LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A strong earthquake struck three miles south of Julian this morning at 10:08a. It was initially reported at 6.0, but later downgraded to 5.2 magnitude. It was widely felt throughout Southern California with Rez Radio’s Mike Aguilar describing it as a “medium rumble” followed by a larger, more powerful shake. There have been at least a half dozen associated quakes and aftershocks from 2.5 to 4.0 including one centered in downtown Julian at 2.8. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=ci40926023&extent=32.94314,-116.64908&extent=33.11211,-116.4848
Pala will have several drizzly mornings with partly sunny afternoons, then a chance of rain Friday. It’ll be nice again by Easter Sunday. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a, except for April 13 and Easter Sunday April 20. The Lakers finished the season in a three-way tie for third place in the Western Conference with the Clippers and Nuggets. All had 50 and 32 regular seasons. Tie breakers have the Lakers seeded 3rd, followed by Denver and the Clippers. The Play-in games begin tomorrow with Atlanta at Orlando and Memphis at Golden State.
SPORTS
In the NBA – The Lakers and Clippers each won on Saturday. Yesterday, the Clippers finished their season with an overtime win at Golden State. The Lakers’ final regular season game was a loss at Phoenix.
In the NHL – The Kings beat Colorado Saturday. Colorado the beat the Ducks in Anaheim yesterday. The Kings are at Edmonton tonight. Just five teams have yet to either clinch or be eliminated from playoff contention – Montreal, Columbus, Minnesota, St. Louis and Calgary.
In minor league hockey – The San Diego Gulls Bakersfield Friday.
In Major League Baseball – The Padres swept the Rockies in Denver. Not only that … they did it in three consecutive shutouts. Meanwhile, the Dodgers lost two out of three to the visiting Cubs including a brutal 16-0 shutout Saturday. The Giants won two out of three in New York. The Angels lost two out of three in Houston. That puts the Padres firmly in first place at 13 and 3 with a four-game win streak. They’re a game and a half ahead of San Francisco and 2 ½ ahead of the Dodgers. Today, the Padres host the Cubs, the Dodgers host Colorado, the Giants are in Philadelphia and the Angels have the day off.
In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, San Diego lost 3-2 to the Rapids in Colorado. The Galaxy and Houston Dynamo tied at 1, and LAFC beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1.
In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals lost 12-10 at Albany Saturday.
In Rugby – The San Diego Legion lost 39-12 at New England Saturday.
In golf – At the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Rory McIlroy won it for the first time, completing his Grand Slam of tournaments. He and Justin Rose finished the regulation 72 holes tied at 11 under par 277. McIlroy won the first hole of sudden death. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – At the 50th Long Beach Grand Prix Indy Car race yesterday, Kyle Kirkwood started in the pole position and ended up winning as well, breaking Alex Palou’s sweep of the two Indycar races in March.

On this day in music history – April 14,
- In 1963, the Rolling Stones played the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, named for Bo Diddley’s 1960 song “Doing the CrawDaddy”. The Stones performed Bo Diddly’s song in their set. All four of the Beatles were in the audience. This famous club would inspire the name of the American music magazine, Crawdaddy!
- In 1966, The Spencer Davis Group hit #1 in England with “Somebody Help Me”. It failed to make the U.S. Top 40.
- In 1967, David Bowie’s novelty record, “The Laughing Gnome” was released. It was a little like David Seville’s chipmunks and Sheb Wooley’s “Purple People Eater”. It made the British Top ten when re-released in 1973
- On the same day, Polydor Records released The Bee Gees first single, “New York Mining Disaster 1941” touting them as the most significant talent since The Beatles. It made the Top 20.
- In 1969, Paul McCartney and John Lennon recorded “The Ballad of John and Yoko”. George and Ringo did not take part. Paul & John played all the instruments. Many radio stations banned the song for being blasphemous because of the lyrics, “Christ, you know it ain’t easy.”
- In 1971, The Illinois Crime Commission issued a list of what it believed to be drug-oriented records including Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”, The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, and “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum.
- In 1972, David Bowie’s “Starman” was released as a single. It became his first hit since “Space Oddity” three years earlier. It was a late addition to the album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars”.
- In 1973, Led Zeppelin had the number one album in both the U.S. and their native Britain with “Houses of the Holy”. The cover featured a naked 6-year old girl climbing up Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland.
- In 1975, after rumors that just about every leading guitarist in rock music would replace Mick Taylor in The Rolling Stones, a press release announced Ronnie Wood would be the one joining the band for their upcoming U.S. Tour.
- In 1980, Gary Numan released “The Touring Principle”, the first commercially available long-form rock video in England.
- In 1983, former bass player for The Pretenders, Pete Farndon died of a drug overdose. He’d been in the middle of forming a new band with former Clash drummer Topper Headon.
- In 1995, actor, writer and folk singer Burl Ives died of cancer at age 85. He had hits including “The Blue Tail Fly” and won an Oscar for his supporting role in The Big Country.
- In 2009, former Beatle George Harrison was given a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Sir Paul McCartney, Harrison’s widow Olivia and son Dhani all attended the unveiling outside the Capitol Records building.
- In 2015, soul singer Percy Sledge died of liver cancer at the age of 73. He had the 1966 #1 hit “When a Man Loves a Woman”.

- In 1932, country music star Loretta Lynn, the first woman ever named Country Music Artist Entertainer of the Year.
- In 1942, British singer Tony Burrows, who holds the distinction of singing on four records that were all in the British Top ten at the same time, each one under a different group name. Edison Lighthouse’s “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”, White Plains’ “My Baby Loves Lovin’”, The Brotherhood of Man’s “United We Stand”, and “Gimme Dat Ding” by The Pipkins. All four were also hits in the U.S. – just not simultaneously in the Top Ten as in Britain.
- In 1945, Deep Purple guitarist and songwriter Ritchie Blackmore
- In 1948 Larry Ferguson from Hot Chocolate
