BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell four tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 declined three tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by a half percent.  Gold was just about flat at $4,685 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up another $2.88 to $115.29 a barrel.

Today’s stock slump is due to concerns over President Trump’s 5p deadline for Iran to end the Strait of Hormuz blockade or “a whole civilization will die tonight.”  A former State Department advisor now with the International Crisis Group says that remark could be interpreted as a threat to commit genocide – war crime under U.S. and International law.   https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/iran-defiant-eve-trumps-ceasefire-deadline-2026-04-07/

Amazon has reached a deal with the US Post Office to continue delivering more than 1b packages annually for the e-commerce giant.  That’s about 80% of its current package volume with USPS.   Amazon will still continue to expand its in-house delivery service, but not enough to rival USPS’s address-by address reach. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2026/04/07/amazon-post-office-delivery-deal/89498680007/

Delta Airlines has joined United and Jet Blue in raising its checked bag fee by $10 to help offset the higher cost of fuel.  But it isn’t just the price of jet fuel that has airlines concerned.  It’s whether they can get enough of it.  The price of jet fuel has just about doubled since the start of the war with Iran.  The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz is choking supplies and driving up the price of fuel even further.  The U.S. produces a lot of jet fuel, so supplies aren’t as exposed here as in Europe and parts of Asia.  But carriers that fill up here might have trouble getting refueled on international flights.  Airlines are preparing for oil to stay above $100 a barrel through 2027 by discontinuing some flights now.  Fuel is generally an airline’s biggest expense after labor. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/07/iran-war-jet-fuel-airlines.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

According to Reuters News Service, Internal data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shows that ICE arrested more than 800 people over the past year as a result of tips shared by TSA.  That’s far more than what was previously publicly known.  TSA supplied ICE with records on more than 31k travelers for possible immigration enforcement.  The agencies have always shared information in times of national security threat.  They began focusing on routine immigration arrests as part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation effort. https://www.reuters.com/world/ice-arrested-more-than-800-people-after-tips-us-airport-security-agency-2026-04-07/

This summer’s Wireless Festival in London has been cancelled after headliner Kanye West was refused entry into the UK.  West has caused outrage in Britain for several years of antisemitic, racist and pro-Nazi comments.  Sponsors had already been dropping out of the Wireless Festival because of it.  All tickets sold will be refunded. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gxk3kxjr0o

According to Axios, the number of bars and restaurants establishing themselves as phone-free environments is growing.  At least eleven states now have individual restaurants or bars with some form of phone restriction all the way up to confiscating your phone when you check your coat in order to create a more intimate setting, better focus on food, and protect patron privacy.  They’re mostly high-end establishments.  But even some Chick-Fil-A locations are offering free ice cream as an incentive for turning over your phone while eating.  And it’s not like patrons are rebelling.  Talker Research says 63% of Gen Zers intentionally disconnect when they dine.  57% of millennials do so.  Data from Consumer Affairs shows Americans spend an average of 4 ½ hours a day on their phones with a significant portion involving social networking and texting during meals. www.morningbrew.com
