In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Giants 4-1 yesterday in San Francisco. Freddie Fermin hit a two-run homer and Yu Darvish got the win, pitching five scoreless innings before giving up the game’s only run for the Giants in the bottom of the 6th. The Angels beat the Dodgers in Anaheim 7-4. It’s their fourth freeway series vicotory over the Dodgers this season. That puts the Padres just a game behind the first-place Dodgers. Both series continue today.
Major League Baseball today nixed any repeat of plans they had last year for starting the year’s World Series early if both league championship series ended by Game 5. This year’s Fall Classic will start on October 24 no matter when the American and National League championship series end. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45956287/world-series-begin-oct-24-mlb-drops-plan-start-early
In the NFL – Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has come out against the new style of helmet he’ll have to wear this year. His preference, the Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD is now banned for not meeting new safety standards. He says the new VTD II version of the Schutt line “looks like a damn spaceship.” https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45957271/aaron-rodgers-dislikes-new-helmet-says-looks-damn-spaceship

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow and S&P 500 each gained a full percent. The Nasdaq was up 1.2%. Gold fell $6.20 on the Comex to $3,398.90 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 72 cents to $63.25 a barrel.
Inflation data released today gave Wall Street hope that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its next meeting in September. The Consumer Price Index rose to an annualized 2.7% in July. Experts were expecting a tenth more. So-called core CPI, which strips away food and energy prices increased to 3.1% – a tenth more than the experts were predicting. The stock market is now pricing in a 91% likelihood of an interest rate cut next month. Before today’s data, it was 85% likely. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/11/stock-market-today-live-updates-.html
President Trump extended the trade truce with China that was set to expire today. The implementation of threatened tariffs has now been pushed back to November, easing tension between the world’s two largest economies as negotiations continue. Without the extension, the already high 30% tariff on goods from China would have gone up and China would likely have responded with retaliatory tariffs against products from the the U.S. That breathing room helped today’s stock market. https://apnews.com/article/trump-trade-tariffs-china-deadline-ad2c003e9a709a1dfdfc9a9fd3798baf
Five months after emerging from bankruptcy, Spirit Airlines says it may not survive without raising more cash. The budget air carrier has been trying to market more upscale – in other words, more profitable products, and look for ways to lower costs, including furloughing 270 pilots last month. But weak demand for leisure travel combined with too much capacity in the industry is working against Spirit. The carrier is now looking to sell some aircraft, real estate or airport gates. It it’s latest financial filing, Spirit management says “there is substantial doubt as to the Company’s ability to continue as a going concern within 12 months …” https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/12/spirit-airlines-warns-it-might-not-be-able-to-survive-without-more-cash.html
Another company that has doubts about its future viability is one those who people under 30 may not be familiar with. But for older generations, it was ubiquitous as the major way to preserve visual images for over 100 years and the originator of the phrase, “Kodak moment”. Shares of Eastman Kodak Company plunged to just over $5 this morning following yesterday’s announcement by the 133-year old maker of film and cameras that its future is looking dim. Kodak was responsible for one of the first consumer cameras in the 1880s and dominated the manufacture of film for hobbyists and professionals throughout the 20th century. It’s yellow and red film boxes were everywhere. But the company struggled to adapt when digital technology began to take over in the 1990s. The Rochester-based company filed bankruptcy in 2012 and wound up selling off many of its businesses and patents, along with ending the production of cameras. Kodak pivoted to focusing on commercial and packaging printing. It’s now nearing completion on a manufacturing plant to create regulated pharmaceuticals. The reorganized company resorted to cancelling its pension plan last year to reduce debt. But it’s currently still tied to a half-billion dollars in short-term debt with management saying it may have to cease operations. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kodak-going-concern-warning-debt-film-photography/
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Ford announced yesterday that it will to retool its Louisville Assembly Plant to produce a midsize electric pickup truck priced in the $30k range within the next 18 months. That’s not just cheap for an EV. That’s cheap for any pickup truck. Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Chevy’s Silverado EV both start at around $50k. The cheapest Tesla Cybertruck is $62k, and the cheapest Rivian is over $70k. Even a gas-powered Ford Ranger starts at $35k. Ford has yet to see a profit from the F-150 Lightning and the EV industry as a whole is facing an uphill battle as the current administration issues executive orders removing incentives and mandates related to EVs and pulls away from fighting climate change. But at yesterday’s announcement by Ford, the power source wasn’t the news. The word that ruled the day was “affordable”. American manufacturers have yet to crack the code that Chinese automakers already have for an affordable EV that competes on price alone, regardless of tax incentives, and is still profitable. Ford thinks it can open up a whole new market both domestically and internationally at the $30k price point for what is not just a truck model, but also a platform for a potential family of vehicle models. It’s a $5b gamble by Ford, who recently scrapped a large electric SUV project. https://www.npr.org/2025/08/11/nx-s1-5496651/ford-cheap-electric-truck
