LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The San Diego County Coroner has released information about a nine-year-old girl who died hours after undergoing a procedure at a Vista dental office.  She’d been under general anesthesia March 18, spent time in a recovery room and was later discharged and taken home by her mother.  She slept during the drive home and was carried to bed where family checked on her throughout the day.  She was found unresponsive during a check.  A 9-1-1 call resulted in her transport to Rady Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The dental office is cooperating with the county medical examiner’s investigation. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/medical-examiners-office-girl-9-dies-after-procedure-at-vista-dental-office

A helicopter experiencing engine problems made an emergency landing Sunday afternoon just north of Escondido.  Both people on board the private aircraft were uninjured after it touched down a little before 2:20p on North Centre City Parkway near Jesmond Dene Road.  The helicopter landed in an area where North Centre City Parkway runs next to and parallel to Interstate 15.  The response caused traffic issues on the freeway for several hours.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/30/helicopter-makes-emergency-landing-on-roadway-near-escondido/

A proposal to designate Oceanside’s Ivey Ranch Park as a state or national historic site has divided park users and local Native Americans who see the property as part of their heritage.  More than 50 people addressed the Oceanside City Council when it considered the proposal last Wednesday.  Most of the speakers were employees, clients and volunteers at the park’s equestrian center who fear the designation could end the center’s therapeutic riding programs for people with disabilities. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/31/at-tribes-urging-oceanside-to-consider-historic-designation-for-ivey-ranch-park/

President Trump and Governor Newsom don’t agree on much.  But the two are united in efforts to make sure the power California Coastal Commission doesn’t get in the way of rebuilding after the recent LA wildfires.  The commission consists of 12 voting commissioners and three non-voting members. The governor, Senate Rules Committee and the Assembly speaker each appoint four voting commissioners.

Bottom of Form  The New York Times reported the Trump administration threatened to withhold wildfire rebuilding aid unless the state defunds the commission.  And Democrats in the Legislature are trying to reduce the commission’s “authority over housing redevelopment.”  Newsom even defended Trump ally Elon Musk, when the commission denied a SpaceX request to launch more rockets from Vandenberg Air Force Base, which actually is federal property.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/03/30/trump-and-newsom-unite-over-coastal-commission/

There were a couple of small SDG&E power outages locally this morning.  One in north Vista caused by a traffic accident at about 7a affected a couple hundred customers.  That one was expected to have been fixed by now.  Another in Pala at 8a may have just affected just one or two homes.  https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

Only a few areas including La Jolla, Palomar Mountain, Ramona and Lake Wohlford had more than a tenth of an inch of rain last night and this morning.  Mesa Grande and Santa Ysabel had the most at just over a quarter inch each.  Just 3 hundredths of an inch in Pala and a trace or less in Temecula.  It’ll be cool and windy the next three days with a couple of chances of light rain before a clear and warmer weekend.  The full forecast is coming up. BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow was up two tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a third of a percent.  The Nasdaq was off by 1.1%.  Gold traded $38.80 higher on the Comex at $3,153.10 an ounce – another new high.  And the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $2.35 a barrel to $71.71.

Today is the end of 2025’s first quarter and things have not gone well on Wall Street.  The S&P 500 just finished its fifth down week in the past six and the tech-heavy Nasdaq exchange is officially in correction territory – down more than 10% this year.  Stocks are off to their worst start of a year since 2020.  Meanwhile, stocks in Europe and China are surging.  The European Stoxx 600 is outperforming the S&P by over 16% – the biggest gap ever, and the MSCI China Index is up more than 30% since August.  With major tariffs expected to be announced by the White House on Wednesday, the second quarter isn’t looking any better so far.  www.morningbrew.com

Economists at Goldman Sachs have raised the likelihood of a recession to 35% as a result of the tax-like impact of higher tariffs.  Wall Street’s best-known investment bank raised its prediction for the next two quarters from the 20% likelihood it had advised clients as recently as last week and for the second time in less than a month, saying investors underestimate the risk higher import duties will have on the economy. https://fortune.com/2025/03/31/goldman-sachs-economy-shrinking-trump-tariffs-recession/

Volvo is getting back to basics with a surprise switch in CEOs.  Hakan Samuelsson is back in charge.  He’d led the Swedish auto maker from 2012 to 2022 during which he revitalized the brand and took the company public in 2021.  He also built a Volvo assembly plant in South Carolina.  A move that could prove crucial to the automaker when promised tariffs take effect.  Samuelsson replaces Jim Rowan, who joined the company in 2022 with no car industry experience.  He’d previously been head of Dyson.  74-year-old Samuelsson has been appointed for a two-year term while the company searches for a long-term successor. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/volvo-goes-back-car-industry-basics-with-surprise-ceo-switch-2025-03-31/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “A Working Man” debuted in first place, selling $15.2m worth of tickets – just a million more than “Snow White” in its second weekend.  Snow White dropped an unusually-high 66% from its debut last weekend.  Four other new films filled the #3 through 6 places; “The Chosen: Last Supper” with $11.5m, “The Woman in the Yard” with $9.4m, “Death of a Unicorn” with $5.8m, and the 4k restoration of “Princess Mononoke” with $4m on just 330 screens, for the highest per-screen average of the weekend.  Total attendance for this weekend’s top ten movies was just slightly more than the week before, which is close to average for the year so far. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W13/

Actor Richard Chamberlain, who came to prominence in the 1960’s as TV’s “Dr. Kildare” and then became the king of TV miniseries with ratings giants “Shogun” and “The Thorn Birds” died Saturday in Hawai’i at the age of 90.  He made some movies, including “The Three Musketeers”, but his real success was on television and on Broadway, including a 1993 revival of “My Fair Lady”.  Chamberlain died of complications following a stroke. https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/richard-chamberlain-dead-dies-shogun-thorn-birds-1236351970/

On this day in music history – March 31,

  • 1949, RCA Victor introduced the 45-rpm single record.  In development for nine years, the format was intended to compete with the 33 1/3 rpm long-play record introduced by Columbia a year earlier.  Both new formats offered better fidelity and longer playing time than the 78 rpm discs then in use.
  • In 1958, Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” was released.  It entered the charts six weeks later and peaked at #8.  The song’s original lyrics referred to Johnny as a “colored boy”.  Berry changed it to “country boy” to ensure it would get played on white radio stations.  The prevalent color barrier at the time probably explains why it only made #8 on the charts, even though it has become an early rock & roll classic.
  • In 1962, The Beatles played their first show in the South of England at The Subscription Room.  Tickets cost about 70 cents.
  • In 1967, Jimi Hendrix set fire to a guitar on stage for the first time at The Astoria in London.  That same burned guitar sold at auction for 280k pounds Sterling in 2008
  • In 1972, The Beatles Official Fan Club closed, two years after the group disbanded and three years after The Beatles Monthly magazine ceased production.

  • In 1994, Madonna appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman”.  The network had to delete 13 offending words before the show could air.  On the show, she handed Dave a pair of her panties and told him to sniff them.  He declined and put them in a desk drawer.
  • In 1995 Jimmy Page avoided being stabbed by a fan who later told police he wanted to kill Page because of the Satanic music he played.
  • In 2010, Cher’s first child, Chaz Bono, who’d been born Chastity Bono asked a judge to formally change his name and gender following sex change surgery he’d had the previous year.
  • In 2019, rapper Nipsye Hussle died after being shot multiple times outside his clothing store in South LA.

  • In 1937, jazz trumpeter Herb Alpert who had several 60’s hits with The Tijuana Brass.  He went on to co-found A&M Records.  He’s the A.  Jerry Moss is the M.
  • In 1942, session guitarist Hugh McCracken who appeared on recordings by Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Roberta Flack, The Monkees, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin and dozens more.  He declined an invitation by Paul McCartney to join Wings because he was too busy with session work.
