Goldenvoice, the promoter for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival has apologized for the traffic problems that created a huge headache for festival-goers and residents of Indio and La Quinta last weekend.  Frustrated event attendees flooded social media with posts last Thursday and Friday that they’d been waiting up to 12 hours to get through the gates and into a campsite and that they had no access to facilities and were running out of gas while stuck in traffic.  One La Quinta city council member was livid about the situation as a representative from Goldenvoice addressed Tuesday’s council meeting.   Goldenvoice’s George Cunningham said people arrived for campsites unexpectedly early this year.  He promised they would take an active approach along with Indio police to get vehicles off city streets more quickly today and tomorrow for weekend #2 and for next weekend’s Stagecoach Festival for country music fans. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/16/coachella-2025-goldenvoice-apologizes-for-traffic-disaster-and-maps-out-changes-for-weekend-2/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell 1%.  The S&P 500 gained a half percent.  The Nasdaq was just about flat.  Comex gold futures fell $17 to $3,329.40 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $2 to $64.47 a barrel.

Today’s stock gains are being attributed to positive trade talks between the U.S. and Japan.

Mortgage rates have jumped the most in a year and are dragging down home values in some cities.  For the week ended today, the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage was 6.83%, according to Freddie Mac.  That’s up from 6.62% last week and the biggest one-week jump since August.  Mortgage rates and bond yields tend to react inversely to sales of 10-year U.S. Treasury notes. At the beginning of April, investors dumped bonds after several days of tariff escalation.  That cause bond yields to have their biggest one-day gain in decades, with higher mortgage rates following suit. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/real-estate/2025/04/17/mortgage-rates-surge-tariffs-housing-market/83114174007/

Ford is telling its dealers that prices could go up in June if tariffs remain.  Automotive News broke the story, which was confirmed by Bloomberg.  According to the memo, the MSRP of any vehicle already in stock will not change and the current employee pricing-for-everyone offer will continue as scheduled through June 2.  However, if tariff policy as it stands doesn’t change there will be pricing adjustments with vehicles manufactured beginning in May.  One already active tariff charges 25% of the value of any completed car entering the country from outside of the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. https://www.kbb.com/car-news/report-ford-tells-dealers-prices-will-go-up-from-tariffs/

A federal judge in Virginia has ruled that Google is an online advertising monopoly.  That could allow prosecutors to push for a breakup of the company.  Google says they won half the case and will appeal the other half.  Consumer impact, if any is unknown at this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJzBnEFdiLY

An outage at Zoom prevented tens of thousands of online meetings yesterday.  Disruptions peaked at about noon Pacific Time with service fully-restored about two hours later according to DownDetector.com, who received more than 60k outages reports.  Reaction on social media was mixed with some remote workers cheering their unexpected afternoon off.  Zoom is one of the most popular web conferencing tools.  It became popular during the pandemic and has now risen to point of being the generic description for online meetings. https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/16/tech/zoom-down-outage/index.html
