Redhawk Parkway in Temecula was closed yesterday during the evening commute for investigation of a car-to-car shooting. The call came in to 9-1-1 just after 5:15p of an assault with a deadly weapon near the intersection of Temecula Parkway and Redhawk/Margarita Road. Witnesses say a man got out of one vehicle and shot a weapon into a second vehicle. Both then drove away. Arriving deputies found that two people had been taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. No names have been released. Authorities are calling it an isolated incident. Redhawk Parkway was closed until 7:30p. https://patch.com/california/temecula/shooting-temecula-investigation-underway-sheriffs-department
Authorities yesterday released the name the man who died over the weekend in a traffic accident on the eastbound 78 freeway in Vista. 26-year-old Hunter Michael Bean of Escondido was standing outside his disabled pickup truck on the highway east of Vista Village Drive when another vehicle struck him at about 11:30p Saturday. Bean died at the scene. The California Highway Patrol is investigating. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/05/06/man-struck-killed-outside-disabled-vehicle-on-vista-freeway-identified/
Two more downtown redevelopment projects in Oceanside promise to add 562 new apartments and boost the local economy. A seven-story replacement for the OceanPlace Entertainment Center will have 332 apartments plus commercial space and a public plaza. It’ll replace the relatively new complex anchored by a 16-screen Regal movie theater at 401 Mission Ave, which hasn’t been as successful as hoped and was never fully built-out. That one is tentatively scheduled for presentation to the city council on June 18. And a project by H.G. Fenton will transform the site currently occupied by a PNC bank into 230 apartments with a rooftop deck. Both projects are currently making their way through the Oceanside planning department. The current city plan calls for a maximum of 5,500 dwellings in the downtown district. As of 2019, there were just over half that many. These two projects would use up 20% of the remaining capacity, which can always be increased by modifying the General Plan. www.sandiegouniontribune.com

The first container ships arriving from China containing goods with 145% tariffs are arriving in the ports of LA and Long Beach. Many are only half full. A lot of importers stocked up before the tariffs went into effect, which allowed additional cuts in current arrivals and delayed shortages on store shelves. Shortages of Chinese-sourced goods on retail shelves are now expected to hit this summer, just as back-to-school and holiday spending normally heats up. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chinese-china-products-tariffs-shortages-us/
The President’s call for a 100% tariff on Hollywood films made in other countries has been met with questions, criticism, and alternatives. The questions include how to apply a tariff, which is something usually associated with physical goods that have a set value and enforced by border agents. The value of a film is in its intellectual property and is unknown until exhibited. There is a significant trend of big productions being shot in other countries. This year’s biggest-grossing film “A Minecraft Movie” was shot in Canada. The next “Mission: Impossible” movie, scheduled for release Memorial Day, was shot in the UK and other foreign locations. Gov. Newsom has offered to work with Trump on a $7.5b tax credit program to incentivize domestic film production rather than penalize foreign production – something Hollywood filmmaking unions have advocated. Newsom’s tax credit proposal would be based on a similar existing program that was first introduced in 2009. Last October, he announced efforts to extend the scheme and double the amount of incentives to $750m annually. But a USC professor who studies the financial implications of state incentives to the film industry testified in Sacramento that such initiatives “fail to stimulate enough economic activity to justify their substantial cost.” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/06/newsom-trump-movie-tariffs

One month ago, President Trump invoked a 1996 law to fine immigrants who refuse deportation orders about $1k a day and seize their property if they refuse to pay. He’d used the Title 8 law during his first administration. But under President Biden, the fines and policies cited had been removed. Trump proposed yesterday to pay immigrants a $1k stipend if they agree to leave voluntarily. The Department of Homeland Security announced it is paying for travel assistance to voluntary deportees, and that those who use the CBP Home app to tell the government they plan to return to their country of origin will be “de-prioritized” for detention and removal by immigrations enforcement. Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem called it the best, safest and most cost-effective way (for illegal immigrants) to leave the United States and avoid arrest.” It’s also touted as a way for migrants to preserve their ability to someday return to the U.S. Critics warn that those who are already fighting in court for their right to stay in the U.S. could be considered to have abandoned that application if they self-deport and fail to show up for scheduled hearings, triggering an automatic deportation order. https://abc7.com/post/trump-administration-says-pay-immigrants-us-illegally-1000-leave-country/16330539/
California could be facing an energy crunch with some lawmakers predicting retail gasoline prices rising to well over $8 a gallon as soon as next year. Citing a restrictive regulatory environment and an expected lower demand for gasoline as EV mandates take over, leading to the inability to operate profitably in that environment, two California refineries are set to close. Phillips 66 said in October its Los Angeles refinery would close the fourth quarter of 2025. Valero recently told the California Energy Commission that it would “idle, restructure or cease refining operations at its Benicia refinery in the Bay Area by the end of April 2026.” As a result, Gov. Newsom reportedly sent a letter to the CEC, directing regulators to guarantee reliable fuel supplies and develop a strategy for that by July 1. An economist at UC Berkeley says the key to moving forward with refined oil products in California is to allow their import and ensure distribution pipelines are available to accommodate those imports since refinery closures are inevitable and each closure has a significant and immediate impact on supply. https://thehill.com/policy/equilibrium-sustainability/5280032-california-fuel-refinery-closures-gas-prices-newsom/
