United Airlines has increased its checked baggage fee by $10 because of increased fuel costs. And the cost of flying by private charter is up 20%. Some private operators are also tacking on war risk premiums for flights in the Persian Gulf. Private flight contracts have always included variable fuel cost clauses. Larger jet operators are slower to pass along fuel costs in the form of ticket price increases because they buy in bulk and need to avoid alienating customers. Most private flight customers can absorb the extra costs, though they may seek smaller, less expensive planes. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/03/private-jet-travel-costs-rise-fuel-prices.html
It’s a great time to be a plastics manufacturer. Not so great if you use plastics, which is just about everybody. Plastics companies like Dow Chemical are running factories flat out and will continue to do so as long as there’s supply chain disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. Natural gas is an essential part of making plastics. American plastics manufacturers don’t have to worry about natural gas shipments. We have lots of it domestically. Thanks to decreased output from foreign manufacturers, Dow has raised the price of polyethylene by 30 cents per pound. That’s the soft, flexible material used in sandwich bags, most liquid bottles and food service gloves. Polypropylene, the denser material used in car parts, bottle caps and medical supplies is now in demand overseas, creating a new export market for domestic manufacturers, like Houston-based LyondellBasell. After two years of decline, their stock is up 84% this year. But everyone who uses plastics is taking a hit that will eventually have to be passed on to consumers. And experts say that even if the Strait of Hormuz opened up immediately, it could take nine months for supply chains to return to baseline. www.morningbrew.com

The faith-based “A Great Awakening” opened in 6th place with $2.1m on 1,200 screens. The total for this weekend was double that of last weekend and the biggest movie-going weekend so far this year with the top ten films collectively selling $192m worth of tickets. Two thirds of that was Super Mario Galaxy. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W14/
Samsung is discontinuing its texting app as of July. Many owners of Samsung phones have already received a message recommending that they switch to Google Messages, “to maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android.” Instructions send you to Google Play to download and install the new app which is promised to retain and remember everything from the user’s Samsung account. Samsung says the change will give users the latest AI features from Google’s Gemini and the ability to share higher quality photos between Android and Apple iOS devices through RCS-enabled messages. https://apnews.com/article/samsung-android-messages-google-gemini-823b3eb598611b127e66008ee4390da6
With astronauts on the way to the moon for the first time in 54 years, there are some differences. For the first time, there are four astronauts in the capsule. Apollo 17, and all previous Apollo moon launches had three. All the computing power on board the last moon shot would now fit in your wrist health wearable. This is the first time smart phones are being allowed in space. They didn’t exist 50 years ago, nor did TikTok, Instagram or the internet for that matter. The Artemis II mission is also the first time NASA is allowing the public to track the mission using this link. By the way, earlier today, Artemis II broke a record set by Apollo 13 fifty-six year ago as humans traveled farther from Earth than ever before. The current mission beat the old record of 248,665 miles by about 4,100 miles. Today’s wakeup call for the astronauts included a message from late Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, who said “Welcome to my neighborhood … don’t forget to enjoy the view.” https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis-ii/arow/?campaign_id=9&emc=edit_nn_20260404&instance_id=173590&nl=the-morning®i_id=95033868&segment_id=217727&user_id=69c872dd14574befc57c2e10ec8317c7
