LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Following new information from an autopsy report, Monday’s discovery of a body on an empty lot in the 1200 block of Hacienda Drive in Vista is now being investigated as a homicide.  Though no obvious trauma was observed at the scene Monday, the coroner’s office found a brain bleed that may have been caused by head trauma.  Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Sheriffs at 858 285 6330 or call Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/homicide-investigation-underway-in-vista-following-autopsy-findings/509-ca653dd6-d56d-49cc-b137-758b20dccbdb

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Rainbow Canyon Road south of Temecula Tuesday afternoon just after 12:30p.  No other vehicles were involved.  The victim has been identified as 32-year old Francisco Quintana Salazar from Vista.  The road was closed most of Tuesday afternoon for investigation. https://patch.com/california/temecula/harley-rider-idd-temecula-crash-21-year-old-san-diego-county-man

According to the Valley Roadrunner, the 17,000-square-foot former Rite-Aid at Valley Center and Cole Grade Roads in Valley Center will not be returning to commercial use.  Instead, it has been quietly purchased for $4.2m by GridCore Dynamics, a Delaware-based energy infrastructure firm, to serve as a “Boutique Battery Energy Storage System” (B-BESS).  While most battery storage facilities in San Diego County are sprawling outdoor complexes of white shipping containers and other equipment, GridCore is utilizing a newer “Adaptive Reuse” model.  By housing the lithium-ion stacks inside an existing concrete-tilt-up building, the company can bypass the aesthetic objections that often stall outdoor utility projects as well as much of the red tape in building from scratch.  GridCore chose the former Rite-Aid for its proximity to the existing Valley Center power substation.  GridCore promises a “zero emissions” cooling system for its new B-BESS.   https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/energy-firm-acquires-former-rite-aid-site-for-stealth-battery-storage-project/

The high temperature in Pala will be a little on the cool side today, jumping into the mid-80s tomorrow through Easter weekend.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Former Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer is trying to revive his big-league career after serving a 194-game suspension for violation of MLB’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policies.  He was never charged with a crime and civil claims were settled out of court.  Bauer has signed with the minor league Long Island Ducks and will pitch opening night, April 21.  The right-hander was released by the LA Dodgers in 2023 and pitched in Japan last year. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48378454/trevor-bauer-signs-long-island-ducks-us-return

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm open their season on the road tonight at Ontario.

In soccer – FIFA has once again raised prices for many of the games in the upcoming World Cup tournament coming to the U.S., Canada and Mexico in June and July.  The latest sales window kicked off yesterday with 40 of the 104 games now costing more than in the last window.  The most expensive “Category 1” ticket for the final will now cost $10,990.  That’s most of the lower two levels at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the final game of the tournament will be held and it’s $2,200 more than during the last sales window.  FIFA has been heavily criticized for its first-ever use of dynamic pricing with European fans calling the prices “exorbitant” and filing formal complaints with the European Commission to get the soccer body to lower prices.  https://www.npr.org/2026/04/01/nx-s1-5770564/fifa-world-cup-ticket-prices

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down slightly.  The Dow fell a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each off by a tenth.  Gold traded down $121 on the Comex, at $4,692.10 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $10.46 to $110.58 a barrel.  That’s the highest it’s been since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when it peaked at an all-time high of just over $116.  It also exceeds the current price of the international benchmark, Brent crude, which is unusual.  Brent is currently at $107.76 a barrel.

Today’s Labor Department report shows a decline in applications for unemployment benefits despite a softening labor market and rising energy costs.  The number of Americans applying for benefits last week fell by 9k to 202k from the previous week.  That rate has been consistently between 200k and 250k since the U.S. economy emerged from the pandemic.  Employers have been hesitant to hire over uncertainty about tariffs and many large companies either have, or plan to have layoffs.  The March jobs report is due out tomorrow. https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-e8ebc2999e7e2d9d02538ee455d52683

Starbucks hopes to further a turnaround by offering baristas and shift managers quarterly bonuses of $300 if their stores meet set targets.  This is the flipside of CEO Brian Niccol’s efforts to revive the company by improving the customer experience.  The bonus program begins in July.  Those working at union locations will probably not get the bonuses until management and the union reach a collective bargaining agreement.  Those negotiations have been at a standstill for more than a year.  About 5% of U.S. Starbucks locations are unionized. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/02/starbucks-to-award-bonuses-to-baristas-expand-tipping.html

The FDA has approved a GLP-1 weight loss pill from Eli Lilly called Foundayo.  It comes just two months after the approval of Novo Nordisk’s competing Wegovy pill.   The once-a-day Foundayo pill is not as effective as the company’s weekly Zepbound shot, which uses a different formulation.  But its convenience is expected to make it a major milestone for the Indianapolis-based drug maker.  It’ll begin shipping from Lilly’s direct-to-consumer platform on Monday and be available at pharmacies soon after.  Those with insurance coverage could pay as little as $25 a month with a coupon.  Those paying out of pocket will pay between $149 and $349 depending on the dose.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/01/eli-lilly-glp-1-pill-foundayo-approved-for-obesity.html

Mortgage rates rose for the fifth straight week.  The current rate being quoted by Freddie Mac is 6.46% – up from just under 6% six weeks ago.  On a $400k loan, that’s about a $115 higher monthly payment.  https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

“The Super Mario Galaxy Move” is set to drop in theaters tomorrow.  It’s expected to be the biggest hit of the year, far surpassing Pixar’s “Hoppers” and Amazon MGM’s “Project Hail Mary”.  It also highlights an emerging trend – the theater dominance of PG-rated movies.  Beginning in 2024, PG-rated movies out-grossed any other rating for the first time in decades.  Five of the top six releases that year were PG.  Last year was no different.  What that means is that kids age 12 and under are becoming the most important movie customers.  A study by National Research Group last year found that no generational group wanted to watch movies on the big screen, as opposed to at home, more than Gen Alpha – defined as those born between 2010 and 2025 … though not very many one-year-olds are that discerning about watching movies.   https://apnews.com/article/family-movies-super-mario-galaxy-8d9623e3d2229c4bfd4bc548f31f0ffe

Following criticism by the grandson of the founder of Reese’s candies that it had switched to cheaper ingredients, Hershey’s said yesterday that it will return to classic recipes for all Reese’s products starting next year.   Some Hershey’s and Reese’s products, like mini Easter eggs are now made with a coating that contains less chocolate.  Brad Reese ignited the controversy with a public open letter to Hershey’s corporate brand manager on Valentine’s Day.  Brad’s grandfather, H.B. Reese founded the company in 1919.  His six sons sold it to Hershey’s in 1963. https://apnews.com/article/hershey-reeses-chocolate-peanut-butter-cups-recipe-1c17247e190eb03952e1c197b6f872ce
