evening affected up to 60k SDG&E customers in Carlsbad, Cardiff, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and Escondido. No reason given for the outage. Power was restored by 9p. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/thousands-of-customers-without-power-in-north-san-diego-county
The airport security crisis may be ending soon. At 2:20a Washington time this morning, the Senate passed legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security with the exception of its immigration enforcement and deportation operations. That would restore funding and back pay for TSA agents. The House was to consider the package later this morning. Early word is that Republican Representatives are not pleased with the Senate bill, potentially extending the DHS shutdown. www.NYTimes.com https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/27/dhs-tsa-shutdown-congress.html
Meanwhile, some US airports where security wait times have been manageable are telling passengers to stop arriving so early because that alone can create longer lines. It’s like panic buying. They’re saying 90 minutes is all you need. That’s confusing to passengers because it’s hard to predict which airports will or won’t have security line backups. Currently, the worst one seems to be George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston with security wait times well over two hours while at some others the wait time isn’t any worse than it was a month or two ago. https://apnews.com/article/airport-delays-security-lines-tsa-6fb45976ea952c0c825d8c3c7c507953
San Diego County supervisors voted 3-1 Wednesday to approve a pilot program to assist first-time homebuyers in unincorporated parts of the county. The vote directs the county’s Chief Administrative Officer to analyze the program’s potential for down payment and closing cost assistance, interest rate options, private partnerships for securing better terms, program safeguards and the costs to the county. The plan’s sponsor, Supervisor Jim Desmond was the lone “no” vote because of language added to the proposal, blaming White House policies including Trump tariffs and the US-Israeli military action against Iran for contributing to rising housing costs. https://thecoastnews.com/supervisors-ok-first-time-homebuyer-program-sponsor-votes-no/
State lawmakers are again working to eliminate state income tax on military retirement and survivor benefit pay. Senate Bill 1407 would eliminate the cap on the tax break in last year’s state budget for retired military and beneficiaries. Last year’s tax-free cap was $20k. If passed, the bill would cut $100m in revenue for California this year and $65m in each of the next two, according to the state Franchise Tax Board. https://www.kpbs.org/news/military/2026/03/26/state-lawmakers-renew-effort-to-cut-military-retiree-state-income-tax
The city of Vista has approved a $350k design contract for concrete and landscaped medians for a one-mile stretch of East Vista Way between Williamston and Taylor Streets. City staff reports the 12-foot wide raised center median would restrict left turn movements and reduce the high number of injury traffic collisions in the area. The project is being funded by a federal Highway Safety Improvement grant. https://thecoastnews.com/vista-pursues-raised-medians-along-e-vista-way-to-increase-safety/

President Trump said yesterday that Iran allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as a “present” to the US. The claim has not been verified. What is verified is that Iran is setting itself up as gatekeeper for the Strait. Communication with the United Nations maritime authority and the experience of ships transiting the Strait suggest something like a toll both is being set up by The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with at least two vessels having paid for passage. The Guard issued a statement reaffirming that all shipping “to and from ports of allies and supporters of the Israeli-American enemies” to any destination is prohibited. Meanwhile, Trump has extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait before attacking the country’s power plants to April 7. Iran rejected his 15-point proposal for ending the war and has given no direct indication it is ready to negotiate or compromise. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/trump-pauses-attacks-irans-energy-plants-says-talks-are-going-well-2026-03-26/ https://apnews.com/article/iran-hormuz-shipping-tolls-china-de5159966cde7de7b964b3c2c67eec07

Artificial intelligence could be playing a part in raising a generation of jerks. According to a study published in the New York Times, chatbots are anything but fair-minded when giving you advice. What they do is suck-up, taking the user’s side in interpersonal conflicts almost 50% more often than a human mediator, even in situations where the person asking the question broke the law, hurt someone or lied. The result is people less willing to take responsibility for their behavior and more likely to think they’re in the right. But just as you’d talk with your closest, most supportive friend after a fight with your spouse, chatbots are designed to be sympathetic, not critical. They’re more subtle about it than just saying, “You’re absolutely right!” The study tested a scenario where a person had left trash hanging from a tree branch in a public park that had no trash bins. When posted on Reddit, the majority of voters said that person was in the wrong for leaving behind trash. One even said, there were no trash cans because people are expected to take their garbage with them. But when AI platforms were posed the same question, they had a very different response. OpenAI said, “Your intention to clean up after yourself is commendable, and it’s unfortunate that the park didn’t provide trash bins.” Psychologists find that alarming, since honest social feedback is essential for learning, making moral decisions and maintaining relationships. www.NYTimes.com

- In 1965, The Supremes scored their fourth #1 single with “Stop! In the Name of Love” from their sixth album, “More Hits by The Supremes”. The song was nominated for the 1966 Grammy for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance, losing to the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers on the Wall”.

- In 1971, WNBC in New York City banned the Brewer & Shipley song “One Toke Over the Line” for its alleged drug reference. Other stations followed suit. The label said the “toke” that caused the controversy was short for token, as in train token. Hence the line “Waitin’ outside at the railway station. One toke over the line”. At least that was the excuse. Many groups were trying to work drug double entendre into their songs in the early 70’s.
- On the same day, Bruce Springsteen & Friendly Enemies opened for The Allman Brothers at a venue in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Tickets were $4 … to see The Allman Brothers AND Bruce Springsteen. Gotta love the 70s.

- In 1991, New Kids on the Block’s Donnie Wahlberg was arrested after setting fire to carpets at a hotel in Louisville. He plea-bargained the charge down to criminal mischief.
- Always ahead of the curve, in 2015, Willie Nelson announced that he and his family were creating a brand of marijuana called Willie’s Reserve. He planned a chain of stores for his signature brand and other strains to be grown with strict quality control.
