In the NBA – Yesterday’s winners were Portland, New York, Milwaukee, Orlando, Chicago, Golden State with Steph Curry scoring a season-high 52 points, and in double overtime, Minnesota over Denver 140-139. The win was thanks to Nickell Alexander-Walker hitting two of three free throws with less than a second left, and in spite of Nikola Jokic’s career-best 61-point night. https://www.espn.com/nba/game/_/gameId/401705668/timberwolves-nuggets

In the West, the 2nd through 7th place teams are all within five games of each other and have yet to clinch. The Lakers are 4th with a 46 and 29 record. The Padres and second-year player Jackson Merrill have agreed to a nine-year contract extension beginning next year that will guarantee the 21-year-old $135m. It has no opt-outs and includes a club option for $21m in 2035. Merrill gets a player option if he finishes in the top five in MVP voting in any year of the contract. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/04/02/padres-jackson-merrill-agrees-to-nine-year-135-million-contract/
The Padres dodged a bullet by trading Jurickson Profar last season. He tested positive for a banned substance and had been banned by the league. He’ll miss the next 80 games with Atlanta. Profar says he did not knowingly take the drug in question, but takes full responsibility and accepts MLB’s decision. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/04/01/tom-krasovic-positive-test-shows-padres-were-wise-to-let-jurickson-profar-walk/

President Trump is set to unveil the closely guarded details of what he calls “Liberation Day” today. He’s promised it will generate tariff revenues that will go towards U.S. tax cuts and deficit reduction, and give a boost to U.S. manufacturing. But some manufacturers will be hurt by higher costs for imported goods and materials and many economists are skeptical that the tariffs will generate as much revenue as the President claims. Not to mention, tariffs are paid by those who buy imported goods, with importers likely to pass that cost on to U.S. consumers at the retail level. Yale Budget Lab estimates proposed new tariffs could cost the average American consumer $2,700 to $3,400 per year. The uncertainty over the President’s scheme has been depressing stocks lately, leading the S&P 500 to have its worst quarter since 2022 with consumer confidence now at a 12-year low. So far, the President has imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, Chinese imports and some items from Canada and Mexico. He’s also threatened, delayed, or withdrawn tariffs on many other goods – often in very vague terms. https://www.npr.org/2025/04/02/nx-s1-5345802/trump-tariffs-liberation-day
The original law to ban TikTok in the U.S. if its Chinese parent company doesn’t sell it off could go into effect this Saturday – the deadline extension date set by President Trump. But that deadline date extending the original sell-by date doesn’t seem to be set in stone and the President has said it could be extended further if needed. Potential bidders have come forward, but no deal for the social media platform is imminent. The call for divestiture was made on the grounds of national security, since Chinese companies are subject to providing the Chinese government with any information they possess. That would include data about U.S. subscribers to TikTok. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tiktok-bytedance-78f69ce5ca022e4c01f913ed9753b9ef
