LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Fire broke out just after noon yesterday in the 1600 block of Rainbow Valley Boulevard, prompting evacuations, which were lifted just after 1p, when the fire’s forward progress had been halted at less than two acres.  The cause was determined to have been a burn pile that got out of hand.  https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/north-county/rainbow-brush-fire/

One person was transported to Palomar Medical Center in critical condition after a fight in Fallbrook last evening.  It happened in the 1300 block of South Mission Road.  No arrests were made.  One person initially detained was later released after failing to cooperate with investigators.  Deputies are now seeking surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant to continue their investigation. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/04/02/news/individual-critically-injured-in-fight-in-fallbrook-authorities-seek-video-evidence/81606.html

A man suspected of killing a woman in her Oceanside home Tuesday was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with SWAT officers.  Oceanside police responded to 9-1-1 calls from neighbors in the 2300 block of Fallingleaf Road around 9a to find the woman unresponsive and the man barricaded inside the home.  Officers eventually arrested the man, who had multiple self-inflicted, life-threatening injuries, according to the police report.  No names have been released and no one else was apparently involved. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/swat-team-circles-home-in-oceanside/4006674/?amp=1

The California Supreme Court has put a temporary stop to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s probe into alleged election fraud.  He’d seized 656k ballots from the 2025 special election in which an approved ballot measure re-drew election boundaries, favoring Democrats.  Bianco is a Republican candidate for governor in this year’s mid-term elections.  https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/california-supreme-court-halts-gop-sheriffs-voter-fraud-investigation-rcna267299

A long-promised $45m wave pool project is once again moving forward in Oceanside.  The pool in a 92-acre mixed use development north of Highway 76 and east of Foussat Road on the site of the former Valley Drive-In Theater and swap meet is planned to be open in time for the 2028 Olympics.  Specific technology for the wave pool has not been revealed, but it’s expected to be pneumatic like Palm Springs Surf Club and others.  The $45m project has been mired in years of lawsuits and other delays.  The 3-acre pool is one component of the project that will eventually include up to 667 all-electric, solar powered homes, a 300-room resort hotel and 134k square feet of retail and office space. https://www.surfer.com/news/oceanside-45m-wave-pool-ocean-kamp

SPORTS

In the NBA – Last night, the Clippers lost 128-110 to the visiting Thunder who put a lock on being the #1 seed for the playoffs.  It’s the third straight season Oklahoma City has been the Western Conference #1 seed.  Only the Bulls and Warriors have ever recorded more wins in a two-year span.  The Thunder currently have 132.  They’re only the fifth team in NBA history to have the league’s best record and win back-to-back championships.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48435203/okc-locks-no-1-seed-home-court-postseason

On Tuesday, the Pirates gave rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin a nine-year contract extension worth $140m.  It’s the largest guarantee in Pirates history.  Griffin is the first 19-year old position player since Juan Soto in 2018.  The contract buys out three potential years of free agency for him.   https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48428020/sources-konnor-griffin-agrees-9-year-140m-deal-pirates

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, after an initial downturn, the ceasefire rally resumed, though at a much more subdued pace.  The Dow and S&P 500 were each up a half percent.  The Nasdaq gained six tenths.  Gold shot up almost $40 to $4,816.60 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained back $3.19, trading at $97.60 a barrel.

In spite of concerns over whether Tuesday’s last-minute, double-sided ceasefire in Iran would hold, stocks had their best day in a year.  The Dow closed up 2.8% and the S&P 500 gained 2 ½%.  It was party mode for the energy sector as oil futures dropped $10 a barrel.  But the ceasefire is a fragile one so far.  Shortly after its announcement, Israel attacked Beirut, killing at least 182 people and saying Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire.  Pakistan, which served as mediator for the ceasefire says Lebanon was part of the deal.  Vice-President J.D. Vance called it a “legitimate misunderstanding”.  Meanwhile, President Trump is sending mixed messages about the Strait of Hormuz.  He’s touting the ceasefire after saying the agreement hinged on Iran “agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.”  As of this morning, media outlets say there is little evidence that the waterway has reopened.  Some are even reporting Iran has added new mines to the Strait.  www.morningbrew.com

The U.S. maker of beer brands Modelo and Corona, Constellation Brands has withdrawn its previous fiscal 2028 outlook and replaced it with a forecast of “subdued” demand even though it beat fourth quarter expectations.  The beer division continues to be Constellation’s biggest source of growth.  But the company’s overall net sales for the current fiscal year have decreased 3%.  Constllation is getting a new CEO next week. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/08/constellation-brands-stz-q4-2026-earnings.html

The Selective Service System plans to automatically register eligible American men between the ages of 18 and 26 for possible U.S. military draft by the end of this year.  The requirement was passed by Congress last year as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.  The White House says President Trump wants to keep his “options on the table”.  There has not been a military draft since the Vietnam War was winding down in 1973.  Men that age have been required to register themselves for possible conscription since a law was passed during the Carter administration in 1980.  In 2024, 81% of all eligible men did register – a three percent drop from the previous year.  The proposal for automatic registration was submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs about a month after the U.S. and Israel began the war against Iran.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/09/military-draft-registration-automatic-iran-war.html

Ford is recalling more than 400k vehicles because the windshield wiper arms could break.  Owners of 2021 through 2023 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, plus a range of F-series Super Duty trucks in 2022 and ’23 will be notified by mail next week.  Once a fix is found, dealers will inspect and replace wiper arms at no charge.  https://apnews.com/article/ford-recall-windshield-wipers-safety-nhtsa-6bda75db45074cba43f6be2051abc4ed

Think about this.  You’re probably used to Googling for answers to small facts, figures and other questions.  Millions and millions of people do it every day – usually multiple times a day.  These days, that means getting a response from Google A.I. overview.  A recent analysis found Google A.I. overview to be accurate nine times out of ten.  90% accurate … that’s pretty good.  A lot better than a Magic 8 Ball.  But it still amounts to tens of millions of incorrect answers every hour.   www.nytimes.com

Is it progress, or another step towards climatic Armageddon?  Statewide bans and moratoriums on data centers that consume more than 20 megawatts of power are either in effect or being proposed in ten states.  Activists in Ohio are collecting signatures to put an initiative on the ballot in November.  Towns and cities are considering their own bans as new projects hit strong resistance from planning groups across the country.  Although they bring new jobs, a study says large data centers can be environmental hazards because they create heat islands within a 6-mile radius.  In a survey by American Home Shield, 88% of American consumers report higher utility bills compared with a year ago.  14% reported living in areas near major data centers with 94% of that group saying their utility bills increased over the past year.  Their electric bills rose an average of 15% from the year before while the national average was 11%.  And their monthly electric bills are $68 higher than the national average of $187.  On Monday, 13 bullets were fired at the home of an Indianapolis city councilmember who recently supported the construction of a data center in his district.  No one was hurt.  A note left behind read “No Data Centers”.   In Imperial County, east of San Diego, after a five-hour meeting and over the objections of dozens of speakers, supervisors this week voted to combine several parcels to clear the way for the largest data center in California – 1m square feet, consuming 330 megawatts.  Developers say it won’t need an environmental study because most of it is zoned for industrial use.  Unions support it.  But thousands of Imperial County residents object to what has become a pattern of large commercial projects that overpromise and under-deliver local benefits while understating environmental impacts. https://inewsource.org/2026/04/08/california-data-center-nimby-imperial-county/ www.morningbrew.com https://www.ahs.com/home-matters/cost-savers/utility-budget-statistics/
